About The Rattle Owl
The Rattle Owl is an independent 42 seat casual dining restaurant housed in a restored listed building. With a commitment to exceptional food, using the best local produce and an amazing selection of wine together matched perfectly with great service and atmosphere.
We also have beautiful and unique historic upstairs room for private dining and for business meetings. Please email for further details.
ResDiary allows you to book directly into our Reservations System for tables of up to 4 people.
For bookings of 5 or more people please send us an email: [email protected] or call us 01904 658 658.
Due to a number of large booking no shows, for bookings of 5 or more we now ask for a £10pp deposit. Ts&Cs on refunds apply if you cancel with prior notice.
Please inform us of any dietary requirements in advance. We can accommodate and adapt but it is much easier if we know beforehand rather than last minute on a busy Saturday night service.
Always a fabulous meal! Great service and atmosphere.
We had a wonderful pre New Year dinner at The Rattle Owl - booked before we realised that it would be the final service ahead of the current lockdown 😞 Service was delightful and friendly - even putting up with us asking to move tables! Our choice of fizz was n/a but they quickly substituted it with another- more expensive- offering. Food was just delicious - onion velouté followed by lamb cooked to perfection for me. All the other diners had equally lovely looking plates. It was quite sad that it was closing its doors - again - but we were very happy to be there. And we will be again very soon, I hope 🤞
Lovely food, staff very friendly....have been before and will definitely go again
Would definitely recommend, great stylisation and delicious food
We enjoyed our meal however we felt it was rather pricey for what we got. This opinion has come from comparing your restaurant to other similar eating establishments within York. The flavours in the beef dish were lovely but we were disappointed as our beef was very chewy. Beef of this standard should fall apart in your mouth. I would recommend other restaurants to friends before recommending The Rattle Owl but if someone asked my opinion on your restaurant, I would say the atmosphere is lovely, the food is well presented but should be better in some areas for the price.
We recently tried the 7 course tasting menu at The Rattle Owl and it was really superb. 6 of the courses were outstanding and 1 very good indeed. There is certainly someone very knowledgeable in the kitchen here. The service was discrete and attentive and contributed to a very enjoyable evening. For the quality of the food the price point is certainly good value too. York has lots of mediocre eating places heavily reliant on passing tourist trade. The Rattle Owl is not one of these and I'd definitely recommend it without hesitation next time you are in York.
Have eaten in Rattle Owl several times and have always enjoyed the food. Service is lovely although felt that we were seated in a busy corridor as staff were busy rushing to and from kitchen. Everyone was pleasant .
Overall a really lovely venue serving utterly delicious food. Quite good service, staff have to run up and down stairs from the kitchen to your table, so they're out of breath when whizzing through the description of your dish and clearly under pressure to get back to the kitchen.
We were motivated to dine by receiving an email from the restaurant letting us know there were a few tables available just before NYE. I liked this marketing technique and felt it was just right, not pushy but very well targeted. We hadn't dined there before, but had heard good things so had reasonable expectations of an enjoyable evening. We had no idea it would be soooooo good! From the moment we arrived to our departure we loved everything about our experience. Service was warm and friendly, the atmosphere was relaxed and calm with pleasant background music playing for most of our visit. The wine list was a delight, the keenly priced Verdejo was excellent and complemented our meal very well. We opted for the tasting menus, both the regular and Pescatarian and loved each and every course. The quality of cooking, the imagination behind the dishes and the presentation were exceptional. All in all, this was an absolutely brilliant meal and we will return as soon as we can.
Amazing tasting menu at short notice due to closing for New Years - parsnip was an unexpected surprise highlight of the entire evening. Who knew a parsnip could taste so good?! Only small point of feedback was sitting upstairs in the room with the noisy heater and when it was switched off I got cold!
Lovely menu with something for everyone
Great food, great service. One of York's finest!!
Enjoyable evening, the food was delicious
Lovely flavours and a real treat of a meal. Good service too! Thank you.
Superb experience; can't wait to return.
Excellent food and drink would recommend the sour cocktail :)
Great tasting food and service
Lovely meal. The paired wines definitely added to the experience.
First visit all good see you again
Great food, drink, service, atmosphere and restaurant 🍴. Can't wait to return
A very special restaurant, and a real asset to Micklegate. Looking forward to returning next year.
Felt safe dining with tou
Superb in every respect
We love it here.
An absolutely incredible experience! 6 courses where the only thing you know ahead of time are the ingredients used that evening! We also had the drink pairing, and it have now found my new favorite cocktail- a salted rum Martinez! I will be back if ever in York again!
