The Olde Bell’s kitchen team serve simple, rustic, fantastic quality food making sure you’ll experience some of the finest eating and drinking in Berkshire. Much time and effort has gone into sourcing and building relationships with local farmers and producers of the best organic ingredients, creating seasonal and constantly changing menus. 3 star for food as had to send mussels back due to half of them not open. 2 star atmosphere as the restaurant was very quiet and had no music in the background. The table behind us was very rude and we're constantly swearing and being obnoxious and no staff approached them to deal with the swearing. 3 star service as when we were seated we waited a while to order drinks so ended up ordering drinks and food at the same time. Staff were very friendly and helpful when we sent the mussels back. Would have got 4 star if staff dealt with the swearing customers. Good value for money on the food but room not as fancy as the price.

We were extremely disappointed with our meal. Firstly there was no atmosphere. We were told the sound system had broken and therefore there was no background music. We didn’t have a dedicated waiter or waitress, various staff did bits and bobs. The staff were unengaging, extremely un peronalble and not reflective of an up market pub. The food was extremely poor value for money. Considering the prices are on par with Michelin restaurants in the area, the quality was poor. I would imagine very little is made in house. Of note was the sticky toffee pudding which was served with no sticky toffee, and the cake was dry or possibly stale. Our expectations were far far higher, given your location and beautiful building however your attention to detail, customer service and value for money is poor. This is unfortunate as we will not be recommending you to friends and family.

Superb venue with great atmosphere, quality food and ale and history dating back to 1135. Great place to stay or pop in for a meal and superb venue for weddings, birthdays and christenings.

The food was very poor, beef shin pudding meal arrived cold, after complaint it was heated in an oven hot but very dried up. An alternative was offered but we had already waited for an hour, were too hungry and wanted to leave. Crab toast tasted like crab paste toasties, underneath piece soggy, accompanied salad limp and clearly just out of a bag. Food was overpriced. We were the only diners in the bar so could see no reason to wait so long for our food. The toilets had not been checked, toilet paper and cardboard middle on the floor. A very disappointing experience, we will not return and would not recommend. Young man behind bar was pleasant and helpful.

AWFUL experience from service to food!! We specially booked to come to the pub (walked two hours to get there) to then be told we had to order at the bar where there was a 20 minute cue where there was endless shouting between the chef, Barman and waiters. Then the barman shouting at everyone in the line waiting patiently to place their order telling them it was last orders, then just cold food and then actually no you can’t have any food. Very unpleasant way of dealing with a stressed kitchen shouting at your customers during a normal Sunday lunch period! We managed to get the very last order which we had to change 3 times because they didn’t actually have the food anymore and then waited two and half hours for our food and when it arrived (at different times so none of us ate together) the food was cold and chewy with no flavour. A complete waste of money and time. It also didn’t help while we were waiting that the waiters kept bringing the wrong drinks and were laughing at us. We will not returning and be advising everyone to stay clear!!! The only plus was the beautiful weather and to be able to sit in the outdoor area. No doubt I won’t get any kind of response to this based on overall customer service given on the day.

4x Roast beef like shoe leather, 2nd time veg cold as it was same veg as served with first beef. 3rd time couldn't be bothered to send back. Small slice of beef undercooked veg very expensive at £23. Our friends from Australia celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with us 13 years ago and it was very good. Extremely disapointing .

I have made a reservation to the ‘Old Bell’ for Sunday the 9th September at 9pm through the website. The reservation was confirmed and I carefully checked in advance that the kitchen would close at 10pm (according to the website information). After 1h drive from London we were received at the Old Bell with a not very friendly face saying that we were late because the kitchen was already closed (this was 9:10pm). A new staff member shown us our table (a very pleasent young girl) saying that even though the restaurant was empty they were expecting us and the kitchen would close at 10pm. I was confused and asked her to check what her colleague have previously told us. After a while another gentleman come introducing himself as the manager in duty. Once again we explained what was happening and he confirmed that the kitchen closed at 9pm and not 10 as mentioned on the website. Surprised we argue the fact the this is what is mentioned on the website and the reservation have been accepted. The manager left again and come back a couple of minutes later saying that he called the chef and there was no way he would come back to cook as he had left and the kitchen was already all clean! This was now around 9:25pm and I think if the kitchen have been closed at 9 how would give time for the chef to clean it all and leave?! Anyway, the manager apologise and offer us crisps from the bar which actually annoyed us even more. We left with a terrible experience and annoyed with the way we were treated as if we were the ones in the wrong place at the wrong time! I even heard the manager saying (probably to the chef) ‘they don’t want to leave’! We were really expecting to have an amazing meal that evening and a great experience but turned to be disappointing and frustrating. We got in the car and drove another hour back to London. I did expect to get an email day after at least to apologise for the misunderstanding but nothing come through and just adds to the fact that was just not the mistake with the booking, was the way it was handled with the staff, very poorly unfortunately! The only thing good about dinner was the staff who were friendly and tried their best. Food was well below average, everything in the restaurant was dirty and sticky. I will never eat there again, I have no idea how they can call that some of the finest dining in Berkshire.

Our meal was terrible. I hate to say it and we were refunded one meal and one drink. My husband said his steak wasn’t very good and he was asked how he asked for it to be cooked (medium) as I asked for mine to be well done I came to the conclusion I would have been told it was my own fault for asking for well done! I must stress he was offered a replacement and apologies. The staff are brilliant but I’ve honestlt not had such a terrible meal. The chips were so greasy the children couldn’t eat them (nor could I). It was very disappointing as we had bee for a meal here some years ago and it was outstanding. I must stress all staff were perfect and I can’t fault them one bit.

I had no expectations before arriving but everything was fine the reception was efficient, if a bit lacklustre, the rooms were basic and clean, although the room doors did not seem to be very secure the evening food was very good with attentive service and breakfast was fine Overall a decent stay

The bar staff were fantastic and kindly opened a new bottle of prosecco as the current one had gone flat. However the bar manager openly questioned his discussion, which was awkward. We had a meal at the bell however the although the cut of meat was good the chef over cooked it. The staff was made aware but there was no apology. Overall the meal was very disappointing, such a shame as the venue is lovely. I feel they are catering for the wedding business only and not really interested with passingbtrade.
