Wonderful place, food excellent, great atmosphere and great service!
Sadly our dining experience at The Set last Friday, 10th January 2020 was very poor. The waiting staff were extremely pleasant but through no fault of their own, service was very slow. We waited about 2 hours for our starters and when they arrived, one of them was uncooked. The replacement was not much better. Our main courses (venison) were nice but the portion of venison was extremely small - my husband estimated it at about 1oz! The vegetarian/vegan option of roots, etc was unfortunately horrible and left almost uneaten. We decided not to have pudding and instead went to McDonalds around the corner for burgers and icecream. Sadly, breakfast was just as slow, so we ate out for the rest of the weekend. The staff were extremely apologetic and very pleasant and we enjoyed our drinks in the bar, especially on Saturday evening, when we were joined by friends. The cocktails were especially good, the Apple & Plum one being outstanding. A lovely hotel spoilt by poor food.
Absolutely delicious food, cocktails and wine. Couldn’t fault the service - such an enjoyable lunch!
It was i very nice a interesting
Quite simply the best breakfast experience I have ever had in Brighton or anywhere in the world. If you don't try it then it is your loss and a big mistake!
We put comment on Instagram. Love everything about the place!
Everything was good. Food, service and loved the eclectic feeling of the place. Just go and enjoy....
We come annually for one of our birthdays usually. It's always brilliant. Staff are warm and welcoming, food is amazing and it's always a, good vibe. Never disappoints! Thank you ❤️
This restaurant is perplexing, not in a bad way, but complex. I first ate here in October of 2018, and had the set menu for lunch. I was blown away by the quality of food, service, and amount of food received. A complimentary Negroni was provided upon entry and it was an all round pleasant dining experience. Based on this positive experience, I decided to book an evening meal in early Jan 2020. The atmosphere and service was as expected fantastic, but what felt lacking was the food. I can't help feel conflicted. I applaud creativity and experimentation, and yet the food wasn't to quite the quality I had hoped, perhaps at the cost of going too far from simplicity. Marmite butter with caramelised onions and bread, along with smoked salmon and horseradish sauce were provided as intros. I guess you either love it or you hate it...... Apologies. In all seriousness I personally liked the butter, although I felt it can only be eaten along with the onions, as alone with bread it's too overpowering. This is a dish which will polarise customers I feel. The smoked salmon lacked flavour and the texture was off, a shame, but the horseradish sauce was delicious. Combinations with said sauce is something which could be further explored. Carpaccio beef for instance. I recommend the Hebridees smokehouse for getting good quality smoked salmon. I had the Wagyu beef shin to start. The meat was perfectly cooked and was beautifully tender. However, the flavours were somewhat lacking. It was almost too subtle. When Wagyu is in the title, greatness should always follow. The Pan fried Pollock was to follow. Cooked near perfection, the skin was slightly overdone and slightly over salted. However, the flesh was delectable and had wonderful flavours. The melon balls added a lovely sense of freshness to the dish. The turnips provided a 'grounding' effect of earthiness and had a fantastic flavour. It was almost too intense. The caviar was a nice creamy contrast as well. The sauce paired well with it all and tied the dish together. For deserts I tried the Bay apple and the Chocolate, Coffee, Milk. Interesting names aside, the chocolate desert had wonderful contrasts of the coffee jelly, chocolate 'bits?' and the sauce. The Bay apple too was delicious, although it tasted like cornflakes had been sprinkled over. Based of the marmite butter, this didn't feel too out of place. However, the caramel sauce at the bottom was far too rich and wasn't incorporated into the bowl, so when you got to the bottom that was all that was left, and boy was it strong. Tried two cocktails which were decent and fairly priced. The main issue I have isn't the food persay, it's the price tag that accompanies it. For two courses it cost's £34, for three it's £38. Seem's silly to get just two, but that price seems extreme. Technically the food was mostly cooked well, but I feel some combinations and some dishes were sub par for the price paid. This restaurant is a few tweaks from greatness. I would still recommend, but warn friends and family of the price tag. I like how the business is run, and the ever changing menu. It's good to eat modern British cuisine sourced locally. It feels refreshing to eat here and it feels different. The atmosphere is good, the staff and service are excellent. However, perhaps either reduce price slightly, or perfect the menu and food. so it warrants the price tag. I look forward to eating here again and seeing how it develops.
Loved the Sunday Sharing Feast! Every dish was brilliant, the service friendly and the welcome drink a nice touch. Will be back soon!
First visit and won’t be our last. Loved everything about this place - cosy atmosphere, amazing food and drink, really helpful and friendly staff. Hope to be back soon.
The staff were lovely and the food fantastic. It's a shame I don't live closer as I'd love to visit again. I will certainly recommend the restaurant to friends and family. The daytime music was a little too clubby at times but later in the afternoon/eve it was more chilled out and appropriate.
We had a wonderful breakfast at The Set, while staying at Artist Residence. The food was delicious and the service great. It took a little while for the food to arrive, but it was well worth the wait. We wish we lived in Brighton and could pop into The Set more often!
We thought the food was superb and so succulent. So many delicious courses. The only downside was that you stopped serving drinks at 11. Very strange at New Years Eve, as we would have stayed longer. The restaurant emptied at 11?
We came with friends for a New Years Brunch as we'd so loved our previous 2 breakfast trips to the Set. The same lovely LOVELY waitress was there all 3 times, what an asset I'm sorry I don't know her name but she's an ace. The food was EXCELLENT - ooo those mushrooms!. Juices and coffees just lovely., all the milks in the world available and not a hassle at all. Huge compliments ono the Virgin Mary - and that coming from our friends who used to run a very high end and lovely boutique hotel of their own. We'll be back and will recommend. we've had a such a lovely time there. Breakfast is all we know but cannot believe it isn't a good indicator of the rest of the place :)
A very enjoyable meal I have been several times and each time has been very good thank you
I visited the set for breakfast on my birthday after being recommended the restaurant by a colleague. The food was wonderful, the best bacon I have ever tasted. My partner and I will be returning it was fantastic
Really lovely restaurant, excellent food and service.
Great meal and service, our fourth time eating with you, we will be back.
Very friendly, great food
Second visit - two years apart - and still one of my favourite places to dine in Brighton.
