About Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room
“A simple, homely restaurant beneath a B&B, run by an experienced local chef who trained under Nathan Outlaw. Ultra-fresh seafood is the focus, with dishes only confirmed once the day boat deliveries come in. Cooking is skilled” - MICHELIN guide inspectors
Recently awarded a Michelin star for the 2017 Michelin Guide, here at Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room in Ilfracombe, quality and comfort are paramount. We believe that fine dining is best enjoyed in a relaxed and unpretentious environment.
We are incredibly lucky to live and work in such a beautiful area. To take full advantage of our location, we source the very best in local, seasonal ingredients, making the most of the abundance North Devon has to offer.
We hope to welcome you soon.
Great food with lots of different flavours.Time flys by with anticipation for the next course. Thank you for a lovely meal.
Delicious food very well presented. Lovely front of house staff. Very attentive but in no way intrusive. We go knowing that we will enjoy an excellent meal. We always look forward to going back.
Wonderful restaurant, excellent staff and they adjusted the menu for us superbly. Cannot recommend enough
This is our third visit to "The Olive Room", and the second time we have stayed at "The Olive Branch" next door. Food and experience wonderful, looking forward to our next visit. Sue and Colin Trick.
Our meal was superb. We had no idea that dining of this quality was available in Ilfracombe. Each course was a delight.
Outstanding food (again) - some of the best fish cookery I’ve ever tasted. And although we had the 6 course tasting menu, I really appreciated the fact that if you have the 4 course menu, you (rather than the restaurant) choose which 4 courses you have. Keep up the great work!
We had a lovely lunch on a very wet day. Completely faultless. We definitely will return when next in the area.
What a real gem of a restaurant. We have eaten in many Michelin Starred establishments and this is the best by far - unpretentious surroundings, fantastic attentive knowledgeable service and the real star of the show being the quality and preparation of the food - every dish was delicious. Please open your second restaurant in Bath!
A superb unexpected find. The vegetarian tasting menu was full of flavours
We really enjoyed our food without exception. We have eaten in a few Michelin starred restaurants but it is always a real treat that cannot be afforded on a regular basis! The sea bream with the curry sauce was everyone's favourite. We would have appreciated a 'flight of wines' option - maybe something you would consider for the future. Thank you very much for an amazing dining experience. Barbara
Wonderful 3 course lunch on Saturday. Food delicious as usual. A choice of wIne by the glass and all were of high quality.
Wonderful food and experience, will definitely return
Not my first visit, and it won't be my last. Amazing flavours, friendly and attentive staff, what a fabulous restaurant!
A really enjoyable experience so much so we did it again four days later and again it was superb. We will see you again David & Ario Coverdale
We had a fantastic experience on our first time fine dining at your restaurant. The food was amazing we had some lovely wine and the service was outstanding. All round 10 out of 10 experience. We will be back
A very enjoyable 6 course tasting menu with lovely fresh ingredients and good depth of flavour, beautifully arranged on plate. Small restaurant but tables far apart to enjoy own space and conversation. Goid range of wines, beers and soft drinks all at reasonable prices. Waiting staff were friendlyand knowledgeable answering all our questions with a smile. Will definitely return.
We came to you because we wanted a memorable evening with some longstanding friends who were staying with us. Our friends are serious about food and are active in the slow food movement where they live. We hoped you would be able to provide us with a fitting way to celebrate our friendship and thank them for their kindness over the years. We were not disappointed: the food, with its attention to detail, the service, which was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere, which was indeed homely, more than lived up to our expectations. Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Andy and Ruth Downie
Fantastic food and very good friendly service, perfect for our anniversary meal.
We dined at the Olive Room as a treat at the end of our honey-moon and it was perfect. Service was relaxed yet knowledgeable and attentive and the food was outstanding!
We stayed in Ilfracombe for one week, and pre-booked our Friday night dinner in advance. We are so pleased we did it was the best meal of our holiday and made our wedding anniversary break memorable. The food is amazing, the restaurant is small and intimate and great service, thank you.
We were a bit surprised as a couple we had to choose exactly the same choices. We thought they could have had a few more choices on the menu. If someone didn’t like fish they would have had a hard time finding 4 choices. Saying that the food was delicious, good portion sizes and beautifully cooked. Staff were very friendly.
Service was very good, quality of ingredients excellent. Six course tasting menu was delicious, but we found the portions a little large for 6 courses. Of course we want to try everything, but I couldn't eat the lamb course even though it was beautiful, as I was just bursting by this time. One slight negative for me was the batter on deep fried oyster was quite greasy, but other than that extremely minor issue, the food was superb.
We had a lovely meal, but it went on far to long (appx 3.5hrs). Which in a different environment would have maybe been ok, but the chairs and tables are not comfortable enough to be sat for this amount of time, The environment is relaxed in some ways but not in others; I love that it doesn't have the stuffy uncomfortable 'Michelin star restaurant' feel. But, as the room is very small, your conversation cannot be private so this makes things a little uncomfortable, it was very quite, maybe turn the music up just a touch to break the silence and make everyone feel a little more relaxed about having a conversation. But most importantly, the chairs need to be much more comfortable if you are sitting for so long. Thumbs up to the food, but I was far to uncomfortable for the last hour to enjoy its full potential; thank you
The food was lovely but for the money it needed to be more exciting and more flavoursome. The atmosphere was better this time however I still think its limited by the clientele on the night when the venue is that small. The service was slick but one of the waitresses forgot what she brought us, twice. I hope the feedback helps and is not too harsh because at both said at had a great evening and enjoyed the food and I should mention that one of the waitresses was particularly kind and useful.
Had the 6 course menu, enjoyed very much all the courses, least favourite was the duck, fish was definetly the star here and rightly so, service was good but could be a little more polished in keeping with the food.
