About Van Zeller
Description brought to you by Manchester Confidential:
Award-winning fine dining, an established star
Winner of more awards than Roger Federer, Tom Van Zeller is hitting aces at his Montpellier Quarter restaurant. Having sharpened his blades under Raymond Blanc and Tom Aikens, Van Zeller is as much a perfectionist as his presentation suggests. Crafted from micro herbs and vibrant cuts, the cooking brings to mind heavenly gardens but his cooking is far from all looks. Opt for the tasting menu (seven courses, matched wines available) for a journey into the imagination while the set menu (five courses, with plenty of extras) is good value. Starters could include a pigeon, oyster, girolles and pistachio or langoustine and ‘Jowl’ with sea vegetables. Mains betray a keen sense of flavour; salmon could be boldly paired with bacon jam, avocado and watercress or grouse with parsnip, black pudding and brambles. Desserts like raspberry, toasted mallow, granola, lychee and olive oil or fennel doughnut with mascarpone, lemon grass and blackcurrant are woozily wonderful. Wines include on-trend Hungarian Tokaji and a South African Red Muskatel. Sensibly, the simple, bistro décor lets the food do the talking.
