About The Restaurant at The Woodpecker
Contemporary, Informal City Style dining in the historic town of Lanark.
We think you’ll be delighted by our spectacular food and surprised by how much of it we are able to source from the surrounding area, allowing us to have an ever changing menu of seasonal produce at sensible prices.
Led by head chef Ian Kerr our team have cooked for a host of famous diners including Janet Jackson, Mick Jagger and Oasis and worked across the globe with the likes of Heston Blumenthal and Marco Pierre White, yet you’ll find a warm, friendly and informal atmosphere with an emphasis on you having a great time enjoying fantastic food (and wine of course).
We look forward to welcoming you to The Restaurant at The Woodpecker.
Great to have another restaurant in Lanark, fab atmosphere, great menu, very impressed.
Will definitely return fantastic 👍
Delicious meal & fantastic service from very friendly, attentive staff x
Superb! I take everything back from my previous review. Ali invited us back to show us our last visit was not typical and he was right. Both the service and food were terrific. The addition of the 2 or 3 course lunch menu is a great idea and great value. We will definitely be back. Thank you Ali and the Woodpecker team!
Very warm welcome, hung our coats for us both , got our drinks straight away then gave us plenty of time to choose from menu, starters were to die for , and mains were very well presented on plates and tasted amazing, raspberry bread n butter pudding was outstanding! Relaxing music, staff very attentive didn’t feel rushed at any point, enjoyed it so much we’ve booked for next week , well done to all staff keep up the fantastic work 🥂. Just what Lanark has been needing 😊
My friend and I had lunch in the newly refurbished restaurant. AMAZING!! The mushroom starter was out of this world and the chicken and ox cheek mains were fantastic too. We will definitely be back and have already recommended to friends.
First off I will start by saying that we visited on Mothers Day when there was only a special set menu available, so we will come back when the a la carte menu is available, but there were a few things that need to be ironed out first. Although the menu at first glance looks expensive (think city prices, rather than town prices), the food was clearly very good quality and very tasty. Clearly a lot of skill in the kitchen. We all enjoyed our starters and main courses, although we couldn't finish the portions of Roast Beef or Lamb - they were just so big! Service was a bit hit or miss. Staff were very attentive (to the point where we were asked by three different staff members at each course if everything was alright). Like a previous reviewer has commented, we felt like waiting staff were constantly on edge and being watched by their managers, so wasn't as relaxed as it could have been. We had to ask for a few more minutes before ordering, as we were asked for our orders very quickly. And again when we finished our main courses - the dessert menu was brought immediately, and almost straight away we were asked for our order. I think this is just down to staff training, and can be easily remedied. A couple of things were more disappointing though - we had to ask twice for the bottle of wine we ordered (which resulted in more and more staff coming over to apologise - just bring the wine, don't apologise three times!) After feeling rushed into our dessert order, we then had to wait over 25 minutes for our desserts to arrive, and when they did they were a bit of a disappointment. (Having said that we were offered a glass of Port to have with our cheese, which we declined and none of us enjoy Port). The cheese boards were served with no explanation of what the three small bits of cheese were. I think if I had been paying the a la carte price of £8.50 I would have complained. The other dessert ordered was peaches poached in dark rum. When these arrived, they were hard, sour and more surprisingly, they were nectarines and NOT peaches! I understand restaurants run out of ingredients, but please advise customers of this and don't assume they won't know the difference. As I said at the beginning, we will come back, and we will give the restaurant another chance. Perhaps in a few months though once they have had a chance to sort out some niggles.
Visited on Mother’s Day so there was a special menu. We all had different starters and all were delicious and beautifully presented. We had roasts for mains and the beef especially was amazing! Desserts fantastic. Will definitely be back - if only to experience the beef again! Great to see a high end eatery in Lanark.
Beautiful Mother’s Day meal, attentive staff, lovely decoration and excellent food. We would definitely recommend and look forward to returning soon.
First class service and lovely meal, would like to see a few traditional dishes on the menu.
I have been to the Woodpecker twice now since it reopened. The food has been of an amazingly high standard and wine selection excellent. The hake was delicious. I went with a group of 7 male friends as a birthday celebration and then with my partner. Both occasions I have really enjoyed the atmosphere , food and the staff are super friendly and helpful. The owners are always available and mingle and interact with the customers which is a great touch. Lanark really needs a restaurant like this. I will definitely be back.
Beautiful lunch, in beautiful pristine surroundings. Service was excellent too. Thank you, we shall be back 😁
Enjoyed a fabulous meal , we were well attended to by staff very relaxing atmosphere with the background music, will definitely recommend to everyone to give it a try ps refurbishment looks fantastic done to a high standard, will be back next week
This was one of the best dining experiences we’ve had. The food was amazing. We enjoyed a delightful gin and tonic cured salmon and a crispy caramelised pork belly as starters. Both delightful. Our mains were fillet steak and chicken breast. Both were cooked to perfection and simply melted in the mouth. We shared an ice cream sorbet for dessert. Again, simply sublime. The service from the staff was warm, welcoming and knowledgeable. The restaurant professional, polished but unstuffy. Lanark is so lucky to have such a gem of a restaurant, We were so impressed that we booked again before we left!
The second time we have been for dinner and look forward to the next time.
Fabulous yet again thanks to all
Everything was superb, although the poor we waitresses were given a baptism of fire. However I am confident their expertise will improve with experience. I feel this restaurant is what discerning diners in Lanark have been waiting on. I hope the business is a great success.
Overall made very welcome and enjoyed food. A few teething issues for you to sort out. Mackerel starter was a bit on the small side but was tasty. We ordered a second round of drinks from the young waitress but they never came and we had to redo our order and by the time our drinks came I had finished my main course. When clearing our table the waitress asked if we wanted to see the sweet menu and again it failed to appear. When the peaches arrived we had no cutlery and then only a spoon arrived which was not adequate for eating halve peaches. New restaurant and staff need more training but also supervision required as no one noticed us looking for assistance and Barman never looked in our direction while the rest were either serving or chatting with customers, he at the time we required our drinks appeared to be doing nothing but he has a good viewpoint to see what all customers are doing and could bring that to your attention. Overall ok but not yet the standard you claim or aspire to on you website. Regards Bob Arnott
Dear Mr Arnott – I am very sorry that your experience with us on Saturday night did not live up to your expectations and would very much like to make amends. This past weekend was extremely challenging for everyone, the weather as you know was dreadful all week and to be honest it was a big effort to even open at all. Most of our staff live in outlying areas and while we got as many as we could in by 4x4 we had nowhere near a full compliment. That said the experience you describe is certainly not the experience that we want our guests to have, ever. We strive to give each and every guest a personal experience that is above and beyond expectations. We also work hard to be part of the local community, sourcing most of our ingredients locally and indeed we used the aforementioned 4x4’s and some of our team to deliver hot soup to anyone housebound by the weather over the weekend too. That is very much our ethos and we are genuinely distressed that we let you down on this occasion. I would like to invite you and your guests back as our guests on a date of your choosing for a meal on us, so that you can enjoy the first class service you deserve. I will call you with my personal number and look forward to welcoming you back sometime soon. Yours Ali
Was so wanting our lunch to be good as very local to us and refurbishment looks excellent. Salmon starter - tiny portion and not great piece of fish Steaks had been flavoured (garlic?), which wasted taste Desserts too chilled and carrot cake dry and too small a piece Service poor. Nice welcome and staff pleasant, but went very long wait between courses. Not attentive despite not being busy (would have ordered more drinks) and waitress not very knowledgeable eg We ordered sides that were unnecessary as steaks came with chips. She did try, but maybe lack of training? Disappointed no one came to say goodbye and get feedback - we ended up getting our own coats. Overall not good value and trying too hard. A bit pretentious basically.
Dear Mrs McArdle – I am very sorry that your visit on Saturday was not as you’d hoped. Thank you for your kind words about our refurbishment but I am extremely sorry that you were let down by the overall experience. This weekend was incredibly challenging for everyone, it was a huge effort even to open at all due to the severe weather conditions. Most of our suppliers couldn’t deliver and most of our staff live in outlying areas and were snowed in. We did manage to get to our main suppliers ourselves using 4x4’s and managed to get some staff to and from work but by no means our full rota. That meant that some of the staff on Sunday were relatively new to us and had not gone through our full staff training process. I am very upset that we let you down on this occasion and would like to invite you and your guests back as our guests on a date of your choosing for a meal on us and so you can enjoy the first class service you deserve. I will call you with my personal number and look forward to welcoming you back sometime soon. Yours Ali
Great Service .. The Steak was to Die for .. definitely be back !!!!! The staff were very attentive 😀
A fabulous experience...staff are exceptional and the food is amazing. Added to the list of my favourite places to be. Thank you to all.
Attentive friendly service and excellent food. Sophisticated atmosphere in well upgraded restaurant.
Personal preference, food needs more seasoning. Add a pasta dish as an option. Felt a little rushed but think that was keenness if staff. However, a better class place that Lanark needs. Well done. We will be back (already booked).
Enjoyed my meal and the atmosphere was great. Service was excellent. Food was good but think there are a few elements that the kitchen need to improve on.
Made to feel very welcome , nice decor and the food was fantastic .
