About Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room
“A simple, homely restaurant beneath a B&B, run by an experienced local chef who trained under Nathan Outlaw. Ultra-fresh seafood is the focus, with dishes only confirmed once the day boat deliveries come in. Cooking is skilled” - MICHELIN guide inspectors
Recently awarded a Michelin star for the 2017 Michelin Guide, here at Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room in Ilfracombe, quality and comfort are paramount. We believe that fine dining is best enjoyed in a relaxed and unpretentious environment.
We are incredibly lucky to live and work in such a beautiful area. To take full advantage of our location, we source the very best in local, seasonal ingredients, making the most of the abundance North Devon has to offer.
We hope to welcome you soon.
Individually the food on the tasting menu was amazing, we just didn’t think it all came together as a full menu, each had very strong accompanying sauces which did make us feel a bit queezy, which resulted in my wife not being able to finish the final course. I understand you say it’s a simple and homely restaurant but I think tables and cutlery could be more refined when you are paying such a high price for the experience.
Quality high end food in a relaxed and pleasant small restaurant .We both enjoyed the evening .
Seafood dishes were completely exquisite as was the desert. I would have liked the lamb to be more tender. Overall excellent and a lovely treat. I would definitely recommend.
Probably the best meal I have ever had. Really relaxed setting and I couldn’t believe how quickly three hours had passed.
We had an absolutely fabulous meal, accompanied by very good wine and delivered with service that was just right - friendly and courteous, without ever intruding. It's worth going for the 6-course tasting menu as you get to sample a wider range of Thomas Carr's fine cooking but be warned this does become a big meal when you add in the complimentary bread and two amuse bouches!
Excellent, friendly staff and the food was some of the best dishes I have ever experienced. Would definetly return when I am back in the area.
This is the second time I have had the pleasure of dining at Thomas Carr at the Olive Room and I stand by my previous review, that this is the best meal I have ever had which I think would only be beaten by my next visit here. Fantastic value for money and worth every penny.
Excellent day with Thomas at the Master Class - prepared, cooked and plated two dishes as well as picked up lots of tips and tricks - will go back for another!
Another fabulous meal at the Olive Room. We've now Ben at least five times and never had anything that we didn't like.
All the fish dishes were over cooked and fish tasted as though it had been frozen and therefore not fresh. A real shame as the write up suggests the focus of the chef is on "Ultra fresh seafood" All other courses were very good. The atmosphere/decorations is very dull and poor.
Yet another fabulous evening of top quality food and wine - 6 Devine courses beautifully paired with excellent white, red and dessert wines. Eating doesn’t get better than this!
The food tasted amazing and presented beautifully but would have liked larger portions as came away slightly hungry. Service was not rushed which was nice.
Excellent food and service. What a pleasant experience.
Some of the best Michelin dishes we have tasted!
Amazing food and great front of house service. A truly memorable experience.
Amazing on all counts And a big thank you for the veggi taster Can’t remember the waitress name but thank you for finding the last 2 beers , prob one of the chefs , And so good to meet Tom at breakfast You’ve got real talent. Without the big ego We can’t wait to come back
Yet another visit to your wonderful restaurant and we brought another couple. Had a fabulous meal from the very limited menu and as always everyone was bowled over with gorgeous flavours and brilliant cooking. New wine selection was pleasant although I did love the range you had on the previous wine list but probably I will get to try more and enjoy them just as much!
For what is a Michelin star restaurant the restaurant itself seemed a little ordinary and the atmosphere was quiet. Although our table of four were chatting what we thought was quietly, we did wonder if the other diners thought we were being a little loud! The food was fantastic though and without any fault along with the service. We ate from the six course menu which after arriving at just before 7:30, we finished the meal at 10:45. It really didn't seem that long but we were glad we hadn't chosen the 8 course menu. The food really was the star of the show and for what we regarded as value for money. If we are in Ilfracombe again, we will come again.
Thank you for a very memorable evening. The presentation and quality of the food was lovely with truly yummy flavours. A real treat all round. 😋
A lovely relaxed dining experience, great service, stunning food and as part of the Exmoor food festival, excellent value for money
Absolutely delicious food and delightful service so thoroughly enjoyed our lunch. We will be back, thanks.
