About Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room
“A simple, homely restaurant beneath a B&B, run by an experienced local chef who trained under Nathan Outlaw. Ultra-fresh seafood is the focus, with dishes only confirmed once the day boat deliveries come in. Cooking is skilled” - MICHELIN guide inspectors
Recently awarded a Michelin star for the 2017 Michelin Guide, here at Thomas Carr @ The Olive Room in Ilfracombe, quality and comfort are paramount. We believe that fine dining is best enjoyed in a relaxed and unpretentious environment.
We are incredibly lucky to live and work in such a beautiful area. To take full advantage of our location, we source the very best in local, seasonal ingredients, making the most of the abundance North Devon has to offer.
We hope to welcome you soon.
A lovely evening with top notch food and service. Definitely lived up to high expectations.
Spectacular food full of flavour in a relaxed atmosphere. Friendly attentive service. A thoroughly enjoyable experience on a windy and wet Devon day.
Really delicious meal, we sampled the Exmoor tasting menu and the vegetarian options were all really very tasty followed by an extremely good Brownie. Nice varied wine menu alongside.
An enjoyable evening of good food in a charming restaurant
Starters were lovely. Mains, chicken was great but the bream was incredibly small, fairly ordinary and disappointing , 7 v small bites and it was over. Desserts nice but pretty ordinary, we expected more from the standard of the restaurant. The meal also took 2hrs from start to finish. Way too long in between courses, we were looking at the waitress for our food each time. We only got served dessert when 2 other tables did so can only assume the chef wanted to batch serve oddly. Overall we left disappointed and myself, as had the fish main, hungry. Shame as at the start of meal we were looking forward to coming back for another meal and checking out the normal menu (we had the Exmoor Food Fest menu) but definitely not now unfortunately.
Excellent food service and atmosphere. Couldn’t fault a thing, will definitely be back.
Absolutely superb! A great experience from start to finish.
Another fabulous meal at the Olive Room. It is rare that all three courses are delicious but not here. Everything was absolutely delicious. And at £30 a head for the Exmoor Good rest menu, a real bargain. Can't recommend highly enough. Book a table now!
As always, each dish is a little work of art, beautifully crafted to delight the eye as well as the taste buds! Intense but subtle flavours in often intriguing combinations. We like the simple decor and enjoy the relaxed atmosphere and friendly informality of the staff. Thank you for another lovely evening.
Our first visit . You did it all right - food atmosphere and service . The wine was also excellent. Thank you
Every time I have eaten at The Olive Room, it has been a real treat! This time I introduced our 10 year old son to fine dining and he loved it too. All 3 courses tasted amazing and were beautifully presented. The service was also excellent. We will continue to come to this restaurant whenever we can!
Slightly disappointed that we couldn’t have the whole tasting menu - this wasn’t made clear when booking. However food was fantastic and service was great! And thank you for the birthday extra treats for my partner!
Second time at Thomas care and had the 6 course taster menu. Majority of courses absolutely delicious. The amuse Bouche wasn’t the usual standard - Similar to standard fish cakes. The restaurant seemed a little tired/unkempt. The windows were dirty and furniture looked cheap/tired and the whole place in need of a Deep clean. This could be as off season. Both waitresses were friendly and nice but the younger blonde haired was of a 5/5 standard - dressed smartly, very knowledgeable about the food, wine etc. The other waitress was perhaps filling in as casually dressed, not as knowledgeable and often forgot to clear items from the table etc. Other diners wearing tracksuits was off putting. More ambience would be good - it’s very bright and not as clean/special as you’d like for what you pay.
Excellent meal. Interesting combinations and really tasty. A great way to celebrate a birthday. Great service - attentive and informative. Thanks to all at the Olive Room. Also a great breakfast in the morning.
Absolute delight! Superb food and excellent service, outstanding value for a mitchelin star restaurant probably the best we’ve ever visited.
Five stars all round. A wonderful dining experience during a dull and dreary twixtmas break in the area. Excellent value wine selections. Thank you sooo much.
A wonderful meal with friendly relaxed service both evening and at breakfast. We willl come back!
After the hubbub of Christmas the perfect relaxing lunch. A solid combination of flavour and style, not to mention the friendly service
Delicious food and great attention to detail.
The service was amazing from both the people waiting on us we didnt get their names but it was a guy and a girl an they were both brilliant. The food was lovely it wasnt all to our taste but that was more down to us then the food as we are both picky eaters. I must say some of the dishes was absolutely delicious.
Great food and wine, although a little disappointed only two bottles of our wine choice and one bottle of our dessert wine choice available
Our meal, wine and accommodation was all wonderful. Thank you :)
Excellent food and service. We will certainly come again. The only possibility for improvement might have been to freshen up the table decorations? But we loved it.
Food delicious but not enough of it would have helped if served with potatoes and a dish of vegetable. If we didn't have the bread would have gone home hungry.
An altogether excellent experience. The food was very good, if I had to find anything to criticise the Hake could have been served hotter and the Mediterranean crust, well, crustier, but that was a very minor complaint. Breakfast was superb the staff good and the room lovely. We will return
