About Ubiquitous Chip: Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
Staff were delightful. Food was fabulous. Lovely to be out. Unfortunately it was very cold so experience would have been better with more efficient outside heaters
Very well organised and excellent service. Was great to be back on one of my favourite places catching up with friends.
Lovely food and service! Good prices! Tasting menu was delicious and inventive!
Whilst it was very cold outside we still had an excellent time. The Oysters were lovely but at £29.00 the wine was very expensive, particularly as I ordered the house white, which zi thought was less expensive. A full list of drinks and prices would help.
Another, great meal at 'The Chip' great staff. attentive service and amazing food. Staff coped amazingly well despite all the new restrictions.
Staff and drinks were lovely
Always a pleasure to go back. Staff was really friendly!! We just hope that you bring Sagres back.
Stock on drinks was low.
My partner and I had a wonderful evening. We had the tasting menu and it was absolutely outstanding. The service was first class and the staff extremely knowledgeable about the food. Lovely, friendly and first class evening. Thank you.
Service was slow. Fish was over cooked.
Absolutely delicious tasting menu. Staff were excellent and restaurant has lovely vibe. Hopefully next time rules will allow proper wine inside but it didn’t spoil a fantastic meal.
So good to be back. Delicious food and great service.
I accidently booked a table for food, meant to book rooftop terrace! No space left on rooftop(sad for us) but staff were accomodating and we got a table out on Ashton Lane. Considering everything going on,we enjoyed our first draught beer in a year 😊
Lovely staff and great food. Thank you for finding us a table outside and for being so kind and accommodating. Such a wonderful day thanks to your amazing hospitality. Thank you so much
Overall all the food was luke warm, from the starters including scallops to the mains including the steaks. Portions for the scallops were excessively small even for an a la carte menu. Venison was nice but again overall experience was very disappointing in terms of expecting something a bit special especially at the prices they charge. Service was Ok but not exceptional. I won’t be rushing back!
The staff were very friendly and attentive. The food we had - brasserie menu - was amazing! Best ribs we’ve ever had!! A lovely experience, would highly recommend and come back ourselves.
I wish i could give more than five stars! Its plain to see the work that has gone into opening safely in these times. The high standards of service and food certainly dont show it though - every aspect of our visit was a joy, from the moment we entered. Despite wearing masks and having most likely only just returned to work having been furloughed for a very long time, staff were warm, friendly and gracious. And i will be dreaming about the food for weeks, it was not only delicious but beautifully presented. Everything was flavourful, fresh and cooked to perfection. I look forward to returning - and my thanks to everyone who made our visit so memorable
My partner and I finally got a chance to go to the Chip for the first time yesterday and sample the tasting menu, what precipitated from the moment we sat down was the most amazing culinary experience I have ever had (sorry mum!), also the staff are bloody brilliant! The selection of dishes bestowed before us were mindblowing, beautifully presented, utterly unique, cooked and timed to perfection. I lack the vocabulary to accurately describe this experience and do it any justice so please just go and let the amazing chefs and very attentive staff guide you to satisfaction, they deserve the business now of all times (April/21) and you deserve a treat!
Happy to be back at my longtime second home after so long.
Nice to see an affordable lunch menu. Food pretty good but perhaps not up to table d'hote standards. Service attentive, though waiting staff not too knowledge and had to refer to management a few times. Overall enjoyable.
Food magnificent, staff excellent and the environment was extremely Covid safe. However, the ambient, choice of music was invasive, intrusive and too loud. People go to the Chip to not only enjoy the food but to enjoy the company of their friends, not listen to somebody's choice of music.
Our visit meal out after lockdown didn’t disappoint. The staff were really friendly and made us feel at ease with the restrictions and measure in place and the food was outstanding (felt like the chefs were having fun after not being absent from the kitchen for so long). The tasting me was excellent and we’d fully recommend it. The only thing missing was a nice glass of wine to accompany it.
