About The Scallop Shell
The Scallop Shell is an award winning fish and chip restaurant and seafood grill in Bath. We serve up traditional favourites like lightly battered, flaky cod and haddock and seasonal delights from the early morning coastal markets. Our chips are peeled and freshly cut from the best seasonal spuds and prepared daily for you in our beautiful spud room. The Scallop Shell is driven by a passion for seafood from Garry Rosser, who returned to the city where his career as a chef began when he opened the Scallop Shell in 2015. Now occupying two floors and a beautiful terrace, The Scallop Shell is open for lunch and dinner.
The fact that the service staff don't actually take your order means that there is no opportunity for them to advice you on the menu. Instead I had to call a waiter over to ask his advice. What I was after was a description of some of the dishes which would make them sound appetizing and help on my decision. Instead, the waiter merely told me what he liked and was critical of the other dishes, which really didn't encourage me to the food - there was absolutely no enthusiasm for the dishes. After ordering the plaice, I'm sorry but it didn't taste fresh at all, and if it was fresh, why wasn't the full fish served? The chips were mainly the crumbs from a pile of chips and had not been freshly fried. The fish itself was cold. When I asked for mayonnaise I was told there was only aioli - why??? Finally, is it not normal to provide a bowl of lemony water or wipes if you have had to remove bones from the fish? I was provided with neither. As for dessert - well there was no one around to ask me so I went elsewhere. I'm sorry Scallop Shell but my experience was certainly nothing like your Instagram feed and if you are gong to charge £16 for fish and chips, try and make it nice and encourage your staff to get your customers excited about the menu. I am a huge fan of fish and was so excited by my visit - I was so disappointed!
Really great service. And the food was incredible!
Really enjoyed the food and atmosphere will definitely be back
We had a lovely evening, great food, very friendly service, will certainly return.
Great plaice to eat, staff happy and chipping in all the thyme! Serious note. Not our first visit so not a one off comment. Consistently a good experience
Without doubt the best fish and chips in the South West!
Consistently brilliant; fresh fish and great chips. Best for miles around!
As good as ever. We were given The table I asked for online. Staff very efficient and friendly.
Excellent food, great service and polite staff Good value in a lively and quite loud atmosphere Always busy so book in advance
The food and service were excellent. I wii be back!
The Scallop Shell is the perfect mix of excellent food and informal, friendly surroundings.
The whole experience was perfect - fantastic food, too. Thank you to the whole team. We'll be back soon!
Excellent meal - as always. Unusually, I fancied a dessert but the range offered was very limited. I went without - probably better for me.
Fun place, delicious fish n’chips.
We enjoyed our first visit so much we came back the following day. Fish menu changes according to local supplies - the fisherman’s lunch is amazing value and quality, as are the other dishes we tried over 2 visits. Love the decor, great service overall. Fabulous!!
We always enjoy our visits to your restaurant. It has a lovely casual vibe and great food and drink. Thanks for another happy evening.
Bon experience, à renouveler sans aucun probleme
Great selection of fresh and shell fish. Well prepared and perfectly cooked. Service friendly and efficient.
Very good value for money and delicious sea food!
Really great seafood and a great wine list too.
Thank you for a fantastic evening - rocking for a Tuesday too !
Lovely staff , food great and always a great atmosphere . I do miss the take away service you had . Thanks
To be honest I don’t normally do reviews. The food and menu in the Scollop Shell is great and it’s so nice to get decent fish and chips like theirs inland. Unfortunately same can not be said about the service. We did book online so said this when entering the restaurant, after taking our name the waiter walked over to a bank of tables and waived his hand over them, we assumed meaning take your pick as he said nothing and walked off. After waiting for about 10 minutes another waiter came over with some menus and asked whether we had been before. We said no we hadn’t, the waiter then just walked off. About 10 mins later he returned and explained the different menus and that we will need to go to the till to place our order quoting table number 9. Once we made our order after about 20 mins our starter arrived which was really good. Then the plates were collected and our mains arrived. Not at any point did the waiter give us eye contact or ask us whether everything was OK. We also noticed that the waiters don’t interact with each other and it feels like a really bad atmosphere. Once we finished our main the waiter cleared our plates and still said nothing, not even asking if we wanted any dessert, which we probably would have. Like I said the food could not be faulted but a smile here and there and a little interaction would not have gone amiss. Such a shame. On exiting there was a guy who asked us whether we enjoyed our meal and we said yes we did and he was very nice and friendly. Was a bit late by then, it’s a shame the waiting staff were not similar.
Why have you stopped serving Bertinet bread? So superior to the sliced stuff you now serve. I took two friends and they were ecstatic about the quality of the cod in batter, My grilled lemon sole was the best I have eaten.
