Lovely surroundings, but very cold uncomfortable to eat. and enjoy. Limited menu for a special day
We visited before Christmas. We were very disappointed. I ordered Sirloin steak. My wife had some smoked salmon main. My steak was the smallest I have ever seen in a restaurant. It was a joke. My vegeable dauphinoise was a smear on the plate. It seemed to me that the chef was concentrating on presentation while neglecting the overall quality. Good presentation is all very laudable but only after the basics have been attended to. My wife's cured salmon was tasteless. This is the second bad experience in a row and we really can't see any reason to come back. It's a real shame. The place itself is so lovely and the views in summer amazing. But the food is really just not good enough for the beautiful surroundings.
Just visited Hencote for the second time and was equally impressed as the first visit. Excellent service with detailed explanation by the sommelier of their delicious wines. Fabulous menu and every course was delicious and very attractive on the plate. Impressive desserts if you have room for them!
We're not told there would be bits in bottom of bottle of red wine, when told the waitress she disappeared then come back and said they were sorry, not good customer service. Felt after £331 didn't feel we'd have a 5* experience.
Service & Food was outstanding in particular the Pear one of the desserts. The ambience was exceptional thanks to the chef & his selection of courses plus Santa's helpers. We will be dining next Xmas , would like a window seat. Andrew Fielding & Lorane Scott
Christmas Day, sun shining. Food and drink excellent. A perfect occasion!
A lovely meal with excellent service in a great setting. Rather quiet when we visited but still a great concept so we will certainly be back.
Absolutely superb. Highly recommend. An amazing venue. Excellent food and service. Cannot fault it.
It was our 20th wedding anniversary - and you couldn’t have made it any more perfect for us , so thank you so much xx
Excellent meal, friendly attentive service from the staff, lovely not to be pressured into leaving our table. The food was superb, well presented and inventive, especially the ‘pear’!
Christmas Day lunch . Each course was beautifully presented and very tasty . Service was excellent We will be back Highly recommend
Such a great evening- food was amazing , safe a brilliant at atmosphere- thank you
Friendly polite attentive staff. Food arrived promptly, which was of excellent quality and flavour. We received very good service. Ideal for that special treat.
Always a pleasure to visit The View. With Shrewsbury and the Shropshire Hills laid out before you, it is an unforgettable experience. Food and cocktails are excellent and complement the occasion.
Great food and service, atmosphere needs work. Lower lighting would help
Me and my wife really enjoyed our stay at Hencote. The wine tour was very informative and the wine tasting was enjoyable. Our evening meal was to a very high standard from the food we had to how attentive the staff were. The glamping experience was lots of fun too and had a good balance between luxury and the feeling of camping. Would definitely like to return again at some point in the future!
It felt very Covid secure.
Our first time visiting but will not be our last. Great venue, excellent food and of course superb wine. Many thanks for a lovely afternoon.
Lovely setting but overpriced
Really enjoyable meal, all food was excellently presented, served in good time and staff were attentive and always around if you needed them! Lovely restaurant with a great atmosphere!
This was our first visit to Hencote and were really looking forward to it. On arrival, we thought the atmosphere was great with really attentive staff. We eat out regularly and at the beginning of the meal, we said it would be good to come here once a month after the initial impression. However we shared a chicken liver parfait which in our opinion was very bland and had the faintest hint of chicken liver flavour. We didn't comment to the waitress at the time. I had the monkfish which was excellent and my wife had the turkey ballotine. She ordered extra gravy/sauce because she has a medical problem. She tasted the sauce and said wow this is salty. I had a taste and yes, it tasted super salty to the point of being inedible. So, at the end of the course the waitress asked how the food was we said the gravy tasted far to salty. She relayed this to the chef and she came back and the chef had said 'no salt was added, it was a reduction'. We then had a discussion with the manager about had anyone actually tasted the jus/reduction, without a clear response. So, we were left with the feeling that chef knows best and we were uncultured Hicks from the sticks. The manager offered to take off the cost of the gravy (£1) and asked if we wanted more drinks, but we'd already had a bottle of wine. So, in summary we were looking forward to a great experience but were left with a sour (and salty) taste in our mouths, with a food experience which in no way matched the environment/service. Lots of our friends asked before we went to let them know what Hencote was like and I will duly report back. I don't think we will be coming back in a hurry unless there is a change in chef/chefs.
Our party of four had a lovely evening and we were all delighted with the food; I would go as far as to say that my rib-eye steak was the best I’ve ever had. Well done. The portions were ideal amd well presented. The only tinge of disappointment was the cost of the drinks which I thought were overpriced. That said, we will be reserving another table again soon Thank you.
The booking process was the only negative
Whilst the food was very good, there should be a much larger/better choice (and reasonably priced) of wines by the glass. The service has certainly improved since we were there last, but it still needs to be slicker..
