About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.

A Glasgow institution and always enjoyable. Food and wine taken seriously, but atmosphere relaxed.
Food, drink and atmosphere was generally good but the service was very disappointing. We found ourselves largely forgotten about post main course being served. Waitresses that brought desserts got everyone wrong (table of 5) which wouldn't have been such a problem had they not thrown them down and smirked above our heads between one another as if they thought it hilarious. All rather odd. We then sat for approx. 40 minutes with nobody approaching to offer coffee (part of menu) or further drinks. Not sure what was going on but the service really wasn't great and pretty disappointing.
The Chip is a very fine place to come for lunch or dinner, very relaxing. The staff are first class and the food never fails to impress.
Service was excellent, we'd pre booked a large table and their attention, even prior to our booking, was exceptional. Food, a la carte menu, was beautiful and overall a very enjoyable night out. Would highly recommend.
Fabulous meal as always and its amazing to get the same standard of service at Christmas as throughout the year - very rare! Thank you to all.
Food ,service and atmosphere always excellent. Had a fantastic festive lunch with friends - the Chip is always a favourite and never disappoints x
Amazing food, great wine.
Fantastic food, service was excellent, beautiful setting. Slightly pricey if buying from a la carte menu but if you want fine dining it's a must
The waiting staff were superb, knowledgeable and personable- minimally intrusive but available at just the right times. The staff are the restaurants biggest asset - the food was excellent and standards are clearly very high in the kitchen.
The food was delicious and the service perfect. A wonderful experience .
Great food and friendly service. Wine seems a bit overpriced though.
The food was fabulous - I am stuck in the USA but got sent a pic of the salmon and beets. My husband and his mum and aunt were delighted. Thank you for thinking about the difficulty of the stairs for the old 'uns and seating them with consideration. And finally thank you for noting it was my husband's birthday with a card - he was made up. I hope the next time he goes I get to go to - it was the first restaurant he took me to when I met the in-laws for the first time almost just over 29 years ago! Paula
Over the years, we have come to celebrate special occasions. We have always had super food and great service. We came on Monday to celebrate our daughter's 18th birthday and yet again, every detail was fantastic. The next generation of our family are now big fans.
Excellent service for someone who has serious food alergy. Had a separate menu and did not have to insist on how serious the condition is. Food was fantastic and great atmosphere, will come again
A wonderful birthday lunch. Perfect.
It was my husband and I’s first time at your lovely restaurant but it won’t be the last when I come home to Glasgow again, the friendliness, atmosphere and good service and food made it a memorable experience. Many thanks to you all have a good Christmas and best wishes for 2019.
We had a lovely pre - Christmas lunch.
Another memorable meal, where conversation gave way several times to quiet appreciation and delighted "mmmmmmms" in response to our food and wine. Staff were attentive and responsive without being overly so (a pet hate!). Any questions were answered clearly and accurately and the advice given regarding wine (and later whisky!) was informed and unpretentious. Although advised about time limit on the table, we enjoyed a fabulous a la carte lunch and at no time were we hurried or pushed along. Excellent!
Lovely meal, staff were absolutely excellent as always, kindly made adjustments for my wife who is pregnant
Everything was amazing especially that foxy Irish Manager ,I think her name is Eimear ? Already recommmed the place to friends and family J
My partner and I had a lovely time at your restaurant on Sunday the 2nd December. The service was attentative and warm and the meal was superb. A great night. Thank you
We was expecting a better experience but my husbands steak was over done when he asked for medium. The scallop starter was chewy
Excellent meal, lovely subtle Christmassy décor. Attempt to buy vouchers as Christmas present for fellow diners before they arrived didn't quite work and paying for them at the end of the meal also meant a bit of awkwardness. Overall though this didn't put me off returning as I enjoy eating there.
