About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
Had a lovely lunch - food and service excellent
Although the flavoured in my lamb were excellent (truffle and artichoke), the lamb was over cooked. Except that the food and the. Service was wonderful
Food excellent as usual. Had two children with us and the table size and highchair were excellent. Only thing I would have liked was when the adults were served the amuse voucher it would have been nice if the children could have been given something
We regularly celebrate birthdays at the UC and have done so for over 10 years. However, we found it very noisy and we were unable to have a conversation. I don't know why this should have been the case as it wasn't particularly busy. However, it did spoil the occasion and made us think that we might have to find another restaurant which would be a pity as it is such a lovely setting. I should add that the service was very good and the staff very attentive.
Great food, lovely atmosphere, staff friendly
Excellent staff ,food , atmosphere
We, as a family, have been using the CHIP for a good few years.. Everything is cooked to perfection. The staff are excellent, especially with children - who they make very welcome and treat like adults. The only criticism I have is that the service was a bit slow, we used it during mid day and it was far from busy.
Fantastic as always
Really nice and cosy atmosphere, gpod service and really delicious food
The food was amazing as always and the service was excellent.
We have been several times before and were disappointed with the food this time.
The lamb loin last night was the best meal I have ever had in the Chip. The crab was delicious and the corn bhajis a triumph!!! We only came in for a pre theatre btw!!!
Wonderful food and service, super helpful staff, all my guests really enjoyed our visit. Thank you so much, still my favourite restaurant in Glasgow.
A lovely evening meal made with tasty ingredients from the starter through to dessert - the steak was gorgeous and cooked to perfection.Lovely table in a great setting. This is our third visit as celebrated my 60th Birthday there last year Excellent service by Julia. The wine waiter was so friendly and knowledgeable with a subtle sense of humour,Loved the Negroni Champagne cocktail!. Will definitely visit again.
Dining here was a lovely experience. The fact that I am vegan and also can't have gluten was absolutely no problem. Lots of choice (even desserts!) and the waiting staff were great.
We had great advice given on wine choices by a waiter however I wasn’t blown away with the food, good not great. No atmosphere.
Fantastic food and great service. The Chip still manages to deliver the goods after all these years. Just great.
Service was slow . Dinner booked at 5.15 but didn’t commence eating until5.45 . Food fantastic as usual
Normally service is great but a little disappointing on this occasion. Not as attentive as normal and just not quite on the ball. Hopefully better next time. Good however was st least as good if not better than normal. All in all we had a pretty good evening,
Fantastic, place, incredible food, great atmosphere, brilliant service. A little pricey but you get what you pay for.
Great atmosphere, service and well cooked and presented food. Meet and greet could be improved as we waited a while to be greeted
Still the best!
Flawless! Best restaurant in Glasgow!
Incredibly accomodating of our large party of international delegates, especially as the numbers kept changing until the last minute. Outstanding food and service. Thank you for such a special evening.
