About Pen & Cob
The Bedford Swan's riverside British Brasserie open all day for brunch, lunch or dinner as well as cocktails, coffee and much more!
On arrival after booking for 5 people we were shown to a table of 4.... I mentioned this to the lady and she just walked away. We remained standing and then she came back with extra cutlery to add to the table but I refused as it would have been crowded and should have been set up already on a larger table for the amount of people I booked for. This was done in plenty of time online so they should have been aware. Again she walked away.. As we remained standing a senior member of staff appeared and just moved the table next to us over. not sure why the first lady couldn't do this instead of just ignoring the situation. We then had to wait ages for someone to come to take our drinks order, but they constantly stood by their desk looking down the room!! Eventually we were served and the service from then on was perfect and the food was very good. Think this needs to be addressed as it wasn't a good start to my husbands birthday meal.. We regularly drink in your new bar and thought it would be nice to have food on this occasion and brought along friends to join us.
Lovely staff, lovely food, lovely restaurant. Shame about the toilets in the Swan, they need a serious refurb, actually the hotel lets the restaurant down, it is so gloomy.
Absolutely fantastic customer service , food & atmosphere. My daughter had her graduation and the fizz Friday offer was an amazing touch which was excellent value. Friendly staff & fantastic food. Will definitely be returning soon .
We had a lovely meal at Pen and Cob yesterday lunchtime. The food was nicely presented and very tasty. As we were given the meal and sweet for £15.00 offer, it was great value for money. Service was excellent with friendly, attentive staff. I would recommend Pen and Cob to anyone. A pleasant way to enjoy an unhurried meal. We will be back. :-)
Three out of four of us had not been here before so we’re sceptical. However we cannot fault the ambience, service, and the food was simply amazing. To cap it all the price was much more reasonable than we were expecting. We will be back!
Great food, superb cocktails, and happy and attentive staff team (even in the face of other customers being rude to them for no reason they remained positive)
Parking at the swan is a nightmare, this would deter me from going back. Every pay machine wouldn’t accept coins, which meant a 1800 reservation turned into an 1845 reservation. The food and service was very good, but I think the swan needs to do something regarding the parking for patrons as it wasn’t clear about the exact cost. Why if I’m eating at the premise do I have to pay for parking inside the premises. I did go inside to enquire about the parking but there was only one receptionist and the front desk was very busy, so I left and parked further up the embankment where it was free after 1800, then walked back down to the swan!
Enjoyable lunch staff polite
Service abit slow. Appreciate food freshly prepared but had to chase to get pugging menu and then order. However enjoyed and will return
Lovely food and drink, service was a little slow on drinks but the food came out nice and hot and tasted delicious!
We booked for my parents riding anniversary. I mentioned this at the time of booking. We couldn’t have been better looked after by fabulous staff and management. We were made to feel so welcome and the food was fabulous. We all loved sitting outside on the terrace!! This has become our ‘go to’ place, we’ve been more then a few times and never had a bad experience- in fact it’s always been exemplary and I can’t speak highly enough of the staff. Thank you for making the day special!!
Pleasantly suprised - should have happened years ago. Food was very good and well priced. I hope the quality continues and develops. Eight years ago I ordered the same salad in the bar and it was atrocious - yesterday that was all put to rights.
Well greeted and seated to our booked table. Or order taken promptly and delivered within general expectation. Starters were considered basic and mains just fine. Only real disappointment was service. After our mains the young waitress clearing the table asked if we would like any desserts to which we declined however told her we would like to order drinks - she was going to come back and take the order. We could see wandering aimlessly around the restaurant and after ten minutes it was clear she wasn't coming back to us. We had to then go to another counter to ask for the bill. We left and had our cocktails at a bar around the corner. thank you :)
A lovely evening
Unclear outside where each menu is. Shade will need to be provided if the outside space can be used more effectively. Perhaps a designated smoking area would be appreciated.
The thing that spoilt our meal was the smell of cigarette smoke that wafted in from the outside area. I don’t like to eat with this smell if I’m eating indoors and it’s non smoking. The food was delicious. Not much on the starter menu though. Main was tasty and well presented. Flexible with making changes to dish.
Breakfast Tea was shocking and service on the day wasn’t far behind! A shame as was a let down to prior visits for afternoon tea were excellent!
Very good all round lovely decor
Very slow service
Even though it said it was happy hour in the bar outside it wasn't given because the till outside wouldn't allow it. It felt a lot like false advertising as we were there between 5pm till 6pm. Disappointing as the food and drinks were lovely.
Shame you ran out of a few things, but otherwise nice decor and food was gorgeous
We thought the restaurant was beautiful. We were sat in the row of tables between the entrance and bar. There was a wedding party and lots of people drinking because of the hot weather, which we felt took away from the restaurant atmosphere because it was quite busy with people walking back and forth. I think in the winter it would feel calmer and have a nicer atmosphere. The food was enjoyed by all of us but we were particularly happy with the service from Mike. We had questions about the menu and he was happy to get the answers for us. He was attentive and really helpful, a great server and we all commented on that. We will return and have recommended it to others.
Absolutely shocking customer service. Arrived, said we were there for afternoon tea and a women pointed and said it’s up there then carried on talking to another worker. I then said excuse me, where’s up there. She eventually took us to the afternoon tea area and was very dismissive. We ordered our tea and it came and was told ‘well I dunno where you want me to put it’ and she just stood there until we had made some space on the table close to her. Very poor service. Wouldn’t recommend.
Yet again fantastic Sunday lunch.. see you next week
Dinner was very good. Unfortunately breakfast wasn’t so good. We were not offered menus or tea and coffee. We saw Guests waiting a long time for hot buffet food.
