About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
Top drawer dining experience again. Can't wait to come back.
Outstanding food & service!
Excellent service and food as usual.
We had a great evening - which was to celebrate a wedding anniversary. The food was as good as ever , and as I have certain dietary requirements the attention to detail is always excellent . With my own menu I don’t have to worry about mistakes in ingredients . Thanks .
When I have visitors or business colleges arriving in Glasgow for the first time, The Chip is my go to restaurant. It never fails to impress. From the courtyard setting. The quirky stairs and passages to other bars and dining areas. The food and service is exemplary. (Plus The Chip is where I proposed to my wife 28 years ago!)
Excellent, as always.
Great location for our business dinner. Food is outstanding.
Food was incredible, couldn't fault it at all. Staff were all lovely and very professional. Only slight thing I would mention was there were a couple of times that we were after some drinks but staff seemed busy and was difficult to grab their attention. Very good experience all round.
Nos ha encantado visitar Ubiquitous, el ambiente es relajado, cercano, envolvente e inspirador. Tanto la comida como la atención del personal son excelentes. Muy recomendable
Food was lovely & the staff were all very friendly & professional.
We were a large group and the staff were excellent. Service was good and food excellent. Staff helpful and courteous. We have been a number of times before and never been disappointed.
Great food and service in light airy relaxed surroundings. Really enjoyable afternoon out.
Another lovely meal, this is one of my favourite places to eat in Glasgow.
Wonderful, exciting food with great flavours. Fantastic atmosphere. Place never disappoints.
Great dining experience. Lovely food and there is a feel good factor about this place.
We had an extremely good meal here, and the service was attentive but not stiffly formal. We had an early evening booking, but I was suffering from a very painful arthritis flare up, and so we very cheekily asked to be seated even before the restaurant was open for evening service. Our request was dealt with respectfully, and after checking how busy the Wee Pub was, we were allowed to sit - despite it being an inconvenience in a restaurant preparing for service.
Great restaurant, food was excellent.
Had dinner here on Saturday evening. It was delicious and service was amazing.
We have been to the main restaurant many times over the past 10 years and have enjoyed every visit. However, last night the meal was better than expectations - which are high any way! The presentation of the food was sharper, better, simply much prettier on the plate. We had the scallops, the crab and then 2 fillet for mains. The sides were excellent as always - the gratin was very good and as always we had the stovies, lovely. Couldn’t fault the meal at all. The service was excellent - we were served by a young girl who had only just started working with you, she was really attentive, polite and nice. We would love if you started offering the surf and turf lobster again, we used to greatly enjoy throwing it around the place trying to get the meat out! Bring it back!! Thanks again. Ash
I took some friends who had never been to Glasgow and they loved the restaurant and the food. They were stunned by the quality of food and thought the portions sizes were just right. I love The Chip and will be visiting when I can now I have relocated back to Glasgow after many years away. The front of house, waiting staff and sommelier on shift that (Saturday) night were superb and we had great banter with them. Unpretentious, friendly and professional. Thank you very much for a lovely night.
Steak at 35 pounds came with dauphinois potato only and no vegetable option. Very thick and came out quite fast. Perhaps was prepared somewhat in advance but was good nonetheless.
Excellent food in atmospheric surroundings. Went to extra effort to make at wife's birthday meal even more special. Would highly recommend!
Service pleasant but slow. Loved the flyer wine option
Always a lovely experience with unique surroundings :)
We were celebrating a special occasion and the Chip lived up to every expectation and beyond. Service was really good, especially the sommelier who recommended us wine, and the manager on the door who ended up serving us most of the night. We sat in the lovely courtyard and the food was perfect. Despite the high prices (we ended up spending almost £200 for two people) it was memorable enough to be worth every penny.
