About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
I wasn’t able to eat at the Chip due to the Covid-19 lockdown. Therefore for this review I had to imagine the attentive and friendly service, the amazingly presented and mouthwatering food, not to mention the several imaginative vegan options from which my daughter was able to choose. Will definitely visit one day!
Good food, good wine and good value for money.
We had a lovely time. Thank you!
The Chip is our favourite family restaurant and has been for many years. We visited on Sunday and they actually managed to far exceed our (admittedly high) expectations. Our server (apologies we never caught her name but she was tall and blonde) was the epitome of professionalism, she was efficient and friendly and knew all about the food she was serving, a real credit to the Chip and very much worthy of recognition. My son and I had the 'meaty' amuse bouche which was tasty but my wife and daughter were blown away by their smoky cauliflower one, the delicious bread and seaweed butter were also delicious, a great start! The duck terrine was terrific and I actually asked to see the menu again as I wanted to know every delicious ingredient. It was actually a meal in itself but luckily I managed to soldier on to the next course. I plumped for the Hake which was a fantastic piece of fish and perfectly cooked, I tried my sons pork belly and that was perfect too. My daughter very kindly allowed me a very small spoonful of her chocolate desert and that, obviously, was to die for... Hats off to the kitchen and the staff for an amazing family experience, thank you so much, we can't wait to go back!
I eat at the Chip regularly and I am never disappointed . The service is excellent the food marvellous . I love the courtyard . All in all a great experience
A lovely celebration meal for our family.
Excellent meal and service as usual
Fantastic food & atmosphere!
Got a nice table in the courtyard and the amous bouche and starters were delicious. We both chose. the monkfish for mains but to be frank it got lost in a myriad of other tastes. It seemed like the chef had tried to be too clever. A little less on the various flavours and some more fish would have been really much more appreciated.
Lovely ambience with great food packed with superb flavours with both intensity and subtlety., served by attentive polite staff with outstanding memories! How do they take the order and serve with no notes?!? Great stuff. Wonderful night!
We had a lovely meal and were well looked after by the staff.

Excellent service and amazing food
Fabulous food, fabulous venue
Thoroughly enjoyed our lunch - all of the staff were excellent, as was the food.
Wonderful food, brilliant night out. Would definitely visit again.
We both enjoyed every minute of our visit to your restaurant. Food staff and surrounding all first class!
Everything was well judged and well executed and the space is fantastic - the only fault was that it was a quiet lunch service. Really looking forward to going back on a busy evening.
Although the service was great and the food very nice (no complains) the timing of dinner was very slow: three hours for a very light dinner. Very nice but slow.
