About Ubiquitous Chip Brasserie
The Chip was opened by Ronnie Clydesdale on the 11th January 1971, at a time when Scottish cuisine was confined solely to the home. Chefs of the day knew only Italian or French cooking, and if you wanted to eat out in Glasgow your choice was limited.
In the early years, to suggest that Scotland had a legitimate unique cuisine was an anathema. We had a vision to bring back Scottish cuisine, and to become the best place to eat in Glasgow.
From day one The Chip drew its inspiration from regional Scottish dishes. Aunties, grannies and even folklore were a constant source of influence. Some thought us daft, and saw eating out for Glasgow and Scottish cuisine preposterous. Yet, some 40 years on Ronnie’s faith in our national cuisine has been embraced across the country, and Scottish produce is deservedly acclaimed as some of the best in the world.
We are now one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow. But we will never settle, and will constantly strive to improve our food, fresh ingredients and atmosphere.
Continually inspired by Scotland’s larder, The Chip has grown to become something of a Glasgow icon. Our courtyard dining room is one of the most endearing magical spaces to eat out in the area. A fine dining menu is on offer in the restaurant and a lighter brasserie menu in the various bars, mezzanine and roof terrace.
As one of the best restaurants in Glasgow we have picked up a thing or two over the years. Throughout the year our menus are dictated by the seasons. Over the decades we have built up a network of specialist suppliers who share our love of food. For locals this ethos has made The Chip a veritable institution and, for many, their chosen place for eating out.
The Ubiquitous Chip is no stranger to awards, but we never take them for granted. We’ve been awarded the Good Food Guide Readers’ Restaurant of the Year for Scotland 2013 and most recently we were awarded Condé Nast Traveller Gold Standard 2014. 2011 saw Ingr3dients nominated for 5 various Cultural and Experiential categories at the Scottish and UK Events Awards, and the Arts & Business Scotland Awards. The late Ronnie himself was recognised by his peers with the CIS lifetime achievement award.
For a memorable dining experience, come down and see why we call The Chip one of the best places to eat out in Glasgow.
wonderful evening, and thanks again to Emanuele who made our experience warm and nice! and i finally tried the haggis!
A fantastic experience (as always)
We liked it so much we came back twice in one week Our server was knowledgeable about food and wine and was extremely attentive. The food was outstanding!
Pleasantly surprised at how good the food was.
I am grateful that the restaurant accepted that two of our party dropped out at the last minute. They swiftly adjusted the table to accommodate our smaller size and were gracious about the situation.
We thought the meal was one of the best we've eaten all year........ fabulous and see you again soon
Great atmosphere, service and food!
lovely relaxed evening
Excellent staff knowledgeable friendly capable great
One of the best meals that we have had in any restaurant in the last few years. We definitely intend to come back.
Had a really lovely meal out -- food was delicious and inventive, and service was great. Thank you!
We had a lovely evening, taking my daughters (8 & 6) for their first time. Couldn't have had a more lovely time. Thanks, can't wait to come back.
The staff were so friendly and were so helpful! Especially with my gluten free requirements. Great atmosphere. Delicious food!
we couldn't get reservations in the main restaurant but the Brasserie is hardly a "second choice" restaurant. Creative menu in its own right, paired with a great wine list. Menu is deceptively small but everything we tried was wonderful.
Wonderful, interesting meal. Lovely atmosphere. Great service.
Delicious dinner and staff were very helpful
Quality of food was amazing
So impressed with my first visit earlier in the year, I had to come back. Really good food and wine, relaxed but efficient and cheerful service. Cheese with selected whisky was new to me; excellent addition to my dining experience. I will be back on my next visit to Glasgow.
Amazing place! We had a great evening, the food was superb and the service was really friendly. Would definitely go back.
Heavily recommended and lives up to advance hype. Great in every respect. Glad we went. Bob
Best belly pork I've ever had
Really impressive, as always!
We had a fantastic time, food was excellent, service was first class and overall I would recommend the Ubiquitous Chip to all my friends and family. A great place with a fantastic atmosphere.
Table wasn't ready for our dining time, restaurant was too cold (we had to ask for window to be closed), it felt like we were eating in the corridor to the bar toilets ruining atmosphere and we had to ask for our mains (it appears the kitchen we not told when out starters were finished so there was an over an hour delay between courses). The food and drink was nice, but overall very disappointing trip.
An excellent evening in good company with good food and wine. Food and Service was excellent. Trouble is, we stay 400 miles away from The Ubiquitous Chip. Hopefully we will get back next year. Slàinte mhath, Robin & Joyce Campbell.
