About The Modern Pantry
Modern comes from the Latin term modernus; pertaining to, or characteristic of the current period. It conjures up the excitement of something new, fresh and original.
Pantry comes from the Latin word panis, meaning bread. A pantry is a cupboard or room which houses the necessities of life...
Together, these two words embody The Modern Pantry's philosophy: the desire to please and excite the palate by fusing everyday cooking with modern ingredients.
The Modern Pantry is housed in two listed Georgian townhouses in historic Clerkenwell.
The Ground Floor Café is a modern casual dining space serving breakfast, lunch & dinner throughout the week & weekend. This beautiful, informal space has an extensive menu featuring our unique style of cooking as well as a small bar serving an eclectic selection of wines & unusual cocktails to accompany our food, which can also be enjoyed from our spacious outdoor terrace on sunny St. John’s Square.
The first floor of the town house is comprised of two elegant, light filled dining rooms overlooking historic St John's Square. Classic Heritage features are complimented with contemporary design creating an intimate and relaxing atmosphere. Enjoy the same menus throughout the townhouse, with a more formal setting when booking for one of the dining rooms in the restaurant.
Also an ideal space for larger groups, the North and South dining rooms offer flexible options for Private Hire to fit your requirements.
An excellent lunch in a pleasant, airy room with sunshine streaming through huge windows. The food was terrific and reasonably priced, the service sublime. A very enjoyable experience.
Breakfast visit. Delicious food, with an interesting variety of options (not just your norm). Polite and attentive hosts (without being too attentive!). Only downside is it's slightly noisy because of the layout / acoustics of the materials so can be quite difficult to hear others at the same table as you.
Our meal was delicious, attractively presented and creative - so refreshing to go to a restaurant and not see the same menu items available everywhere else! We decided to order multiple small plates to share, which worked well as an introduction to the restaurant, as it was our first visit. We really appreciated the fact that wine is also available in carafes, and the reasonable portion sizes. The venue, of course, is charming and cozy. My only slight criticism would have to be related to service: though food came out quickly, our server forgot our drinks order, came back twice to confirm details of our order ("did you say two glasses, was it the small or large"), and didn't offer to pour our wine. He was pleasant and apologetic, so this may just be inexperience. This certainly wasn't a deal breaker, and we will be returning.
An excellent afternoon tea: both innovative and very tasty. Favourites included the fritters, the savoury scones (with garlic), the frangipane tart and the pistachio cake.
Lovely food and lovely service!
The food was not great. The vegetarian main was ‘interesting’, the Cornish fish was overwhelmingly flavoured with fennel and the cheese plate cake not with a spiced chutney but with a curries chutney. Very odd
Still as great as ever.
Fabulous breakfast. Great service
Very disappointing trip for Brunch on a Sunday to a venue famous for Brunch. And I don't blame the staff, I blame the management for poor training and a culture of intransigence. The tone is set by the printed menu 'no changes or substitutions' (or words to that effect) which basically means 'take it or leave it' - 'we don't give a stuff for whether we please our customers or not'. So I wish we had had a hidden camera when we asked what was gluten free on the menu. The menu had no advice as to what was gluten free and when we asked the waitress she looked clueless. So we asked her to check with the kitchen and she came back sheepishly with just one thing on the menu that was apparently gluten free. When we pushed her to understand why eggs can't be gluten free, indeed I asked her to go back and check with the Kitchen more thoroughly. Eventually a menu returned with four ticks on it (out of a choice of say 30 items). I was embarrassed for the restaurant and myself for booking here to entertain a client. Come on Modern Pantry - a reputation is very precious thing. When you give up caring about customer desires, your days are numbered. Visit on Sunday 21st July 2019.
Wonderful and imaginative food and most engaging and entertaining staff! This was my second visit and I'll certainly be back
Staff were so accommodating to last minute changes to my booking. I had a wonderful time celebrating my birthday over a delicious brunch. Wonderful!
Great staff, very friendly and really attentive!
Lovely relaxed evening with very good food from start to finish. Each of us wouldn't have minded eating the other's choices too!
Excellent venue - my only comment was that the table booking was for 8am and I arrived five minutes early to be ahead of my guest and the door was not opened until 8am. Better if it opened at 7:45.
A little more attentiveness would go a long way. A number of occasions where I needed to wait a while to even find a waiter let alone ask for basics like water or taking an order
The staff were attentive but not annoyingly so and were very good at showing me the dairy free options. They didn’t make a big song and dance of it which I liked. The food was delicious we wanted to try everything- we’re coming back to try the waffles, pancakes and granola!
One of the worst service experiences I've had. Our order was wrong, we never received any water and they only came once to deliver our food until we finally tracked someone down to give us our bill after waiting over 30 minutes for someone to check on us.
We came in with 4 quite lively children for brunch, the staff couldn't have been better (or more tolerant) of us... we were probably their nightmare group of diners and the level of care they gave us was exceptional. Food came quickly (which was obviously of premium importance for us) and was all perfect.
Great brunch on the sunny patio
Good food but you pay for it. Very slow service.
Disinterested service, especially when it came to flexibility with regard to dairy free options. Most quality restaurants now will happily adapt or change ingredients or leave on the side, none of this was offered and in truth the impression was that the staff felt like we were being deliberately awkward.
The food was so nice!!! We came here for breakfast but definitely want to return to try the lunch!
Amazing as always
Perfect food in this restaurant but the service was miserable and the waiters generally created an atmosphere that they would rather you hadn't come. It tainted a special birthday and I certainly won't be going back again. Noone smiled once at us, or asked us if we were happy, or offered pudding menus, or offered any service beyond simply shoving a plate of food in front of our noses. Miserable and unwelcoming.
I booked this afternoon tea as a celebration for my mothers birthday and her first trip to London from home. I have been before for brunch and really enjoyed the food - the quality of food for afternoon tea was also excellent. However, I was very disappointed with the service and would not recommend this afternoon tea to others. Despite being relatively empty, we weren't given a menu for drinks/tea until we asked (after sitting for a good half hour), I had to repeatedly get up from the table and go to the bar area to ask for more milk/tea refills and water. It felt like a 'serve yourself' atmosphere. Throughout the entire afternoon tea we weren't asked if we were ok/ checked on. In essence, afternoon tea is supposed to be an experience and I was left feeling disheartened and did not feel I received value for money.
