About The Mill at Ulverston
The Mill at Ulverston has been designed and set up to offer the very best available food and drink in the Furness area.
Our Chef's Brigade is a talented collection of experienced individuals from across South Cumbria. Our Head Chef is Mr Nigel Bullock. Nigel is a protege of our food consultant, Mr Steven Doherty, the renown Master Chef with an extraordinary collection of local, national and international food awards. Nigel worked for Steven for a number of years, rising to become his Head Chef. Nigel joined The Mill in 2017 and has carefully built up an excellent team around him, developing his own style of food using the very latest cooking techniques and a wide spectrum of local food providers, the food aims to surprise, delight and satisfy his diners.
We believe our food is the best in the area and is in keeping with our unbeatable real ale, whisky, wine and spirits selection.
Leading the front of house is Ms Michelle Wood. Michelle built up many years experience working as Restaurant Supervisor and later Restaurant Manager at the AA Rosette standard Abbey House Hotel.
Our first floor restaurant is located above the historic water wheel in what was originally the “milling room.” The restaurant celebrates the charm and character of the mill building, with original millstones and milling paraphernalia still in place in the centre of the room. The room’s original exposed stone walls and features are complemented by design touches, to create the perfect venue for a relaxed meal with family, friends and colleagues or when dining out on a special occasion.
Seating up to 40 diners in total, our restaurant can comfortably sit tables from two to over 20 people. The air conditioned room is filled with natural light; the perfect place to enjoy our delicious menus and our carefully chosen wine list.
We also offer more casual dining options in our ground floor Snug, which is located at the rear of the building.
We are able to cater for a wide variety of functions. From small family "get-togethers" to large Christenings, Anniversaries, Birthday Parties, Business Events or Weddings. We have a number of different rooms in the venue, ranging from our cocktail bar (The Loft) which can accommodate up to 70 people, to our Restaurant (40) or Terrace Bar (50-60). The Mill is a large and flexible venue and capable of putting together simple or complex events. We offer a number of buffet options, large wine menu, cocktail options and music choices. We can also offer sit down meals for up to 70 people.
Almost all our functions are bespoke and built around people's specific requirements.
Cosy place, very friendly staff and classic food with a twist. We enjoyed our stay very much.
I had my 60th birthday lunch at the Mill. There were 25 of us and I have to say the whole experience was excellent from beginning to end. Michelle and her team helped us put a menu together and the food and service were faultless. Everyone commented on how great it was - and I had the best birthday! Thank you for making it so special. Gill
Absolutely delicious meal with wonderful service. The lovely staff brought out a cake and set a balloon out for our friends birthday. Absolutely fabulous.
Great attention to detail. very helpful.
Party of 18 for the Gold Buffett- lovely variety of food and good service throughout the night.
Great family meal, food was first class
We visit here often and always enjoy the food and service. Just one comment on this visit the waitress brought the food befor anyone has brought any cutlery etc so then we had to sit and wait with our food in front of us whilst she went and got cutlery and condiments etc. She did apologise and say someone should have done it! Otherwise another good visit.
We had a fairly enjoyable evening here but where we were seated felt like a bit of a corridor. The staff were very friendly.
Excellent service and very accommodating
The Mill was very quiet for Sunday lunch, which makes it difficult to judge the atmosphere properly. The decor is lovely and the staff were very friendly, polite and attentive. We found the lunch menu quite sparse but the specials included a roast dinner; we chose the beef, which was excellent, as were the desserts.
The sharing platter was basic, lacking in flavour. Both me and my partner got a fillet steak each, being cooked with peppercorn is one thing but it was so coated in pepper it was impossible to eat, unless you literally want to feel like you’re eating chewy pepper I would give this a gigantic miss. Meal came to nearly £90 for two people which isn’t unreasonable but for a starter which was average, a chewy pepper steak and a average chocolate brownie I wasn’t impressed.
Two of three had local burgers that did not come up to our expectations!! I work for Mc Donald’s and theirs are twice as good at half the price.... The beer was very good though and worth the visit..
friendly service and good quality food at reasonable pricing
The serving staff were friendly and attentive, nothing was too much trouble for them. When they found out that my husband was celebrating his birthday they brought in his dessert with a candle and sang "happy birthday " to him.
2 of the 5 burgers were over cooked and 1 which was mine wasn't eaten. The trout dish was very large and made the person feel uncomfortable as she had left a lot even tho she had eaten lots.
Really lovely meal
We love coming to eat at The Mill. You have got everything right at the moment; interesting menus, delicious food, efficient yet informal service. Like the Deli Board options. We will be back soon.
This was a birthday meal and we were very pleased with our choice, the food was excellent, there was a good range to choose from and prices were reasonable for the quality of the food.
The Mill is an excellent place to eat. The food always looks enticing, being well presented and is of a very high quality. I’ve been there several times including the lunch menu and evening menus. They are consistently of a high standard. Add the fact they’ve got a great drink selection in the bar and efficient staff and you have place that should be at the top of your places to eat or drink in Ulverston.
Waitresses were extremely friendly but inattentive - failed to ensure soup for my wife and I had to ask, failed to bring me steak knife, impossible to get eye contact when they consistently chatting by till. Food was delicious and atmosphere pleasant, just felt staff slightly inexperienced. Would visit again though. Didn’t spoil lovely meal.
We dined on a Sunday and was not made aware of a specials board that had the Sunday roasts menu on, otherwise a fairly nice visit, chips were huge but a lil dry, I should of had some sauce. Halloumi fries were amazing though.
We thoroughly enjoyed the dining experience at the Mill. The food was excellent, the menu was explained to us by the waitress the waiting time was minimal and they couldn't do enough for us, I would rate this experience as excellent and good value for money. I would definitely recommend. Also I really liked the booking system which was confirmed via email
