About Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room
“A simple, homely restaurant beneath a B&B, run by an experienced local chef who trained under Nathan Outlaw. Ultra-fresh seafood is the focus, with dishes only confirmed once the day boat deliveries come in. Cooking is skilled” - MICHELIN guide inspectors
Recently awarded a Michelin star for the 2017 Michelin Guide, here at Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room in Ilfracombe, quality and comfort are paramount. We believe that fine dining is best enjoyed in a relaxed and unpretentious environment.
We are incredibly lucky to live and work in such a beautiful area. To take full advantage of our location, we source the very best in local, seasonal ingredients, making the most of the abundance North Devon has to offer.
We hope to welcome you soon.
Excellent evening, will return and recommend the excellent food-value for money
Without doubt the best food we have eaten for a long while. The staff were friendly but not intrusive - felt a bit like eating in someone's dining room albeit with great waiters. The main tasting menu was lovely, but one of us had the vegetarian option which was imaginative, creative and enjoyable - not always our experience eating in 'good restaurants'. The only regret is that we don't live closer - if we did we would be frequent visitors.
Best food we ate on our holiday - fresh, creative, tasty. Incredibly friendly, welcoming and attentive staff too. Couldn't have asked for a more perfect meal.
We are not frequent users of Michelin Star restaurants and this was a treat for us on holiday, but the Olive Room lived up to all our expectations in all aspects.
Have been several times to experience Thomas Carr at The Olive Room and the food has always been 'sublime .... .impeccable service with knowledgeable front of house team. A real treat
The food was amazing 😍. I felt the service needed to be better. We do not drink wine and our wine glasses were eventually removed just before desert! My empty glass and tonic bottle stayed on the table for at least an hour after I'd finished with it despite my hints on putting both to one side. We have eaten in lots of very good restaurants and the service has been impeccable. It appeared that the young lady serving us was being trained but I feel her attention to detail was lacking. All these things add up to an amazing dining experience it's not just about the food unfortunately.
The setting is simple, but food is sophisticated and well presented.
My husband and I loved the lunch, the food was really great. We were so happy you kept the restaurant open for just for us, which we were amazed by. Other places would have cancelled us, so a big thank you for doing this - really shows your professionalism.
Absolutely amazing food and service. Would highly recommend.
Food was what I would expect of a Michelin star however the service in comparison to other Michelin star restaurants was not as good. Attention to detail was missing The fish dishes however were incredible.
We booked a table for our sons 28th and it was one of the best dining experiences ever. The taster dishes were superb. Not one of the dishes disappointed, far from it, this is one of the best restaurants I have ever been to and the friendly service was outstanding. Massive thank you from us. Well done chef and well done to the fantastic waiter we had. Loved it.!
fantastic food and service.
we were a party of 10 and were celebrating a 60th wedding anniversary, we could not fault any of the food. the presentation was amazing and the mixture/combination of flavours was flawless. I will certainly be returning
IAmazing food - informative person serving us
We had a lovely evening on my wife's birthday and the taster menu was fantastic. The atmosphere is intimate and as the venue is not large you do not have to compete with everybody else to be heard. Lovely restaurant and would highly recommend.
Excellent. Food was fantastic, can’t beat £40 for 3 course at 1 star level. Definitely visit again next time we come down to Devon.
Lovely food. Very attentive and friendly staff. No doubt has more atmosphere when busy. There were just us and two other people so very quiet. Overall great experience.
Best meal we have had since moving to Devon, will hopefully be back for more, thank you all for a wonderful experience.
Yummy food, what more can I say. One of the best restaurants we have been to, and we have been to a few!
stunning food. Appropriately limited menu perfectly executed. Thank you! Well-deserved star
Individually the food on the tasting menu was amazing, we just didn’t think it all came together as a full menu, each had very strong accompanying sauces which did make us feel a bit queezy, which resulted in my wife not being able to finish the final course. I understand you say it’s a simple and homely restaurant but I think tables and cutlery could be more refined when you are paying such a high price for the experience.
Quality high end food in a relaxed and pleasant small restaurant .We both enjoyed the evening .
Seafood dishes were completely exquisite as was the desert. I would have liked the lamb to be more tender. Overall excellent and a lovely treat. I would definitely recommend.
Probably the best meal I have ever had. Really relaxed setting and I couldn’t believe how quickly three hours had passed.
We had an absolutely fabulous meal, accompanied by very good wine and delivered with service that was just right - friendly and courteous, without ever intruding. It's worth going for the 6-course tasting menu as you get to sample a wider range of Thomas Carr's fine cooking but be warned this does become a big meal when you add in the complimentary bread and two amuse bouches!
