This was a booking for my mum and dad for my mums 60th birthday and omg they loved it!!! They said it was the best afternoon tea they had been to! My mum had the royal hotel afternoon tea but like me she has a gluten and dairy intolerance and the royal hotel really looked after her and she even got warm scones which you normally do not get when you have our allergies! My dad had the gentleman’s afternoon tea which he loved and being a whisky fan as well he really enjoyed one of the desserts, think it was a whisky compote of some sort but they came away from their afternoon tea full and very happy!!!!! You even brought out a slab with happy birthday on it with candles which made my mum feel very special!!! So thank you very much for giving my mum and dad the best afternoon!!!!!
We eat a lot at the royal hotel.. We have always had a fantastic food.. Was really disappointed with our meal this Sunday batter on fish look very pale, burger bun was torn with a lump of salad on side ask for chips when returned just look like some one had dump them on there.. Was such a shame as we took our son for his birthday and was raving about how lovely it was... Staff were lovely as always but the food really let it down..
The service/staff were brilliant as always apart from the fact that we weren't offered any tea or coffee. I also think that that although the food was very nice I think that for £22 a head it could be made a little more special. I have been to you before and we had a lovely little sausage roll and tart along with the sandwiches. This time it was basically one sandwich, two scones and the sweet options. For two people £44 and especially with no tea and coffee it wasn't very good value for money. I was at the Roslin for afternoon tea the week before and their offering was better and felt more special I am afraid. Our table by the window was amazing and we could not fault the lovely room we were seated in.
Really good meal and excellent value.
Really enjoyed the comedy show and the food was delicious. The staff were so attentive and couldn't do enough for us. Really happy!
I had a private function in the ballroom which is an amazing room decorated lovely. The bar was staffed well and staff were very accommodating I would recommend. It was a particularly hot day so the room was very hot - I do think air conditioning would be an added bonus but overall a great experience
Had an amazing night the staff was great the atmosphere was awesome 👏 definitely be coming back.
A very good sunday roast with excellent service.
Lovely afternoon spent with friends. Sandwiches were lovely scones were delightful except for it having black currant jam rather than strawberry. The cake were not as nice as last time I came but overall we had a good afternoon
Wow what a venue. Quality 40th birthday.
Lovely lunch with the usual excellent service and great food!
The best venue in Southend by far I cannot thank the staff enough for making our engagement party so special. We had an amazing time. Huge thanks to Sidonie and Bunny for helping plan the event and a huge thanks to Georgia for running that bar downstairs perfectly without any trouble. Everyone was so accommodating. We cannot thank you guys enough.
This wasn’t my first time to the Royal Hotel for afternoon tea. I’ve been many times before and have always really enjoyed the experience and food served, and with the option for bottomless Prosecco at £50 ph thought it was great value for money. However my recent visit left me thoroughly disappointed by the whole experience and food served. The now £60 ph bottomless Prosecco option is no longer great value for money. On previous visits to the hotel, when being seated, I was always given a menu of what the afternoon tea for that day included and at what price. This time around we never got this. You also would have been served starters which included items such as a twist on the classic sausage roll or scotch egg. This is no longer included. Sandwich fillings were always varied and not just your typical egg mayo, cucumber fillings. You would have been served sandwiches until you could eat no more. This time around sandwich fillings were just four options - chicken mayo, egg mayo, cucumber and salmon. When we asked for more sandwiches we were told this would be at an additional cost. Previously scones and a wide selection of cakes would be served to the point that you required a box to take the leftovers home. This time around it was two small scones and barely enough jam and clotted cream to cover them along with 3 bite size cakes of no description each. At no time during our seating were we offered tea or coffee. It was only served when we asked for it and even then the selection of teas was very basic and no longer the wide variety I had seen before. Previously the Prosecco would always be in an ice cooler at the end of your table which when empty would be immediately replaced with another bottle. This time around our glasses were topped up when still half full and the bottle was never left at our table. Although we would never have been able to drink the 2 bottles per head allocation, I question this time around due to how it was served to us whether we drank more than half a bottle each during our 2 hour sitting. This time around, on receiving the bill, I was shocked to see the £60 ph price as the whole experience and food served was not even close to i had seen or had before. On speaking to the waitress about the cost and then the manager, we were told that we should have checked the prices on the website and that what we were served and experienced this time around was how it was these days. As I had been to the Royal Hotel many times before, it never occurred to me that I should check the price or what the afternoon tea now consisted of. On reflection the manager was so robotic in his response, I suspect he had hear heard all many times before. Our experience also probably explains why on a weekend afternoon the restaurant was practically empty. My latest experience of the Royal Hotel left me disappointed beyond belief. It is safe to say that the table of 6 that I was dining with won’t be returning anytime in the future and we certainly won’t be recommending it to our friends and family.
Lovely, relaxing cream tea in the beautiful ballroom restaurant. Attentive staff & just a real treat!
We had afternoon tea for two, the service was excellent and staff serving us could not be faulted. Our table for two was upstairs on the balcony with amazing views, but just a little cramped. The afternoon tea had great little cakes and lovely scones and generous cream. However, more jam would have been appreciated, the sandwiches were very sparse (4 fingers each, made from two slices of bread, egg and salmon fillings were great, but the others weren’t) To make this “tea” slightly better value a few more sandwiches or some other savoury such as mini quiches or savour mini muffins need to be included. Our afternoon was sleeping ghtly marred by the complaints of a 40th Birthday Party of 5 lovely ladies who each paid £60 for bottomless Prosecco afternoon tea, they had exactly the same amount of food as us, but drinking alcohol sensibly asked for a few more finger sandwiches, and were told they needed to pay extra for these ! Understandly they were very upset and complained, they weren’t loud, abusive or drunk, but neither were their complaints properly addressed. Royal Hotel, if you truly care about your customers you need to address this as their request wasn’t unreasonable when paying £60 a head ! Whilst we were there we also saw the Sunday roast being served, which looked and smelled amazing and the surroundings and toilets were all spotlessly clean. Please don’t automatically add a service charge to your bill, we would have left a tip as service excellent for us, but not all people realise you can deduct the service charge, by law, if you’re not happy.
Far too hot in the ballroom. It puts me off going again as it was unbearable.
We had a nice time at the Comedy club , but did leave at the interval as we had seen the first act and he did the same routine as he did at the Lee Hurst show , where we were sitting the room did smell off cooking oil which my partner didn't like . The service was quick well done to the staff.
I couldn’t of been happier with the service it was my birthday and they made it extra special Thankyou you all so much
Great night. Really set up good.
We had a lovely time. I feel the vegetarian gentleman’s afternoon tea although delicious should not have been priced at the same cost as the “normal” afternoon tea.
Fantastic Comedy Club night!
We had a fantastic evening. The staff were friendly and attentive. The entertainment was first class and the setting was beautiful. Highly recommended.
For the type of venue and standard you present, the party felt the menu was incredibly under par. The burger and pork, although tasting nice, were nothing special and certainly nothing that couldn’t easily be cooked at home. Pregnant prawns were served, clearly not checked by kitchen staff and although you can eat them, it’s not a pleasant experience to de prawn them. The lack of vegetarian option was disappointing, particularly when an enquires was made as to a different option. Only to be told there wasn’t one (so if you don’t eat asparagus, then you’re out of luck!). I appreciate it was a set menu, but we were disappointed to realise this meant the standard wasn’t worth paying out for. Such a shame.
The only problem I could see is the fact that we were charged £30 for a plate of sandwiches. There could have been more savoury items rather than the vast amount of sweet things. The staff were brilliant and very friendly and couln't do too much for us.
A lovely Afternoon Tea with my friends. Plenty of fresh pots of tea. Please to be asked dietary requirements regarding sandwiches. Impressed to have a courtesy call a few days before we were due, to confirm my booking.
