About The Rattle Owl
The Rattle Owl is an independent 42 seat casual dining restaurant housed in a restored listed building. With a commitment to exceptional food, using the best local produce and an amazing selection of wine together matched perfectly with great service and atmosphere.
We also have beautiful and unique historic upstairs room for private dining and for business meetings. Please email for further details.
ResDiary allows you to book directly into our Reservations System for tables of up to 4 people.
For bookings of 5 or more people please send us an email: [email protected] or call us 01904 658 658.
Due to a number of large booking no shows, for bookings of 5 or more we now ask for a £10pp deposit. Ts&Cs on refunds apply if you cancel with prior notice.
Please inform us of any dietary requirements in advance. We can accommodate and adapt but it is much easier if we know beforehand rather than last minute on a busy Saturday night service.
We booked as a "Large" group of 14 for a surprise lunch 30th Birthday Party. The communication and help provided by Rattle Owl were excellent from start to finish. The food was incredible, the restaurant atmosphere and rooms made available to us were impeccable and really made the event for us.
Food was absolutely delicious, service from staff was very friendly, really liked the added touch of dishes being explained. Had a fabulous meal and will definitely recommend
Best meal we have had in York. Home cooking at a great price. The staff were lovely, and all of the food we had was top notch.
Service very good to start but very slow to pay bill
Delicious meal - slightly patchy service for the price point.
Delicious Sunday lunch!
At first glance the menu looks limited. However, as everything is freshly prepared and beautifully presented, to keep the food to an excellent standard fewer dishes are important. Little touches like the amuse bouche make dining here well worth while.
Another lovely meal at The Rattle Owl - food delicious and staff charming.
Excellent food and lovely private rooms upstairs. Very attentive service
This was excellent. Hard to fault - so I'll try to spot some of the things that set it apart. 1. They protect the kitchen. Piling too much demand on a kitchen all at once is a recipe for poor quality and long waits. By limiting the tables for certain times and holing them waiting, rather than squeezing in a second service, it allows the kitchen to deliver great food. 2. The service is hyper-observant but unobtrusive. No endless hoping to catch an eye. No need to catch it - they've seen that you need more water/want an extra fork to sample your partner's food/it's time for the bill. They only ask "How is...?" once... and they listen to the answer. 3. The management is on the floor. The owner was serving tables...and listening to feedback. 4. They share the tronc fairly...and the staff feel it's fair. Oh, and did I mention that the food is magic? The only fault I can find is that one of the pictures is hugh upside down and not level.
Great atmosphere and catered to my allergy needs with no issues. Staff were really friendly and approachable
Delightful place to spend an evening. Food, service, staff and ambience all 5 stars.
Somewhat disappointed by the food. The Mille Fuille dessert was very heavy. Lovely decor and ambience so a shame the food didn’t match up.
A really excellent meal in a lovely setting. A slight hiccup with service but went out their way to rectify.
We had a lovely anniversary meal at the Rattle Owl, the staff were friendly and attentive. The food was delicious, would definitely recommend.
Fantastic meal and service.
Fabulous dinning experience. Excellent food, service and ambiance. We will definitely be eating at The Rattle Owl again.
Food excellent . Felt place missed somebody greeting customers .. only 2 waitresses who did well but we had to ask them things , to order , to get more drink , to have the bill etc.. shouldn’t have to do this in a restaurant with such lovely food really .
Really good place for fine dining.
Both my guests and I really enjoyed the food. The menu been relatively short offered us enough choice, whilst each dish was well conceived, prepared and presented. Particularly enjoyed the mallard duck, service was prompt friendly and not intrusive. Looking forwards to returning soon.
Amazing food and lovely staff!
Our first time at this wonderful restaurant. Small menu and amazing food because of it. Lovely staff rushing around keeping everyone happy. For the money we paid I can not fault it. One of the best meals we have had in some time.
Our experience at The Rattle Owl was fabulous. It started with friendly service and an inviting atmosphere. The menu is short which is by no means a negative. We started with complimentary amuse bouche and bread. For starters we chose Beetroot smoked salmon and rabbit terrine (we shared both dishes). The flavours were incredible and especially the rabbit terrine was a winner. For our main we chose the two fish dishes - cod and bream - which were brimming with flavour. We had two sides which we didn’t really need as there was enough food, but the hasselback potatoes and cabbage were delicious and I’d have them as a snack on their own. We had a German white wine (Sander) which was interesting, tasty and refreshing - a great accompaniment to the menu. To finish we shared the millefeuille, one of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted!! It was not too sweet, the raspberries fresh and juicy and the millefeuille buttery and flakey. Unfortunately you won’t be able to have it for much longer as the chef told us that they will be replacing it on the menu soon. He came to our table and had a little chat with us at the end. Value for money was excellent. We paid £55pp including tip. I would HIGHLY recommend this restaurant not just for special occasions but just for a good meal out.
First visit and we loved it from start to finish. If we ever come back to York again we will definitely pay a visit.
very much enjoyed our meal. The cocktails were good. The menu really hits the mark with "less is more" - bit of a cliché but a limited menu says you are not stocking vast amounts of frozen food, and still good choices. Our mains were delicious and the ingredients all came through to taste. The wine was fine - we passed on your Nero d'Avola as we have just returned from Sicily where we buy it at €1.80 a litre!!!! The service was very good. The only blot was that we ordered two Mille Feuille desserts which were late but we were given complimentary dessert wine. However, what was served was not Mille Feuille but more like shortbread which might explain the delay and which was a bit stodgy. So would we recommend? Yes. Will we return? Yes, but you need to front up if you are changing a dish.
