Excellent service and food!
Make sure to put in a reservation as this restaurant is in high demand. Other than the quaint store front, this joint is also characterised by the ubiquitous long queues snaking down the pavement. And what can we say about the staff? They’re super friendly and helpful. Plus...the owner (Marshall?) gave us 2 complimentary servings of yummy oysters! That’s excellent customer service for you! 😊😊😊

Excellent meal. Service was superb, waitress very attentive. Maybe ordered too much food and we were running out of space on our table. Will be back.
Casual, rather than fine dining. Perfect seafood and steaks. Helpful and friendly service. Really can’t be faulted, made our first meal in Edinburgh a memorable one. Thank you!

Great food and great atmosphere, although it was a little hot inside.
Shame that due to booking issues it was so busy and slightly chaotic. The staff managed with good humour and got there in the end! Food was excellent and the house wine more than decent

Excellent food and really pleasant and helpful staff. Only downside was that we had to change tables due to a large party being placed next to us who were trying to break a noise record.
We were visiting Edinburgh from the States. We love Scotland and have been several times. Each time we are in Edinburgh, we make sure to stop by the Mussel and Steak Bar. It never disappoints!!

I completely understand the name mussel and steak bar, however I found the menu too limited to suit my dinner party ... perhaps another 2-3 typical dishes ( maybe a gourmet burger option or fish pie option) would have helped. The Maitre D’ was a lovely welcoming gent but appeared completely stressed out, trying to do all jobs... but always smiling ... in contrast I found the wait staff to be ineffective and inefficient, perhaps understaffed and undertrained, not knowing today’s specials, getting part of our order wrong ... virtually impossible to get replacement drinks after our first order The food was ok, we stuck to fish options. However the dinnerware was very old, heavily scored and chipped ... shocked that food would be served in this way... I also found our table / seating area to be grubby and sticky.. The restaurant is very small, and noisy with a steep staircase ( with fan stairs) and I think wants that busy noisy atmosphere /vibe with a bit of shabby chic ... my parents didn’t enjoy the atmosphere.. after travelling for a very long distance and having a hectic day it was just too much for them... I wouldn’t recommend for couples or families.. probably more suited to loud/ rowdy night out. The location is great, Grassmarket is a great part of Edinburgh city , beautiful, historic , looking right up at the castle, and I suppose this is reflected in the menu prices The booking / reservation system is great ... super easy to use.. therefore I don’t understand how the maitre d’ was so flustered ... I appreciate he will have walk-ins off the street ... however he can either accommodate them or not ... simples Weighing up all the above I cancelled my reservation for the following night .... biggest influence on decision was limited menu
The best restaurant in Edinburgh by a mile, the langoustines were magnificent, the steaks were perfect both washed down with a lovely dry Spanish white wine, plus the music was a pleasant surprise too, I’ll definitely be coming back next month. Thanks to the Japanese staff, We are able to select the menu smoothly. Seafood platter such as mussels was delicious with plenty of volume.
