About The Sussex Ox
A country pub with its own organic farm always serving the finest local food and drink.
First time visit and we will definitely be back.
Always good - steaks were perfect - staff super
We'd never been before and will come back! Very nice food -the only dish that may be wasn't spot on was the orange mousse was too sweet and I love sweet!! But everyone was friendly and the choices were a mixture of creative and traditional with a twist. Thank you!
Lovely service. Super setting and ambience Great food - I just wish you would serve cod rather than pollock. And ice in the elderflower would have been appreciated...it was quite warm without!
The best place in the Eastbourne area to have lunch. However I don't want too many people turning up as there may not be room for me!
Thank you. We we all made to feel so welcome including daisy our golden retriever
Average roast. Slow service had to ask for water 3 times. Dessert selection not that appealing
Delicious food, professional and friendly staff in a gorgeous countryside setting.
Great food and atmosphere. I would defintely go back
We always have a wonderful meal at the Sussex ox. The food is always amazing. Sunday was no different.
Our experience on Sunday 28th (lunchtime) was ok, but not outstanding. The roasts were quite nice, however one person ordered a vegetarian option of potato gnocchi, it was extremely small around a third of the size of the roasts, we all felt embarrassed when she finished her meal, (the size of a starter) and we were still eating, we offered her vegetables from our roasts as she was still hungry. We ordered puds, the apple crumble was disappointing, the apple was pureed and the topping very minimal and not traditional, had the description matched the dish, i.e granola and oat topping we would not have ordered this pud. Lastly the service at best could only be described as sporadic, the staff were pleasant but our food arrived without cutlery and we had to wait for this to be delivered, perhaps you could consider providing cutlery at the same time as the food. Two of the main course plates were cleared from the table, two remained and we waited for over five minutes for the remaining plates to be cleared, (by a different member of your team) The service was not smooth or efficient, i.e. with both the mains and puds the waitress returned to our table to repeat our order again as nothing was written down. However your team seemed nice, and therefore we have hopefully given fair and honest feedback to enable you to benefit from this.
Good food and service, this is my "go to" place for special occasions. My mother and I really enjoyed the special game menu.
A real gem! Superb customer service.
A great find and well worth the drive from Hove.
Nice friendly pub and good food
Disappointing roast dinner. 2 slices of roast lamb, hard reheated roast potatoes.
We had a lovely lunch. Staff very attentive and patient waiting for us to decide what to choose! Good value.
Always a friendly service and the views are stunning....
Great idea; nice pub; good drinks; good staff but let down by a roast beef which had sat in water and turned mushy. It was like pate
The pub is in a great location and the staff and atmosphere were both good. Unfortunately the food was not of great quality in that the meat in the roast dinners was overcooked and tough and the roast potatoes were undercooked. The bowls of broccoli in cheese sauce appear to have been sitting under heat lamps for a considerable period as the cheese sauce had dried up. The two vegetarians who both had the aubergine dish were also disappointed. For the price we felt the food should have been to a higher standard. We have eaten at the Pelham Arms in Lewes recently which has similar;y priced menu and the food is excellent
Excellent local pub with grub from the owners farm and local beers. Fantastic garden and great destination for one of the many fab walks in the Cuckmere Valley
We were delighted with the use of the front room and the outside tables - perfect for the number of folk attending. We were so lucky with the weather! Variety, amount of food and service was great. We had many comments praising our choice of venue.
Service impeccable, beautiful pub with a great atmosphere. Great starters, great puddings, great drinks. Steak was fab, lamb was v tender but a little bland. It was served on a chickpea and tomato base which wasn’t great as the sauce was far too sweet. Not a great combo. All in a truly lovely evening and we’ll definitely be back.
I’m so pleased to have discovered another country pub that is still thriving. Booking on a Sunday seemed essential as the place was packed! Plenty of parking. We went on a Sunday lunchtime, so didn’t have the ‘full’ menu to choose from. Instead it was all about the roast dinners with a couple of other options. Delicious roast. Only scored 4 stars out of 5 from me as the roast potatoes were the usual disappointment when eating out! Certainly not crispy. However puddings were delicious. This is a truly lovely place to enjoy a nice meal. The pub itself has a bar area with tables and also a restaurant area with tables. Both looked lovely and I would have been happy sitting in either. As it happened we were in the restaurant area. We will definitely be revisiting this pub, apart from the roast potatoes (which are fine if you like them like that), I can’t think of anything negative to say. All good.
Lunch for 8. Very good beer and cider, excellent local produce cooked extremely well, wine list interesting and staff really welcoming. No faults identified!
