About The Packhorse
In May 2016 the community of South Stoke was presented with the opportunity to bring The Packhorse pub back under local ownership. The response to the scheme was overwhelming, and in March 2018, this C17th building – the sole pub in the village of South Stoke re-opened as a freehouse, with all its original character intact.
We serve beautiful fresh food from a state of the art kitchen. Our team of chefs are highly skilled with a great pedigree in cooking. Our menu is made up of great British classic dishes and some with more modern twists, seasonality and simplicity is the theme, we are perfect for lunch, dinner and special occasions.
Our fully landscaped garden shows off some stunning views of this quite wonderful countryside, truly breathtaking.
Parking at the pub and in the village is quite limited but there is a lovely short walk into the village from the main Midford road.
We are dog friendly in the garden, and the ground floor only, so please advise when booking if you're bringing the extra member of the family.
If you have any trouble booking please feel free to give us a call and we'll do what we can to help.
We had a little wait for food but the manager did apologise saying everyone arrived at once. It was a busy Sunday afternoon so no harm done. The food was really good and the atmosphere is the sunny garden was lovely. We’ll be back.
The service here was truly appalling, the staff seemed clueless, the food was average when it finally arrived although our group all ended up eating separately as the delivery on food was so spread out.
Thank you so much for a fab joint birthday party. Despite us being a big party (16) Diana was brilliant with the planning and numerous changes prior to our final booking... and the team on site were lovely, friendly and helpful.. Much appreciated. Our entire party have now asked me to repeat the occasion next year (gulp)!! Thank you guys... a really special occassion in a great pub and most importantly, the food was super yummy too!
Good service and great food. Lovely garden.
A lovely spring Sunday late lunch in the garden at the Packhorse yesterday. Very busy but the staff managed really well. The food was very good, especially my roast beef and we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon. Thank you
Excellent food drinks and service. Very well done . Will be back very soon
Great place, superbly restored to its former glory. Loved our unrushed lunch. The food and wine list were all great - with delicious home made flavours, right down to the sauces (a wild-garlic pesto, for example). One of the waiting staff was not as attentive as would be ideal but overall we had a thoroughly enjoyable time.
Delicious food,- I had vegetarian option hispi cabbage - god looking plate, very scrummy and husband had grilled fish which en enjoyed. We shared pavlova and chocolate mousse desserts -both divine. Gardens were delightful, but the cold weather drove us inside. Staff very accommodating of our large hounds. Would have liked more vegetarian choices or even vegan -perhaps a starter that can be turned into a veggie or vegan main..
We sat upstairs in a very plain room, but once full, the atmosphere was good. The service was willing, the staff all enthusiastic but it was a little haphazard with no forks, having to ask several times for water and the bathroom flooding! Food was delicious!
Initial service was good but waited a long time for the main course to arrive. Food was excellent but let down by the fact that it needed to be much hotter. Undercharged on the final bill and pointed out the error when settling up. Staff were very friendly, apologetic and attentive, but service was a bit too slow. .
Lovely beer garden Attentive service Roast beef - yummy 😋
The quality of the meat was excellent and all the food was fresh and well cooked. I have already recommended it to my son and his family
Had a nice meal, friendly staff. Sadly it was very cold. To be fair, we`d all just got used to summer temperatures when this very cold snap returned, but it would`ve have been great if you`d lit the fire! Poked my nose outside and the garden looked lovely - quite an achievement I think after no doubt a VERY busy Easter. We will return.
Great fishfinger sandwiches in a sunny garden. helpful and busy staff on a very busy day
Lovely environment Good toilets and beautiful situation Will be back v soon
The pub is stunning, a gorgeous building and so much effort has gone into it. Such a shame that the service was awful. Table booked for 12.30 but didn’t eat until 2pm and half the table were having sandwiches! My sandwich had clearly been sat around as the top slice had started to harden. No updates were forthcoming. I felt sorry for the staff. The manager obviously hadn’t bothered to bring/pay enough staff in to cater for a busy bank holiday weekend. As the service was so bad I won’t be able to recommend the place to anyone.
Could have had more choice on dessert menu.
cosy room, great food
This authentically restored pub is full of character and atmosphere, has excellent service, fine beers and good tasty food. We look forward to returning.
The Packhorse was the best pub experience I ve had in ages. Amazing building , lovely Sunday lunch , friendly staff, great atmosphere. Can’t wait to go back in the evening.
Wonderful to be back eating Sunday lunch in the Packhorse. Great place to take grandparents for a special meal. Service and atmosphere were excellent and good was delicious - only issue was some rather tough beef.
Great pub, food and drink
