About The Royal McGregor
The Royal McGregor Whisky Bar & Restaurant is a family run establishment located in the heart of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh’s ‘Old Town’ where we have been delighting locals and tourists for nearly 20 years. We focus on informal friendly customer service to compliment our passion for local produce, independent breweries and Whisky!
Max was great! Our group of six did the malts and scran package and we all really enjoyed it. Would highly recommend.
There was a really nice vibe. The service is really good. And the are very friendly. You should really try the Haggis tower and the sticky toffe pudding. It is really delicious.
We stopped in the day before to make reservations for 4 for Friday evening dinner. Our table was not ready, BUT a good explanation was given, and another table reserved so that we had a place to sit while the other larger group vacated the table we reserved (only a 15 minute wait). Our wait staff was excellent. The night before we had a gin flight (our first) and it was EXCELLENT, the presentation and taste, along with the explanation by our bartender. And even though we did not have the same bartender as the night before, I noticed him explaining a "flight" to another group with the same knowledge. He did stop by our table to inquire if everything is all right and we asked him about our Whiskey flight. Again, very knowledgeable. Personality was great. We may never make it back to Edinburgh again, but I would highly recommend this quaint little Scottish pub!
Good pie and burger. Dessert was average. Not overly busy, lacked a bit of a buzz
Really nice service and friendly atmosphere! Great haggis and good beer on tap
Worst 2 hours spent in Edinburgh We reserved a table online but a very large noisy stag do was in, and we were placed right next to them and couldn’t even hear ourselves talk for the first hour. The stag do had harry potter broomsticks and kept dropping them on our feet and leaning over us. Not totally the bars fault, but during that time we ordered food and drinks. Food was average, we’ve had better. I ordered gin and the glass was cracked half way down. Also the gin was meant to come with a bottle of tonic water which the male waiter totally forgot and left on the bar with the ice for a while until the only nice barmaid told him to bring it to me. The bar is quite small but very noisy and we were sat right next to the kitchen area so were disturbed by numerous food orders coming out and then a woman washing and drying what sounded like every piece of cutlery very noisily right next to us for 20 minutes. So much for peace and quiet or even a normal conversation over dinner. The end was awful as the waiter came over after we had paid by card with his colleague and said we had been undercharged by quite a lot! So we had to repay again which I was not happy with and the waiter said that was the only card payment all night.... which I just don’t believe. It was really disappointing and I’m very upset. I would never bother to go back here again. I would not recommend this place at all. Please go somewhere else, somewhere nice!!
The service was great! However, unfortunately the main course wasn't so great. A overcooked and cold steak, the prawns haven't been cleaned properly. The whisky's they'd serve were having a good price/quality range.
Friendly staff. Cosy accommodation. Pleasant experience
Really friendly staff, food was lovely, there was 6 in our group all really enjoyed our meals and drinks service was first-class didn't feel rushed most enjoyable. Will definitely be back.
Once again cannot fault The Royal McGregor. Great food and service. The staff are extra helpful and friendly. This is why we return time and time again. Looking forward to the next time.
Very friendly and clearly happy staff! Felt most welcome and really enjoyed our Burns Night Supper.
Beautiful food, lots of traditional Scottish items on the menu, quick service, polite staff and great value!
We come here every time we visit Edinburgh. The food is always delicious and we love the wee taster! I love the addition of the choice or lager or beer.
Brought a party of 14 for a late Sunday breakfast. Everyone enjoyed it. Great food and good value.
Excellent did and staff
Wonderful service, excellent food. Made our boxing Day evening very special.
Had a wonderful dinner. It was truly a great place to introduce my family to the wonders of haggis and Scottish whisky. We loved it!
Fabulous meal in lovely cosy surroundings. Good food at reasonable prices.
This return visit was worth the travel through from Glasgow. Restored our faith in customer service and the service in the restaurant could not be faulted and the food was second to none. A big thank you to Royal McGregor and the staff for a fabulous visit and for going that extra mile - just the way we remember it from past visits. It's our number 1 destination when visiting Edinburgh.
Fabulous little pub we visit here every time we visit Edinburgh. The staff are brilliant and the food is gorgeous, always served piping hot. The prices are the same as other pubs that you can eat in. We will be back as soon as we get the time to visit Edinburgh again.
I booked the Royal McGregor for a works' Christmas lunch. There were 18 of us on the day and I had to alter the number a couple of times after the initial deposit was paid but this was no problem at all. The food was tasty and the portion sizes were large! the service was fantastic - the staff were very attentive and seemed happy to help. There was a vegan and a few vegetarians in our group and all were catered for - no problems. I was able to confirm our orders before we turned up which helped. The restaurant is small but large enough for us. We had the whole of the seating section at the rear which was perfect. Everybody had a great time and enjoyed the meal. It wasn't expensive either. Absolutely value for money. I would definitely consider returning. In fact, this will probably be our first choice for next year's Christmas meal! Thank you to the staff!
A Christmas Day out with friends from Perth and we had a lovely overall experience at the royal MacGregor.
