About The Royal Hotel
Serving classic British and international a la carte dishes with a modern twist using fresh, seasonal, local products. With period décor, including extensive cornice work, the restaurant provides a wonderful dining experience with superb views across the Thames - including the world famous pier.
The restaurant serves lunch, afternoon tea and dinner.
Lovely Sunday lunch good food excellent staff really enjoyed our first visit so hope to come back
We really enjoyed the whole experience
Fantastic service from beginning to end. Will certainly be back again next Christmas... if not before.
This restaurant just cannot deliver consistent food quality and service. The food and the service are not up to standard. I had the worse Sunday roast and sloppy service here just a fortnight after having a good Sunday roast. Not worth the risk of booking a disappointing family Sunday lunch, or any other meal for that matter. And the prices are not cheap.Best to give it a miss until someone who understands the business takes control I think.
Fantastic - third Xmas there and just gets better every year.
There were 19 of us for our work do and we booked the Comedy Night Saturday 21st December, the food was terrible and cold but I could of got over that but the comedians were awful and not funny and it ruined the night they didn't seem to want to be there and only wanted to start on the crowd to make others laugh, had nothing else!! The staff and surroundings were excellent, I would not recommend this venue as it wasn't value for money or enjoyable.
We have been to the comedy night before and really enjoyed it. The food was brilliant and service was excellent. As we had such a good time we booked for Christmas. Service was still great but the food was not good. I ordered a Christmas dinner and there was the smallest piece of turkey you have ever seen wrapped in cabbage - very disappointing. Will now think twice about booking for 2020 as I felt it was poor value for money food wise.
Service was superb, food very good and only down starred by one due to some comments from the party (all men) that they were disappointed by the portion of turkey on the plate. Venue was lovely and good value for money. Staff were extremely helpful throughout. A great time was had by all and would highly recommend.
Had to wait a long while for the food, and wasn’t offered clean plates until we were half way through for the cakes.
This was the second year in a row I've booked a large party meal over Christmas. Last year was amazing but this year it was more expensive and on the whole the food was pretty poor. The xmas puddings were like rubber, the chocolate mousse had no flavour at all and looked like it had come out of a squirty cream can! (it was also white and we'd been advised before hand it would be plain chocolate) Several of the cheese plates had no biscuits and no fruit and the biscuits tasted very stale (one of those dishes that had probably been made up too far in advance perhaps) One person had the cod and said it was very nice, the others were just average although the veg was nice. Can't fault the service, everyone very helpful and not too attentive (if that makes sense - just the right balance) I won't repeat a third year as the consistemcy isn't there. Disappointing overall and certainly not worth the £40 a head charge. Southend has some amazing choice these days so I really hope this isn't the start of a down slide. The venue itself is gorgeous and the cocktails very imaginative (particularly love that Spicy 50!)
Service and atmosphere fantastic our waiter was delightful. Food really good although portions very small. We had a Christmas set menu so not sure if that’s still the case when ordering from the normal menu. Wouldn’t stop me going back we really enjoyed it.
Despite the staff being very friendly and as accommodating as possible, there were many errors to our order throughout the night, including nearly an hour wait for our food (we being only 3 people), wrong food/no shows of dishes and a vegan being given non-vegan food. The staff brought out complimentary dishes and were extremely apologetic, though we’d rather had money off the bill over the few complimentary dishes we couldn’t finish. hopefully it was just an off day.
I’m vegetarian and had some lovely little tasting plates amazing would definitely recommend these, and also my friend had fish & chips and she loved it. It’s the first time I’ve sat downstairs and it was very quaint looking out onto the water. Looking forward to returning soon.
this was the second time that we have booked here for our Christmas party and we will book again as everything was fantastic!, food was wonderful and the ladies serving where friendly and accommodating, DJ kept us entertained with music and games and we all let our hair down thank you so much to the venue and staff for another successful party
Superb staff, attentive and friendly, from the bouncer to the table staff. Thank you so much, was a lovely visit.
Staff were accommodating helpful and generally great
Horrible food and over priced
I drove all the way from East London and had an absolutely wonderful evening! The service was impeccable. Have already recommended this Hotel.
Was Clear on booking we had family visiting so would want a table out the way. Was sat between a hen Party of 29 and a Masonic do of 32. Being 5 of us and 3 over 60 it was dreadful. Couldn’t hear anything over the screaming girls and speeches. When complained was told there was no where else they could have sat us. Advised them they shouldn’t have taken the booking at all. Not the first time this has happened. Went to a afternoon tea for 70 people with the bride in her wedding dress and they have three tables on the edge eating roast dinner when she thought being 70 and then being aware the event there would not be anyone else in thereZ it is a shame as the food it good. Maybe management needs to be looked at?
Fabulous place awesome cheeseboard and great service love love love this place 💟
Had a fabulous evening, the food was delicious and the atmosphere was very welcoming
Brilliant service - amazing surroundings and the staff were attentive and friendly (especially 'Fabulous') Thank you to all.
When we arrived there were problems with the electrics & so we sat in the dark a couple of times why they tried to repair it. There was also no heating on so it was really cold. We waited over 2 hours to receive our main meals & when we finally got them, the vegetables were under cooked. The comedians for the comedy night weren’t particularly that funny. The evening overall was a massive let down.
Enjoyed a wonderful meal celebrating a big birthday with family. Food was lovely and we were looked after by very attentive staff. Nice atmosphere and a very enjoyable evening.
