About The Stables Kitchen @ Hopetoun House
The Stables Kitchen
One of the delights of Hopetoun is a visit to the Stables Kitchen, a clever and sensitive restoration of the 18th Century Adam Stables transformed into a comfortable and cosy eatery, complete with table service and a delicious contemporary menu. Only a few miles from Edinburgh, you can escape to another world and soak up the relaxed atmosphere within a spectacular setting.
Home Cooked and Freshly Prepared Menu
The ingredients we use in our cooking are important to us. Food provenance in the form of local, Scottish, good welfare and ethically traded ingredients is a key element to ensure we are providing fabulous food quality with minimal environmental impact and are supporting the local economy.
We love celebrating what Scotland has to offer, and our chefs prepare our menu using seasonally Scottish ingredients wherever possible. The eggs in our baking are Scottish free range and we’re proud to use Graham’s Family Diary milk, butter and cream throughout our menu. As well as this, our delicious Sunday roast dinners are a crowd-pleaser, using local produce and meat.
We do hope you enjoy your visit and agree that our menu reflects some of the best food Scotland has to offer. It is advised to book in advance to guarantee a table at your preferred time.
Traditional Afternoon Teas
For a special celebration, treat someone to a unique experience in style, and book a traditional full Scottish Afternoon Tea.
At Hopetoun House our Afternoon Tea is a gourmet delight offering filled sandwiches, homemade fruit scones with lashings of organic cream and Hopetoun strawberry jam, along with a fabulous assortment of freshly made savoury and sweet treats. Included is a pot of loose leaf organic, fair trade tea, speciality coffee or a rich Belgian hot chocolate.
We also have a wonderful selection of treats available on our children’s menu including our Afternoon Tea, specifically designed for small fingers.
Staff were lovely, very friendly and attentive. Food was good but no better than afternoon tea I've had at half the price. The room was fine but nothing special. Have a look at the afternoon teas at Callendar House -Amazing value for money and in an absolutely stunning setting.
Really enjoyed the ambience of Hopetoun House although the Stables tea room was not so opulent as the rest. The service was ok although there was a bit of a queue when we arrived and no-one attending to it. The afternoon tea was a little disappointing. For almost £50 for two I would expect a better quality of food. However it was a pleasant experience and I would go again. Thank you.
We were really disappointed with our afternoon tea. We had to queue to get in as there was only one waitress checking your name and allocating your table. .we were offered tea/coffee which arrived very quickly, however by the time the afternoon tea arrived our coffee was cold so we had to order more. The tiny scones were (brick hard) mince pies (brick hard and burnt on the bottom) Coconut little christmas puddings very dry and couldn't bite or slice with knife. The Ladies at the next table also had the same complaints as ourselves. Lacked any festive atmosphere! Fairy lights on the wall were on when we went in then went off for the entire sitting. Stuck in the corner next to a cupboard, very dark. On the upside the sandwiches were lovely and fresh and waiting staff friendly. £44 for afternoon tea for two I felt was way to steep for the quality, we would have been better eating in the stables restaurant for half the price. Disappointed as my mum had previously had an afternoon tea here and really enjoyed it,unfortunately not on this occasion. DISAPPOINTED
Was lovely could have done with more Sandwiches though & scones was very Minimal.
I’ve been for afternoon tea before and it was good but this was disappointing. The room we were put in was a sad feeling back room crammed with tables to make as much money as possible. The service wasn’t great. It took ages to be able to order our coffee. I asked a waiter about allergies. He said he would get the manager to speak to me. She didn’t. I spoke to him again and he said “oh it’s ok”. Just not reassuring when you are with someone with allergies. I had made them aware of the allergies in advance but wanted to check which is perfectly reasonable when you’re dealing with severe allergies. The salmon sandwich was soggy. The scones were minuscule. The other cakes were just not good. The mince pie was rock hard and over done. The trifle was wet and soggy. The coconut Christmas pudding was solid and dry. The orange filo pastry was overpowering. I’ve also never had afternoon tea anywhere where they can’t give you something like a latte. And £22 per person it was a complete rip off. I though we were having a special treat but really we’d have been better going somewhere in south queensferry. I’ll not be back.
Will definitely do this again. Wonderful day out.
Cakes were delicious but sandwiches were very soggy
Could have perhaps been more attentive in relation to tea/cofee top up as not that hot but very pleasant if asked. Food was lovely.
We havery been coming for several years and absolutely enjoyed our experience. This year very disappointing. Sandwiches left off service, chocolate truffles left off service. A small thing but our table had no xmas decoration on it at all. Waitread never offered prosecco. Tablecloth marked. All in all very disappointing for the money. We would then be back next year. We will go elsrwhere where we will receive a lot more for our money.
It was excellent - we had a wheelchair and needed a gluten free afternoon tea and it was no problem at all - thanks 😊
We were unable to have our afternoon tea at hopetoun as our 2 children could not be catered for as the children’s afternoon tea menu advertised on your website was not available??we left having had nothing to eat with 2 very disappointed little girls 😕
This was a return visit, but the four of us were bitterly disappointed. The room was cold, lacked atmosphere and fairy lights were not working. The scones and mince pies were hard and everything else mediocre. Really not a great experience and expensive for what we got. I would rather have had less but better quality. Will think twice before returning.
Delicious festive afternoon tea and very attentive, helpful and friendly staff
A lovely start to the festive season. My only moan really is that it’s quite expensive for what it is...more savoury’s please-only 6 teeny sandwiches between 2. Delicious non the less and will of course be back next year.
We absolutely loved our afternoon tea. Food service and the festive room were all lovely thank you!
We book afternoon tea every year before visiting the Christmas Fair at Hopetoun House as it’s so popular. The Stables is an oasis of peace and calm at very busy time. The food , service and staff are excellent, you couldn’t ask for more. Looking forward to next year already.
Lovely festive afternoon tea. Will certainly return
Not been here for an Afternoon Tea for a few years but it was as delicious (even more so) as I remembered it to be and so filling! Catered for allergy requirements and great for kids too.
Lovely food served by attentive and mannerable staff. Love the new look and the big comfy settees.
Food was great but not worth an extra £15 each on standard afternoon tea, compared to what people on next table had. Staff were friendly and helpful, service was good.
It was a birthday celebration afternoon tea, and we really enjoyed the experience. Great service.
Really relaxed atmosphere, very attentive staff.
We had a lovely experience at Hopetoun House for an afternoon lunch. Beautifully presented and tasted amazing!!!. Jaun was attentive, polite and clearly enjoyed his job. Would definitely book again. ❤️😁
A much enjoyed experience. We had afternoon tea and it was delicious.
This was my first visit and I cannot wait to come back for another afternoon tea! Everything was exceptional from the service (Juan) to the food. We were attended to right away and there was nit even a wait for our tea etc to be served. Next time I will bring my little girl so she can sample the kids afternoon tea. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon!
