About Ubiquitous Chip Restaurant
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
Excellent venue, terrific food, great service.
This is my absolute favourite restaurant. I love the atmosphere and environment with the cobbled floor and lush planting. I love the Scottish menu with the a la Carte being a “treat” on special occasions and the excellent value for money fixed price menus as less extravagant options. The staff are always a delight. I hope to be able to return many more times in future!
My family have been fortunate to dine at “the chip” several times, and again the experience was first class. I have reviewed the restaurant in the past and sang it’s praises Long may it continue!
From the moment we walked in we felt it was going to be a great night. Staff were friendly and attentive, atmosphere in the conservatory, charming. The sommelier,a los angeles piper,, gave great guidance with our wine choice, and our food was delicious. In all, a wonderful experience for a special evening. Thank you Ubiquitous Chip.
Excellent welcoming staff good knowledge of food & wine .
Great meal and service. No wonder they have been successful for so long.
Overall excellent evening and service from staff was lovely. Thank you
Beautiful food with accomplished service. Delightful.
We have eaten here a few times before but this was the first time we ordered a la carte . Everything was excellent, goats cheese cake with poached pear was a favourite.
Great first visit! Exceeded our expectations.
Disappointing, the whole reason for wanting to try this restaurant was for the setting, I booked on line and did not have the option to choose the courtyard, when we arrived we were shown to a table by the kitchen!! I asked to be moved and told they were full, although two people had just walked in without booking and got shown to a courtyard seat! Food was nice but I don't think the price was justified, I had steak and it was a bit tough!
Great food, service, ambience, and always features in our eating out thoughts...
Exceptional food and service.
Beautiful place, fabulous meal, brilliant drinks & magnificent staff 👌
Really nice food in a wonderful place and great service. Thanks
Our favourite local restaurant.
Always a pleasure to visit and dine.
The set menu is great value. However the main menu is pricey.
We had an excellent evening. Service was superb as always and the food was delicious. It was a special occasion for my family and you didn’t let us down. Thanks 👍🏻
Great food and buzz but experience spoiled by a careless waiter who, when I asked for the bill, told me that our guests (who we'd taken as a birthday gift) had already settled the bill. When our friends returned to the table there followed a most embarrassing exchange where my wife and I had to ask our guests why they had paid, which of course, they denied.
We had a lovely afternoon celebrating my birthday at the Saturday jazz lunch
Another fantastic jazz lunch. I took my friend as she had never been and we had a great time. Food delicious and great value for money and never rushed. Thank you!!
First time visitor, I was very impressed by the service, ambiance and most importantly the food. Very easy to find and a real highlight of our trip to Glasgow.
My favourite place to go get a meal!
