The Olde Bell’s kitchen team serve simple, rustic, fantastic quality food making sure you’ll experience some of the finest eating and drinking in Berkshire. Much time and effort has gone into sourcing and building relationships with local farmers and producers of the best organic ingredients, creating seasonal and constantly changing menus. Wherever possible we use ingredients ripe from our own gardens to keep our menus fresh, appealing and honest.
Service was incredibly slow. It took over 20 minutes to get a menu and food was slow to come. The menu was very limited despite being a weekend
Our waiter, Jesus, a young Spanish chap was lovely, he looked after us exceptionally well. Unfortunately the same cannot be said of our arrival. We stood at the entrance to the restaurant and reception and were completely ignored by two members of staff. One on reception and the other gentleman in the bar had seen us but chose not to acknowledge us. It wasn’t until one of the chefs walked past us and enquired if we were being looked after, he then asked the gentleman in the bar if he could look after us, finally he approached us. We purchased a bottle of wine and a jug of soda water, in one of the glasses was a slice of lemon, I dread to think how long it had been there but it was brown!! So after hearing of the past reputation of The Old Bell we were disappointed to say the least. The food however was delicious.
The hotel itself is very nice and beautifully situated. However my visit was spoiled by a very poor dining experience, food was poor and the service we were given was slovenly and surely. I would not recommend eating at this establishment which is a great shame as it otherwise has a lot going for it.
It was the most disappointing experience we have ever had all our meals had to be sent back the mussels were awful they hadn’t been washed properly and tasted bland the service was very poor we asked for the wine list to find that the ones we chose were not available we were left sitting at the table with no drinks We won’t be returning
A very pleasant eating experience in a lovely garden setting.
superb service and excellent value many thanks Ian Haley
Great place but the food was poor! The steaks had obviously sat in a bath for hours then flash grilled. My wife and I couldn’t finish the steaks and left them. Sad! I’d heard the food was good as well.
Rooms look nothing like the photos on the website, very run down. Room in the lodge smelled like damp. Laundry and cleaning products left all over the corridors for hours after the morning clean. Shower tray had been painted black to hide the wear & tare. Service in the restaurant was very slow, and they brought out items in the wrong sequence/items we hadn't ordered.
It took 12 attempts to book a table. When we arrived we were told there'd been a double booking. Then we were told it was't their fault the tables weren't even ready for lunch - there'd been a wedding the day before and they were running late on breakfast - all very defensive. We heard staff arguing. The food orders were wrong. Despite explaining who the birthday cake was for, the waiter bought it out not even knowing who it was for. The young lady that looked after us though was REALLY helpful and lovely.
We had a thorouthley enjoyable evening
Reserved a table which wasn’t available Manager was rude Bar was under staffed with a long queue But food was good
Had a lovely sunday lunch. Brilliant garden and set up for the children (4 of them in the group). Food was good and the portions were big - especially the sunday roasts. Felt like the kitchen got very busy as it took some time for the mains to arrive. But service and food were good.
Small menu but food was good. Prices reasonable for food and drink compared with local area.
Not as good as it has been in the past when we've stayed. The food wasn't great at all, even though all the staff serving were very friendly and nice. We had bought the stay and dine package, which includes a three course dinner, room for the night and breakfast, but we were then told (by the manager?) while ordering dinner that we could choose what we liked from the menu as long as we added up the prices of each dish and it didn't come to over £30. Otherwise we would have to pay the extra. Not great. The food itself was really average - certainly not the destination pub restuarant it should be, or once was. Drinks service at the bar was really friendly and efficient, but we got the feeling no one really had much experience of actually making drinks. The rooms are great though, with super comfortable beds, but overall, not the experience we were hoping it would be.
Service on drinks was a bit slow, and it was a shame not to be able reserve the more casual bar area but otherwise it was a great experience in a unique pub.
We stayed over night on a diner bed and breakfast basis. The room was very pleasant but could have done with a bit of updating (chipped paint here and there). Diner was good and would have scored a 4 out of 5 star rating, however breakfast was poor to say the least. There was little choice, self service only, and coffee was undrinkable. For what we paid I expected more.
The service was exceptionally slow.
Leider war keine Speise für Afternoon Tea verfügbar.
Terrible food, even worse service. What a shame. Was o de a great pub and hotel.
Food was really good and using Tastecard makes it so reasonable. I have marked the service as 2 stars as feel the waiters were very enthusiastic and this doesn’t suit everyone as you don’t need to know the history of the inn and constantly being interrupted to see if you want anything else. Also feel removing cutlery and glasses all the time is unnecessary does it matter if you don’t use them-just leave them on the table until people have finished eating. Hopefully these things won’t stop us returning, probably at a later time when there are other people in the restaurant as well so waiters attention can be shared around and not all focused on us. Also having not just a wine price list on the menu but also the bar menu and prices as was shocked to pay £6.55 for a single G and T was expensive compared to other restaurants and pubs.
Thank you for a lovely meal. Special thanks to Jacob for the friendly and excellent service.
My wife, children and I spent the weekend at the Olde Bell to celebrate my significant birthday. We had a wonderful time. Our rooms were beautiful and well appointed. Our dinner in the private dining room was exceptional. The general welcome when we arrived and the friendliness and efficiency of the staff couldn't have been exceeded. The overall supervision by the Events team was highly professional.
Attended for the Mothers Day set menu on Sunday 31st March 2019. Absolutely superb food and service from staff members. Wonderful gifts presented to the mums on arrival as well, which was so thoughtful and adds to the whole experience. Will definatelly be visiting again and looking out for future events. Thank you to all the team and fabulous chefs.
The service was good, with friendly staff. However, the room was cold, the food was nothing special at all (apart from the starter). My tart was stodgy. My wife's prosecco was flat and another glass had to be ordered. Handling of smuggler tap should be more hygienic. It took three times to receive the correct bill. Overall, not a great experience.
