Great place to start the evening a few cheeky cocktails in a funky setting
We have been many times over the years for meals and at first we really enjoyed the visits and the food was amazing. After a while a new chef was taken on and the food went Downhill a bit. The atmosphere upstairs was also bad as it’s so echoey and if you have a couple of groups there you can’t hear yourself speak. This time we visited during lockdown. On walking in the door staff was swearing his head off about something. The reception staff said I didn’t have a booking even though I pointed it out on the screen. We were shown to a table but didn’t feel there was sufficient space between tables. We ordered bread and nibbles to start - what we got was a stale slice of bread and butter and a couple of slider buns cut in half which was really disappointing. The main meal however was delicious, I had cod which was really tasty and my wife had steak which she enjoyed and was cooked well. Couldn’t fault the main. We also had dessert and that wasn’t good, as if the chocolate tart pastry hadn’t been cooked properly and was bland with a Spoon of ice cream. Bill came to £200 for four of us for a three course meal and a drink each. Not sure we would go back after this experience.
Another lovely meal. Great attentive service. Will be returning again
Good service & friendly
The food was fine.....The service was totally unacceptable. We had to keep asking to be served. we had 3 different people serving us. We waited and waited to have our plates taken away from us....Eventually we moved our plates ourselves to another empty table. Then we got the bill....only to find that service charge had already been added. We felt so embarrassed that we paid and left. Nobody said thank you or goodbye. We will definitely not be back.
If you receive good food the prices can be justified. I don't call £7.50 for 8 prawns in a prawn cocktail acceptable or £16.00 for 2 of the smallest pieces of beef I've ever seen, 1 carrot, 3 very small roast potatoes acceptable. Also my partners pork was RAW near the bone! The reason I did not complain as the staff were very young, looked stressed, were concentrating on serving drinks out side and were hard to get when condiments were requested and turned up near the end of the meal! I hope you respond with some satisfactory explanations as this was a very, very unpleasant dinning experience.
We were just in for a drink but as always the staff were really friendly and helpful
The quality of cocktails was awful flat and bland Long Island ice tea, and Mojito’s were all ice, and the service very slow 1/2 hour wait for our drinks, such a shame as this was always my go to place. We left after one drink and went to Seven around the corner, this was good move as the cocktails there Were superb.
We had a great meal in this friendly, happy bar. There is a great choice on the menu and the food is delicious - I can recommend the veggie scotch egg and the fresh fish was beautiful.
Great service, well thought out because of the current situation and food was great!
Lovely meal and very quick service, however Maybe slightly over priced when full price.
Our favourite place for cocktails!
Pretty good staff were extremely unattentive and even went out of the way to avoid table service despite there being no app :(
We enjoyed our evening but found it quite noisy. Staff very pleasant
Great cocktail selection
We had booked last minute the day before for Bank Holiday lunch. We arrived 20 minutes early and were shown straight to our table which was the opposite end to the bar area. We had preferred to sit in the bar area and asked our waitress if there would be any chance to be moved. She was extremely helpful and moved us into the bar area (even though they were busy). The service was very professional and food was superb as always, albeit that their Covid rules were not adhered to by some of the diners, whereby friends of the diners (who were across the restaurant) left their table to stand talking (with no social distancing at all)l and were not asked to return to their tables at any point by the staff. Don't put rules and safety measures on your website if you are not going to carry them through.
My partner and I loved our bottomless brunch. Someone was always nearby to fill our glasses & I'm already planning on coming back!! Thank you!!
Really bad experience the food must have been sitting around for ages the bread and cakes were hard to touch on outside. Ate the sandwiches was hungry left the cakes and did not eat the scones. Service was really bad would not recommend or go back again. Very upsetting it was a treat for my granddaughters 21st birthday.
Great food, drink and service.
Decided to try The Royal Hotel during Eat Out to Help Out in August as I'd heard good things but usually a little out of my price range. The cocktails were delicious but expensive, the menu very limited during the special offer. My friend choose the cheese board as her main as nothing else took her fancy and it was minute compared to another seen on a nearby table (which had grapes and additional cheese). Fish and chips very tasty though. Service was friendly and efficient with the waitress explaining a short delay with dessert. Dining early there was a note on the table showing the next sitting, far enough during the busy offer days of Mon-Weds. Overall good, let down by the tiny cheese board main course.
Booking was very smooth with a phonecall to us to confirm our booking. Staff were very friendly and attentive and the cocktails are very good. Food was what I would describe as good pub food and did not match the gourmet pictures on the website but this may be due to a reduced menu during the present times. If I was visiting Southend again I would probably eat here again.
All round lovely evening, great food and fab staff. The Royal Hotel is a beautiful setting, perfect for a work lunch through to a romantic meal for 2. Staff were attentive without being intrusive and friendly. Extensive drink menu. We had the set menu 3 courses it was amazing. Would prefer a couple more main menu choices as quite restrictive if you do not eat certain foods however what we had was delicious and superb value. Will definitely return and try their evening menu.
Had an amazing meal with my mum. The food was perfect as always
Good range of food and drink, friendly, efficient staff, plenty of good hygiene measures in place.
