About The Swan at Lavenham
From innovative dining and afternoon tea in The Gallery Restaurant to long lunches in our modern British Brasserie; al fresco summer days in our courtyard terrace to candlelit dinner parties in our private rooms – you’ll find an assortment of dining experiences with us at our restaurants in Suffolk. Drink, sip and socialise with exquisite wines at our wine dinners or lounge in our characterful Airmen’s Bar where real ales and cocktails meet time-gone-by history.
Booked as website stated that there was a vegan menu, which I confirmed by phone. There was the following choice in the Gallery: Starter - salad or sliced beetroot Main - another salad or mushroom risotto No one goes out for dinner to have a salad, so I selected the risotto which was extremely salty. I've never sent a meal back before but did this time and the waiting staff were happy to do this. It just meant my wife and I ate our anniversary dinner separately. Breakfast the following morning was farcical. No vegan options on the menu, at all. I asked for porridge with water but was offered it with soy milk. This was great until it transpired that our coffee took half an hour to arrive because my porridge had exhausted the kitchen's supply of non-dairy milk! Someone had been sent to the shop to replenish but there was no communication despite asking repeatedly, as my wife could have had her coffee with milk and I would have had black. Judith was very apologetic but both meals were exceedingly disappointing and not at all what I expected from such an accredited establishment which advertises a vegan menu. Spa and the staff there were excellent, and our room was very comfortable, it was the kitchen that really needs some attention if younger clientele are going to be attracted and retained.
Everything absolutely superb; food, staff and first class service in this wonderful old timbered building. We can't wait to stay again.
Enjoyed our cream tea in the beautiful garden at the swan, great service, it was fabulous
Great night out wonderful service from start to finish. FOOD TO DIE FOR,DELIS😋
Lovely family afternoon tea to celebrate my wife's 50th birthday. Fantastic cakes and sandwiches, staff very flexible with requests and relaxed environment.
Poor start, on arrival we found that we were booked in for lunch in the Brasserie whereas we had booked for afternoon tea in the Gallery Restaurant. The staff corrected the error quickly & efficiently to make up for it. we ordered tea & coffees whilst we decided on which menu to have. The tea came quickly, but we had to remind staff for our coffees. The quality of the afternoon teas was excellent and the staff were all polite, friendly and very accommodating. We will not hesitate to visit again.
We really enjoyed our high tea for my Mum's birthday, although we appeared to have picked a busy day! There were lots of people so service was a little slower and the room was very hot, but we still enjoyed a great afternoon with fab food!
Excellent all round .
The Swan is a beautifully historic and wonderfully atmospheric hotel. The room was comfortable and airy, with visible ancient timber beams. Food in both restaurants was very good, with a reasonable choice. The spa was well appointed and easy to get to with excellent locker and changing facilities. The staff throughout the hotel were excellent, exuding charm and professionalism. Overall, we had a lovely stay.
The surroundings are lovely but the chairs really need some attention! My chair had an iron print on it! The afternoon tea was nice but a few things would have made it better; if you advertise the sandwich with gherkin it should have gherkin, if you are drinking alcohol the tea shouldn’t be served at the same time, there needs to be another round of sandwiches...the sweet far outweighed the savoury, it felt a little like there wasn't enough staff-those there did their best but they were stretched and as a result the service was a little underwhelming. I was also very disappointed that despite being told a number of times that we were celebrating a 60th birthday nothing was done about it which I think was a real shame.
We have dined at the Swan several times in the past and the food and service has always been excellent. Unfortunately yesterday (19 May) the service wasn't up to its usual standard. I ordered a salad and specifically asked for the celery to be removed. The waitress repeated this request back to me but still the salad came with celery. I mentioned this to the waitress who asked if I would like another salad made. However, we had waited so long (the service was very slow) for our food that I declined as I didn't want my husband to eat his food on his own or have it get cold while he waited for my new salad. The waitress was kind enough to offer a drink on the house as compensation. I appreciate that there was a 40s event going on so the hotel was busy but the staff should still be able to provide the same good level of service during busy times.
Brilliant service and the food was wonderful. 1st time there. Our waitress Charlotte was amazing and asnwered all our questions about the menu too.
Had a really lovely lunch on our way up to Center Parcs. It was the perfect start to 5 days of celebrations for my wife's 60th birthday.
Well looked after by staff
A very enjoyable evening. I look forward to returning!
Superb service, of a style rarely encountered now, in overwhelmingly lovely surroundings - with piano accompaniment! Sunday lunch was very good - but not a meal on which you can fully assess the talents of the chef on duty, so we’ll have to come back! (Hardly a chore!) Thanks to all duty staff for constantly conveying such a warm sense of welcome - plus attentive service.
We enjoyed afternoon tea at The Swan in May. The atmosphere was tranquil. We enjoyed very much the luscious baked goods and very tasty savoury sandwiches. We would definitely have tea at the Swan again. Thank you!
Lovely and very helpful staff. Delicious food with excellent service. A very nice room. We had a lovely stay.
As always beautiful food and excellent service
Very friendly staff and the best scrambled eggs in the world
Very kind arranging a disable parking for my husband.
Very enjoyable afternoon tea. Nice atmosphere and very good service.
very slow service, had to wait about 40 mins for first course to arrive. The restaurant was not busy and there was no explanation for why the service was so slow
Excellent place very helpful.staff especially Henry. Had an issue with the room which was resolved immediately
I booked a table for 2 for 3rd May at 1 pm in the gallery restaurant. I made the booking on the 2nd of May with a member of staff whose 1st language was not English and after spelling my name and repeating myself several times I thought I had made a booking. I was offered an email confirmation and accepted this and gave my email address. The next morning, I had not received an email so I rang again and spoke to a helpful lady on reception who told me I had no reservation. She offered to make one and did so. She also offered me an email confirmation which I accepted. She also gave me the car park pin number. When we arrived at the Hotel, no one spoke to us or even looked at us as we walked through to the Gallery despite us smiling at them. We asked at the desk just prior to going down the passageway to restaurant about our reservation but were told that it did not appear on her system. Eventually we went through to the Gallery where we were seated my a large man who was monosyllabic and had had a 'charisma bypass'. Our waitress, Judith M was very nice and she took our order and was happy to talk to us. The food when it came was very well presented and my Barnsley Chop was beautifully cooked. Our whole meal was very nice but when the Maitre d' came to top up our water there was no feeling we were being served but it was just his job! I felt the cost of the meal was fair but the coffees and the small glass of House Red Wine were overpriced. When we left the restaurant none of the staff we passed looked at us, acknowledged us or even made eye contact, in fact the opposite as we felt we were being deliberately ignored. What should have been a pleasant Birthday Lunch was marred by the coldness of your staff.
