About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
Great place, very nice staff, wonderful food and wine. And to top it off the Chip actually provides a decent kids menu, which is extremely rare.
Thank you for making a very special occasion (70th birthday) very special. Friendly service, awesome food, the lot.
Fabulous food but expensive and absolutely worth it👍
Can’t wait to come back to Glasgow just to dine here again, superb food and service
Lovely experience, thank you.
A veritable pleasurable experience. Highly recommended
Fine dining with excellent service in a relaxed atmosphere - we all loved it.
Superb food in a relaxed setting. Staff were knowledgeable and efficient. The sommelier was particularly well informed and recommended the perfect wine to accompany our food.
Very nice place, food and service!
Personally, the additional charge for sauce to accompany steak is a real no-no. Portions were rather small but rich and full of flavour. Lovely space to dine in. Staff were lovely. Deserts were not on a par with the starters or main courses in our mutual opinion.
Really high quality food and service - would certainly recommend!
Fantastic from start to finish. Food incredible - looks amazing and tastes better! Service excellent and such a great atmosphere and setting. Can’t wait to visit again!
Would have liked better choice of vegetable sides
Great vegan options!
We wanted to take Canadian friends somewhere memorable for lunch in Glasgow, since they were only visiting for one day. Where else other than ‘the Chip’? Beautiful food (taste and presentation), a wonderful ambiance and friendly, appropriately attentive, service. All our expectations met once again.
Great place, really nice food and excellent drinks selection!
The Chip is simply fabulous, great food, great wine, attentive lovely staff and the courtyard is so special!
Service exquisite. Very well looked after. Surroundings and atmosphere second to none. Food quality brilliant however portion size small, left more hungry than we came in. EXPENSIVE. 3 course meal with no alcoholic drinks came to a 3 figure bill. Nice for a special occasion however.
Everything from food to ambience to perfect. The only downside was that the service was very slow. It took forever for drinks to arrive every time we place an order.
We had a lovely evening. The food was lovely and the staff were very attentive. The wine waiter was very knowledgeable and gave us some advice for our summer trip to France. I thought it was a little on the expensive side as we're the wines but this wouldn't stop me returning.
The service was fantastic. Food was amazing. And the surroundings beautiful. No faults whatsoever. Went to bar afterward for a drink and again great experience.
