About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
Another great meal, served by delightful, friendly, knowledgeable staff. As a Glasgow institution, which we have visited for years, it never disappoints. My son was remembering a family meal to celebrate his grandmother's 80th, when he was 11( he is now 26) where he and his English cousins captured to occasion on the new and instantly accessible, and to them intriguing digital camera......on which they tried to capture, not just those who were there, but the paper aeroplanes they had made once they had finished eating delicious food. They failed.
The food was as expected....exceptional. The service was exceptional too...pleasant and attentive without being overbearing. The atmosphere and surroundings were exceptional too. So....all in all its was an exceptionally good evening. Thanks to all staff involved.
Excellent food. Drinks a bit on the pricey side . Coffee prices outrageous ! Moderate your drink prices and you would get me back more often as the food is first class.
The atmosphere and starters / main courses were fantastic. Service was generally great although a little slow on occasion - we had to ask twice for a few things (including the bill). We also weren't overly impressed with the ice cream dessert - the ice cream didn't have a lot of flavour and for some reason, the apples were very salty.
Our first visit to Glasgow and we greatly enjoyed our evening at The Chip. Tasty food, beautifully presented but we were most impressed by the service from the staff. Friendly, attentive and informed. Although expensive our dining experience was worth every penny.
Hadn't been here in a long time. Superb doesn't really cover it. You pay for what you get, so don't go complaining it is overpriced and overrated. The food, service and attention to detail were first class. Try it if you feel like a great treat. Our server Beau made us feel right at home, nothing was too much bother. Would definitely visit again.
Fantastic food, service and atmosphere. Thank you for accommodating us after we turned up over an hour before our reservation!
Our experience was a highlight from our visit to Glasgoiw. Everything felt special & well thought-out. Thank you!
Great night with friends on their first visit to chip - they certainly weren’t disappointed. Food was wonderful. Would recommend the scallops for starter and we each had a different main that we all thoroughly enjoyed. The food was complimented by the great atmosphere and service - first class night just need to do it more often.
Fantastic food and a lovely, unique restaurant.
Lovely staff who were so helpful with our 6 month old baby. Thank you!
Great restaurant - very nice meal. The wait we had made us feel very welcome.
Excellent hospitality and special attention from every moment on the part of the whole team with a major concern to satisfy the specificities of each of us. And this was not tainted in advance! The meal was up to expectations! Thanks!
Beautiful meal with lovely, humorous service.
Love your restaurant and would always rate as one of the best dining experiences in the whole of Britain. My forth visit this week and as memorable as ever. Thank you!
Unique and absolutely fabulous! The location, the building, the decor, the ambience, friendly atmosphere, the food, the drinks - the combination of everything makes it into a unique and memorable experience. Don't just think about it - go there and enjoy.
Top quality food and service! My partner and I had a fantastic meal on Saturday night - Ubiquitous Chip is our favourite restaurant in Glasgow. The service was excellent - polite, efficient but not 'in your face'. The was a lovely amount of time between courses too. The ambience was lively but it still felt intimate. And the quality of the fish dishes and wine - wow!! Thanks again for a great meal!
Great service, sommelier excellent. Needed more veg (greens) with the main meal but overall tasty food. Special place.
Excellent as always
Food, drink, service, atmosphere all perfect. Wine list and quality very good, albeit the markup is pretty significant.
The restaurant was full to capacity with large groups celebrating birthdays etc. Despite this , and the extra demands it must have put on all staff, the food and service were both excellent . Can’t wait to return.
Staff were fantastic. Special place to eat
Had a lovely meal, delicious food, very relaxing atmosphere and attentive service, will definitely come back again!
We have been Chip fans since 1971 when Ronnie opened on t'other side of Byres Road...and have always admired the use of Scottish foods...and how the restaurant has grown...we ate there last night and, as I always do, I said to my wife..."if this scenario was in Barcelona/Palma/Marseilles...we'd be saying "This is amazing"...it is and it is just off Byres Road. keep going Colin...Dad started a Glasgow revolution.!!
We had a brilliant time celebrating my birthday. The food was great and the staff were superb.
