About The Winking Prawn
Practically on the beach at North Sands Salcombe, The Winking Prawn has been welcoming guests for over 20 years. What started as a beach café is now… well, a very busy shabby chic beach café, attracting people from all walks of life and of all ages.
Serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, beers, wines, coffees, cakes and ice creams throughout the year, you will find everything from buckets of prawns to big juicy steaks and Devon cream teas on our menu
Our second visit as we loved it after our first time there two years ago. Sad to say the memories were better than the reality second time round. The food was disappointing, over priced and lacking in quality. My duck stir fry was a pile of stodgy noodles, tiny wafer thin duck pieces with soggy skin, and peppers which were either frozen or very over cooked. The kids enjoyed their ‘rocky road chocolate sundae’ (because they are kids and it was choc ice cream!), but for £7 you got a couple of balls of ice cream, whipped cream and a handful of mini marshmallows on top. The chocolate brownie pieces at the bottom were dry, crumbly and clearly very old or very over cooked. The young man who took our order was very pleasant; but the older waiter serving the food was very serious and obviously ready for his shift to end! It’s a great setting with the shabby chic quirky interior and amazing view, but average food at best. We won’t be going back again for dinner, but will opt for a coffee visit perhaps to enjoy the view. I think there will be much better places to enjoy seafood if you are looking for the full dining experience. Overall, disappointing service and forgettable food.
Very good service, relaxed atmosphere. Food was delicious and we enjoyed all 3 courses. Will return!
We have been many times, this time we just asked for a few tweaks on the dishes which we felt weren’t well received, not overly helpful. We put it down to the busy summer season? We had 2 small children with us and I asked if they could do a children’s knickerbocker glory. No you said. So they just had ice cream. It would have been nice to put some sauce on it or just jazz them up a bit, that’s all.
Another fun-filled night in the Winking Prawn, delicious food, lovely staff and great service...thank you
Fantastic end to our holiday, lovely meal, best we had in the area. Great service too. Can't fault it.
We love the Winking Prawn but after making an online reservation with a request for an outside table it is very disappointing to be told on arrival that we had to sit inside! This is particularly exasperating on a beautiful summers evening, with the sun going down, allied to the fact that most tables outside being empty!
Following a recommendation from a friend who had visited over 10 years ago, my husband and I decided to pay a visit whilst on holiday (and with grandparents minding the children!) and boy were we in for a treat. The food was incredible and service exemplary. We will definitely be returning in the future and letting everyone know who is heading to South Devon to pay a visit. Thank you for a wonderful evening.
Great location and lovely atmosphere. Would love to keep it a secret so it is quiet every time we go! Beautiful evening.
Disappointing that the loos were out of commission and we had to use the public loos up the road, but that being said the food was lovely and I would definitely recommend
Always a good evening at the Winking Prawn 🦐- Good Food, Friendly and helpful staff and a lovely atmosphere
Very good quality food and service was very friendly and professional. Setting is perfect for a seaside meal.
Could not recommend this place enough!! Lovely staff and amazing food!!!
Lovely, quirky and unique restaurant that everyone raves about....’oh, you’re going to Salcombe? You MUST eat at the Winking Prawn!’ delicious food.
Great food and friendly faces yet again! Already can’t wait for next time I’m in Devon! And a special Thankyou for making my sons 5th birthday even more special by singing him happy birthday and bringing his cake out!
Food atmosphere service impeccable BUT we were a little gobsmacked by the v high restaurant menu prices as this is a holiday seaside venue ?
Great location, catering for a young family vibe. Inside was simply TOO hot to handle without ventilation so opted for BBQ. Cajun salmon was great. Corn, haloumi should be priced as side options as don’t constitute good value at £20 for a veggie.
A genuinely great atmosphere, terrific food and well worth the visit
Very disappointed with the service and value for money. Unfortunately we cancelled our second reservation for the week.
Friendly excellent service lovely food thank you
Great evening, great food, great staff, we both enjoyed ourselves!
Great, chilled out place with some awesome food. Well worth a visit. The walk from Salcombe is also a very nice way to work up an appetite.
Walked to the bar for drinks due to waiting to be served for 15 mins, didnt see a smile from a waiter or waitress in 3 hours, and a very under average fruits de mer. Other than that the prawn cocktail and seafood tower to start were lovely and the monkfish very pleasant. A wonderful location for a restaurant but a shame it underperformed in other areas
Hi Samuel, thank you for your feedback. I am pleased to hear that on balance you had a good time but I am sorry that you didn't get a chance to see the team's lovely smiles - you clearly got them at their most concentrated. I am also sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy the fruits de mer - it's usually a favourite! Nonetheless, I am pleased to hear that everything else was enjoyed. Hope to see you again soon!
Quality local seafood in a friendly atmosphere. However, the "prawn juice" beer tastes nothing like prawns - confused and disappointed.
Owner needs an intense course on customer service! Pompous and darn right rude!!!!!!!!
