About The Sussex Ox
A country pub with its own organic farm always serving the finest local food and drink.
We wrote on our reservation that we wanted a highchair, which wasn’t there when we arrived. So we asked the lady who took our drinks order for a highchair, which she never brought over. In the end we had to go up and get it ourselves. They left the drinks tray on our table after dropping off the drinks. We piled our starter plates on top of it thinking it would be removed then. But the plates were just taken off and the tray was left there until a lady cleared our glasses and took it off the chair that we had put it on. The sirloin steaks were awful quality. We ordered medium rare, which they came as, but we left so much as they were so tough and grisly. We never received a check back throughout the meal, and our toddler started kicking off by the end as she was tired, so we went up to ask for the bill and just paid and left. On a normal occasion we would have said something at the check back, but there wasn’t one, and we just wanted to hurry up and go. Starters were good though, and although forgetful, the waitresses were all very friendly.
Almost drove past it as at night there was no visible sign from the direction I came. However, once found, plenty of parking although again, not lit. The pub is a lovely country pub and the staff were mainly friendly, helpful and polite. Service was efficient. We both had the burgers and the quality of the meat was exceptional. It was absolutely delicious and looked great in a brioche bun with onion rings and fat chips. Honeycomb parfait for pudding was very sweet but very tasty. We'll definitely be back once lockdown is over and will bring the family next time.
Good quality food and cheery service.
Sunday roast was amazing.
welcoming atmosphere, well spaced out dining in wonderful rural pub. Great roast after a long walk on the Downs. Thank you
A very lovely relaxed country pub serving delicious food. A definite place to visit again when in the area.
The roast dinner was lovely, we always enjoy the food and the service is good too. Highly recommend
Unfortunately the roast potatoes let the roast dinner down (all 3 of us thought so) and we had a bubble and squeak to start which tasted very bland. It was a shame because this restaurant has a good reputation and was highly recommended to us. All the staff were lovely though. We would return but not on a Sunday.
The only thing that was wrong was my starter was slightly cold. Apart from that everyting else ok. Good choices on starter mains and puds. service excellent. Yes i would go back again
We enjoyed a tasty lunch in your cosy front bar. As usual the food was delicious and the staff were friendly and helpful. We weren’t hurried despite us sitting and chatting for so long. It was clear that you were working hard to enforce the Covid requirements. This is my favourite pub... and has been for 30+ years. I hope you will be able to open again soon.
We chose from the fixed price lunch menu. Soup was good although could've been hotter. Main course of burger and fries was very heavily seasoned in terms of salt and pepper. We chose to share an apple crumble for dessert but had to wait a long time for it to arrive. We had a 12:30 booking and didn't leave until nearly 14:30, even though when the booking was made it was indicated that we had to vacate our table by 14:00 (this was not enforced thankfully)
Always going to be difficult in the time of the pandemic but despite the weather, everything was great. Food was lovely, although I should have gone with the cheese because the pumpkin curry filled me up leaving no space for dessert! We felt very welcome and it was great to be able to eat with the dog inside with us. Staff were really lovely and we will come back again once we are allowed to visit our daughter again (she is at Sussex University).
Excellent country pub restaurant. Great food and very attentive staff.
We all really enjoyed our meals, excellent food and service, we will be back again as soon as we can!
Always a lovely experience
Lovely pub and good food! We went for an early roast for my husband’s birthday and v impressed. Will visit again if in the area. Recommend the sticky toffee pud! Friendly service.
Great little find. Very friendly and welcoming nestled in beautiful countryside! Definitely will return.
We really enjoyed our roast dinner, following a long and windy walk around the area. It was definitely one of the best roasts we have had in a long time
What a lovely place and atmosphere. We drove some way to come and it was worth it. Sat fireside with a view over the hills. A very much needed treat. I've already recommended to several friends. We will return.
Delicious Sunday lunch -helpful, cheerful staff, beautiful surroundings. Perfect. Thank you
lovely lunch. The main was a little pricey but delicious.
One of my favorite pubs in Sussex - a great atmosphere, wonderful service and delicious food.
Lovely food, friendly staff and excellent service. Will be back but probably not for a while owing to distance for us.
Food was excellent- atmosphere, even in COVID times, was lovely.
