About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
Been to the chip many times and never been disappointed. It was our friends first visit to the chip and they loved it, everyone saying as they left how great it was and that they will definitely return! Good choice of food on the menu, good choice of prices and also that you could mix and match dishes from both the fixed price menu and the al la carte, the tarragon ice cream with rhubarb was simply amazing. The service was attentive without being intrusive. Your staff are very friendly and nothing is too much trouble for them. Just a great experience from start to finish.
Fantastic food and service was fantastic
Delicious fresh food pleasant staff great atmosphere
Great food and service. One of our guests had a garlic intolerance and a menu was drawn up for him and printed off very quickly - great bit of "over and above" customer service which was greatly appreciated. Knowledgeable staff with regards to the menu and wine.
Shame my haggis was a bit cold however I was offered a fresh plate although declined as didn’t want my husbands steak to go cold. It still tasted great and I appreciated the haggis being taken off the bill. Your wine list is AMAZING and service was outstanding!
The ubiquitous chip actually has a dairy free menu and I’ve never seen that before, such good service and such good food. I’ve loved every second! Thank you so much.
Food , service and wine were perfect. Think the court yard could do with being refurbished.
The Food was lovely as always but this time the service was very poor. We had to ask to order our first drink. Then after 20 + minutes we had to ask to order our food. We had to ask to see the dessert menu. After that we were not offered Teas or Coffees at all. The waitress in particular ignored us most of the time. The waiter did help eventually.Overall it did make us feel uncomfortable despite enjoying a great lunch. Very surprised as always had friendly and excellent staff in the past.
Great menu and wine list.
Great food and great staff
Lovely lunch, attentive, friendly staff.
Asked twice for a second drink which never came.
Our lunch at the “Chip” was perfect in every way. The food was delicious, our servers were attentive and friendly and the surroundings are just fabulous. Definitely one of our favourite places in Glasgow!
Excellent wine recommendation. Very buttery pork belly, and a splendid Sunday roast.
Best place in Glasgow!
Great place to eat - one of my favourites anywhere
This was our first visit and it did not disappoint. We will definitely be back!
Faultless! Wonderful food and wine and terrific service. I loved the fact you could offer me a dairy free MENU - not just the choice of a couple of dishes. We will be back - soon.
The Chip is simply delightful - a beautiful atmosphere, truly delicious modern Scottish fare, and perfect service. We celebrated my dad's birthday and they made it so special. Thank you!
Feedback from one guest (part of a group): I thought the dinner was excellent. The food was great and everyone had a similar view and the service was generally at the right speed. The servers were very friendly and professional. A very good experience
First time back in 5 years, better than I remembered it. Beautiful space. Great food. Food service was excellent, including a separate printed menu for my pescevegan guest. And servers were spot on about who got what. Only flaw was beverage service; ran out of both water and wine, sommelier never showed up.
Excellent atmosphere and service and very good food. Interesting to have a wedding dinner in the main part of th restaurant and other diners around it. Was a lovely evening
Outstanding service and quality of food. All our guests want to make it a weekly treat! We just love The Chip
