About The Old Vine
An 18th century inn steeped in character and charm, perfectly located just a short walk from Winchester Cathedral and the city centre.
Our hard-working and creative kitchen team are passionate about creating exceptional dishes of the highest quality using local and seasonal produce.
Our menu ranges from pub classics and light bites to more sophisticated fare for special occasions, along with an interesting selection of local Hampshire real ales. There’s something to suit all tastes.
We can cater for most dietary requirements, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and dairy free.
Our award-winning restaurant and bar both offer a warm, relaxed and friendly setting, making the Old Vine perfect to get together for lunch, dinner or a drink. We also serve a delicious roast on Sundays, perfect for relaxed family get-togethers.
Our outside seating overlooks the cathedral grounds, and is a great spot for watching the world go by. And in winter there's always a crackling log fire in the cosy oak-beamed restaurant.
Supporters of local Hampshire food, the Old Vine are members of Hampshire Fare, who are dedicated to promoting quality local food in Winchester and further afield.
Our private dining space (the Little Minster Room) is perfect for intimate social functions, celebrations and parties, whether for a birthday, an anniversary, or even a small wedding reception. We can design a set menu that meets any dietary requirements and that suits your budget.
We also have six individually designed guest rooms at the Old Vine - some with views of Winchester Cathedral and the Square. All offer a superior level of comfort and charm. Why not make it an extra-special occasion and stay with us?
Excellent food and service as always.
Nice place, nice food; but I knew it!
My friend and I had a very pleasant lunch at the restaurant yesterday. We were impressed with the menu and will visit again in the near future.
Better air con please
Friendly and professional service. Nice atmosphere, food good.
Very enjoyable. Recommended
I can recommend the Lamb chops... delicious!
Very nice food and nice place - although very hot inside during this climate.
Food was excellent and the £30 off was a great bonus!
I have eaten at The Old Vine a number of times and have never been disappointed. The menu choice is very good and varied. The service was attentive but not intrusive. I appreciate not having loud music bellowing out so I have to shout at my fellow diners. I have already booked my next visit.
Lovely meal at The Vine look forward to another visit soon!
Our first evening meal out since lockdown, and the whole atmosphere made us feel safe, spacing of tables cleanliness and service were excellent. We really enjoyed our meal, loved the lamb chops.
The room was lovely - spacious, comfortable, well furnished and equipped. The food - breakfast and dinner was good - although some more vegetarian choices on the dinner menu would be appreciated. Service was friendly and efficient. Altogether a very pleasant stay. We would definitely come again.
The Vine restaurant is a little gem of a find. I discovered it a week ago and had a fab meal there with my partner. Just been back for a girls evening. Excellent food, lovely atmosphere overlooking Winchester cathedral and really nice, friendly and attentive staff.
Thank you! We're delighted you enjoyed your visit. We hope to welcome you back soon.
The menu is fairly small, but offers a good range of dishes. We came as a party of six, with two veggie/fish eaters, who were well catered for. The service was extremely friendly, relaxed and efficient, if slightly slow. However, we hadn't met up since November so were in no hurry and we appreciated not feeling rushed to leave. The atmosphere was slightly lacking as there were no other diners in the main restaurant area (I think we made up for it with our chatter and laughter!) but we came on a Thursday lunch time. I would hope it's busier weekends and evenings. The place has its own character, so we were very content. We are regular but infrequent visitors, coming mainly for lunch on Saturdays and dinner for special occasions. I have never been disappointed and I happily recommend The Old Vine to anyone who is looking for a good meal in welcoming surroundings.
Thanks for your comprehensive feedback, it's appreciated. At this rather strange time it's impossible to predict which days will be busy and which will be quieter. The Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday were all extremely busy at lunchtime during the week of your visit; the previous week Thursday was busy, Monday quiet. No pattern at the moment. Apologies if service is a little slower than usual, but please remember that due to social distancing regulations we have half the number of staff preparing food in the kitchen - this also accounts for the smaller than usual menu. Thanks for your patience, and we hope to welcome you back very soon.
Lovely lunchtime menu and food with great service.
Wonderful food. Friendly, attentive staff. Beautiful location too. Will return. Definitely recommend!
Tasty home cooked food, served by the friendly staff.
Good to hear, thank you.
Staff were fantastic. My only issue is that a few items were missing from menu (no ham so that took a couple of things off, children ordered sausages and we were subsequently told they were also off the menu). Also the chocolate brownie (children’s menu) came with ice cream and cream which my child doesn’t like. That’s fine, I just scraped it off but the brownie underneath was tiny! I would have expected a bit more for £6. However, all that being said, we had a lovely evening, our request for the back room was accommodated, and as I said, the staff were lovely. We’ll be back!
Thanks for your feedback. At present a number of our suppliers are not back to full operation, with many still not delivering daily, as they were pre-lockdown. Hence a number of dishes were unavailable during your visit. We're sorry about this. We anticipate this will settle down in the coming weeks. A couple of clarifications: the reason we didn't have sausages for the children is they aren't listed on our menu! If a member of staff suggested sausages as an alternative to the ham then we apologise. The children's brownie is £5 (£6 is the adult portion). They are quite rich, so the portion isn't huge. That said, I have passed on your feedback to the kitchen for their information. We hope to welcome you again soon.
Staff all very relaxed & helpful. Good variety of drinks & having gluten free options for meals is very helpful.
Thank you! We're pleased you enjoyed your visit
Lovely gastro pub meal. Enabled us to feel normal in these strange times.
Thank you! We hope to welcome you back soon.
My friend and I both enjoyed an excellent fish pie, our only criticism was that the accompanying vegetable (peas) was unexciting and that something like seasonal veg or simply green beans would have been more appropriate to the tastiness of the pie.
Thank you! We are operating on restricted kitchen staff at the moment due to Covid restrictions. This does impose some limitations on the range of our menu. I agree that the veg option could be more exciting. I'll see if something can be done. Thanks again for your visit.
Lovely lunch - great food - friendly staff
Thank you! Great to hear.
