About The Rectory Hotel
The Rectory Hotel's restaurant serves British food with a modern touch, simplicity which over delivers.
The great chef helps but the whole team pulled together to make for a special evening.
Since you have asked us to comment, we were extremely disappointed by our experience with you. It was a cold, dark and windy night and we could find no decent signage to guide us to your door. Even the door itself was not clear for first-timers like ourselves. It was like entering Bleak House and the greeting was, "Hiya, you OK?" Not "Good evening" or any other suitable pleasantries. We were taken to the conservatory, where we were seated on either side of a very large table that made conversation difficult without involving the whole room. A very, very young female person brought us the menus and greeted us in much the same way as the person in the bleak entrance hall. The menu is very disappointing, to say the least, but we ordered a chateaubriand, which arrived draped in a blanket of watercress. We also ordered a side of fries and were rewarded with two, not one (we paid for both). The heated plates were placed on the table a good five minutes before the steak arrived and so were just about cold anyway before we even started. As a beverage, we ordered large (not on the menu) glasses of the Quando Sauvignon Blanc, for which we were shocked to be charged the best part of £12 each! We can buy this wine for around £8 a bottle, so the mark-up is ridiculous... All in all, we decided not to order a dessert (we weren't offered coffee) and slunk away to lick our wounds after being charged £91+ for what was basically steak, chips and a glass of wine!! Just as an aside, the table next to us asked for some tomato sauce and your staff plonked a bottle of Heinz ketchup on the table - where are your standards? No one asked about our meal at any stage. There was a man in a check shirt bobbing about the place, but we weren't sure if he was in charge or just assisting. All in all, a not-to-be-repeated experience for us. And with your fresh refurbishment, we had so been looking forward to dining with you as we are locals and were hoping to find a fine-dining venue. Ah well...
The Rectory is most certainly worth visiting, very good menu with excellent food and service all complimented with superb surroundings and decor that made a lovely atmosphere. Ian
1.From the arrival at reception staff were welcoming, friendly and obliging. 2. Given poor mobile network coverage, a landline telephone in the room would be highly reccommended. 3.on chilly evenings dinner in dining room would be preferable to the glasshouse. 4.Room would benefit from more comfortable chair. In summary a most enjoyable visit in delightful surroundings.
Loved the newly refurbished Rectory!! Only marked down 1 point on atmosphere as was quiet but it was a Sunday night and everywhere is quiet then. Everything else was excellent. Will definitely come back on a Friday or Saturday.
Vicky and Nicky were extremely helpful and attentive.
An excellent meal with great service on Thursday night. The refurbishment is super and we love the new conservatory dining area. Lovely bar and sitting room for drinks and coffees too. Good wine list - enjoyed the Plantagenet Chardonnay and Oregon Pinot noir. An excellent night out.
The food was wonderful and service excellent - lovely weekend!
Beautiful dining room
We came for supper, the glass house was very dark it was hard to see what I was eating. Also not a huge amount of staff so had to wait our turn to be seen to. The food was lovely just a shame about the rest really.
Superb hotel and restaurant.
Lovely setting/gardens ... looks great after the recent refurb and really friendly staff ... well worth a visit!
We enjoyed our stay with you (except I became ill in the night). I would comment that if you have a jacket or dress to hang on a hanger, there is nowhere to do this. I think this would be particularly difficult if you had guests preparing for a wedding or posh event. All we had was 4 Shaker style pegs which you could fit a hanger on, but no hanger bar.
Fabulous meal, great staff and wonderful cocktails. We will be back!!
We very much enjoyed our visit. You will see us again.
Lovely atmosphere in the orangery, absolutely delicious food beautifully presented and a really reasonable price too
It was our 5th time staying here, 1st one after the refurb and safe to say it's even better!! The bar is a great addition and the whole atmosphere is relaxed and the perfect place for a break away from it all. See you again soon!
Food was really lovely, a good choice and beautifully presented. Service team are very friendly and helpful but in some areas it's clear that they are quite new but I'm sure after a few more months, minor teething issues will be ironed out. The new orangery is lovely. Overall a gorgeous venue.
We had to ask to be seated, left waiting for both starters and mains and had to chase both up. Very inattentive staff, apart from one guy (who said he was only there short term) Food was ok. Service massive let down. Sounded like a good atmosphere in conservatory but we felt like the poor relations in the room next door and forgotten about. Very disappointed
Loved our stay. The hotel, the room, the gardens and the church next door are all truly beautiful. What a wonderful experience! Thank you so much. Andy and Angie Ford
A superb refurbishment, stylish inside and out. The food was equally stylish and delicious however staff, while very friendly seemed a little inexperienced both around the menu and with service in general but this didn't detract from our enjoyment and we are sure this is just teething troubles and fully intend to return soon.
A great weekend.
We had a fabulous time on Saturday 5th celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary. Canapés and fizz followed by a four course dinner for 12 could not have been better. The whole team, from the initial organisation right through to the main event, delivered an impeccable service to the best standards. Management and staff in the restaurant and at at the bar were knowledgeable, attentive, friendly and helpful; they listened and adapted when we made small alterations to our plans, e.g. slight timing changes, and individually and as a team contributed entirely to the success and enjoyment of everyone there. The slightest of issues - a tiny mix up on a starter that had been ordered as a main course - was addressed immediately and handled with no fuss so as to be barely noticeable. The quality, quantity and presentation of food was superb, as were the wines we selected from The Rectory. The willingness to make some small meal adjustments / alternatives, in particular for a younger guest, were extremely appreciated, both at the evening meal and for breakfast. Overall...five stars and 100% recommend. Thank you again to everyone involved! Jon
An excellent lunch in beautiful surroundings. First class service.
Excellent food, great menu. Service was quite slow for us on the night.
