About The Packhorse
In May 2016 the community of South Stoke was presented with the opportunity to bring The Packhorse pub back under local ownership. The response to the scheme was overwhelming, and in March 2018, this C17th building – the sole pub in the village of South Stoke re-opened as a freehouse, with all its original character intact.
We serve beautiful fresh food from a state of the art kitchen. Our team of chefs are highly skilled with a great pedigree in cooking. Our menu is made up of great British classic dishes and some with more modern twists, seasonality and simplicity is the theme, we are perfect for lunch, dinner and special occasions.
Our fully landscaped garden shows off some stunning views of this quite wonderful countryside, truly breathtaking.
Parking at the pub and in the village is quite limited but there is a lovely short walk into the village from the main Midford road.
We are dog friendly in the garden, and the ground floor only, so please advise when booking if you're bringing the extra member of the family.
If you have any trouble booking please feel free to give us a call and we'll do what we can to help.
I had Celeriac as a main course. It was AMAZING! I want the recipe! So much delicious flavour. Jenny
We visited on a busy Friday night and were seated in the upstairs room, which was great and a bit quieter. We enjoyed and meal and service was great thanks.
Lovely pub, loads of atmosphere, real fires/dogs, attentive and interested manager - and the food/wine/beer were excellent!
Really excellent lunchtime place to eat and drink. Log firs, good atmosphere, excellent staff.
Great evening out and the team coped well with our party of 13. Staff were friendly, attentive and there when you needed them without hovering. All the orders were taken and served correctly in a timely fashion for all 13 so there weren't any of those moments often suffered in other establishments when food is getting cold waiting for the final order. Less than £25 per head meant we didn't have to smash the piggy banks. Safe to say we'll be back :)
Excellent. Would have preferred to be seated in the bar.
great food as usual
Fabulous New Year’s Eve lunch!
We sat down at 1:20 and our drinks didn’t arrive until 1:50, our food not until 2:50 (only main courses). We did not get much of an apology for the wait. We asked for ketchup with our food and only got a small amount so kept having to get up to ask for more. The food was nice, but expensive for the portion size. We would’ve liked pudding but could not face waiting again It’s a real shame because it’s a lovely pub in a lovely village but we have really been put off by the bad service and expensive food now on two visit and I think we will think twice about coming back again. It would have made a big difference if someone had just acknowledged the wait and apologised (we understand things can be busy at times), but an explanation and apology would’ve helped. We would like to keep it on our regular pubs to visit list, but not with such slow service and expensive food.
Hi Georgina, I have responded to your review on TripAdvisor also. On this one you mention a previous visit, would you be so kind as to send over some more info on this one to me [email protected] whilst we get a huge amount of positive reviews any negative ones we always wish to address, improve upon. Hopefully you will help us out in this matter James
Really friendly. Appreciated the leaflets on walks
Another lovely visit, this time for Sunday lunch. Food and drink both of high quality and service was excellent.
As always, great atmosphere, lovely food, and a genuinely warm welcome. The service is impeccable. This is everything a community hub - which it has become- should be. Pubs like this will be even more needed and valued in our uncertain future, as local collaboration becomes key to our survival as a civilised country.
Delicious food served by charming staff in an unspoiled pub full of character. Looking forward to our next visit!
Thoroughly enjoyed the food and surroundings. A smile from our main waitress would have gone a long way. Perhaps she was just having an off day. Overall very pleased . Many thanks
Lovely meal on Christmas Eve, helped to get the festivities started. Food was fantastic and the service was spot on. We were seated in front of a log fire, creating a wonderful ambience. Thank you Packhorse!!
Great food, dog friendly and a very cosy atmosphere
Great place to meet friends for a pre-Christmas meal and drinks
Great, as always.
Really nice. Was for my fiancees birthday and good service and nice atmosphere.
Rather noisy so difficult to hear conversations. Very good food this time. Thank you.
We had a really cosy winter lunch at the Packhorse - the staff were very attentive - even remembering small requests. The food was delicious, log fire burning - a very happy experience.
Always delicious food in a cozy friendly atmosphere. Friendly service
