About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
Food value is good but wines are extremely expensive. Nevertheless, the wine was delicious and the entire experience very good.
Ate at the U.C. last year and loved the food, service, ambience. Just as good this year, everything was perfect.
A great meal. I think the chip has rally improved a lot over the lats 5 years. well done.
An expensive experience. Had the main course lamb loin - would expect more than two small pices of lamb for £28. Atmosphere and staff first class.
Food was amazing, however my scallops starter could’ve used a touch more seasonings, but overall fantastic restaurant with fantastic staff!
Dining experience was a wedding gift from special friends. Perfect place to celebrate and definitely will book again.
Regrettably we did not enjoy this visit. The food, both starters and main courses were not freshly cooked, they were dry and had evidently been cooked and left under the grill or a lamp to keep them warm. We complained to the manager though this was after we had payed. At the hour we ate the staff were scarce and we did not want to wait any longer.
I think your normal ( popular) wines are too much expensive!
Out for a day, seen davinci and salvador at Kelvingrove, had a single drink after to then enter your restaurant and for the first member of staff to ask us whether we had a drink and then state "well you's are a mess" with a chuckle. Food was good, same staff member attempted to put other tables bill on ours, service was soo poor we left early and went by too see the stranglers, leaving half the food and most tbe wine, the staff lower the value
Great ambiance, great service, great food. I love the elegant (not stuffy) feel of the Ubiquitous Chip! Great for a nice meal out or a grand celebration!
First visit for my wife and I. We decided to have 4 starters as those looked more imaginative than the main courses and they were excellent in presentation and taste. Desserts were also lovely. Service was good. Our only issue was finding the entrance! Coming in off Byers Road it is not obvious you have to walk all the way along the lane and we got lost in the wee pub next door. That said, we hope to return.
Service was unusually disappointing. Been many times before and first time had plates dragged along the table when clearing and been asked to hand plates over instead of being removed. Was it because It was just myself and three children?
Your food is of good quality however our roast potatoes where disgusting, like leather and tough. I love a good roast tottie but the ones served had been sitting about for ages or reheated or something, I don’t know but they certainly where not fresh on either of our plates. Everything else was spot on.
Such a lovely place! Gorgeous atmosphere, incredible food and wonderful staff.
Had a wonderful evening in lovely surroundings, the food was 1st class & all staff were friendly & professional. Will definitely be back to share the experience with family & friends.
Excellent quality and service but expensive
