About The Malt Shovel
The Malt Shovel, at Barston is a delightful independant village
pub set in the picturesque Solihull countryside.
Lovely food as always
Excellent food and service. Lovely countryside setting and ambience. Will return.
Really good night for my belated birthday celebration. Well looked after by staff. It was unfortunate that there was a problem with the draught beers and lager, I think something was wrong with cooler as it was warm. This didn’t stop us having a great evening.
Food was delicious and the staff were friendly and very good at their jobs. Thank you.
Really enjoyed our meal. Staff were lovely. Will be back
Absolutely delicious, we both said it was the best food we have eaten out for a long time. Already planning our next visit so we work our way through the menu.
Service wasn’t too slick but staff were pleasant. Venison dish although ordered rare, was very tough and chewy (wouldn’t order again). Wine quite pricey when ordered by the glass.
Having visited on a number of occasions we continue to return as both the food and service are excellent . Our last visit as a group of 10 was on the saddest day when we laid my dear Dad to rest ... once again having chosen the Malt Shovel to share food and memories with family , we were really well looked after and both the food, and service by the two young ladies working from 18.30pm on 14/1/20 were faultless .. highly recommended . Thank You !
Really nice food; comfortable. But the service was a bit over the top.
impeccable service and excellent food
The waiting staff looking after our party are a real asset to your company
Amazing food and brilliant service from Dobrina! Lovely restaurant! We look forward to coming back very soon!
Another excellent lunch and enjoyable experience at The Malt Shovel at Barston in the Bar at my favourite table! My wife’s special dietary requirements were met 100% and she was delighted with all courses. I had Halloumi Fries followed by Steak & Ale pudding with mash and mushy peas and ice cream + sorbets for dessert. Fantastic food. Superlative service. Can’t wait for next visit!
The Malt Shovel was our chosen venue for entertaining a corporate function for 27 people. The staff were all very welcoming and highly efficient at getting a large group swiftly served. Food was lovely and we received many complimentary comments from those that attended. Fantastic traditional English pub set in beautiful countryside (most appreciated by our international guests). Thank you for making our event so memorable.
As I have Coeliac disease the chef always makes sure the food is wheat & Gluten free. We find the staff extremely helpful, kind & nothing is too much trouble.
We as usual had a great time. We come every year to meet up after Christmas and as usual it was lovely and friendly with great food.
A couple of hick ups happened, asked if you could have the scallops with the roe on we were told she would ask in the kitchen and said yes that’s fine, but it came without it. My lamb was nice and pink but cold, not even lukewarm, was sent back and game back fine. Why serve food that needs cutting in a soup dish? We‘ve had scallops and pidgeon breast and it was a rather deep and narrow round dish, what makes it hard to cut in it and also to get the sauce out when you don't have a spoon. What’s wrong with plates?! They’re flat for a reason!
Excellent service everywhere but especially in Restaurant.
Lovely meal a bit over priced
It really is hard to think of anything to fault. Excellent meal and very friendly, efficient service.
I booked a table online and was given the choice of bar or restaurant. I booked the restaurant but when we arrived we were told that it had been booked for a children’s birthday so we’d be eating in the bar. I wasn’t advised of this at the time of booking or in the reminder that I received the day before which was disappointing. If the restaurant wasn’t available because of the private party why was I offered it as an option and my booking accepted? Why was I not advised in the reminder email that my booking had been changed to the bar? We had a drink in the bar having advised staff that we had a table booked. No one brought us any menus - we had to ask for them having waited for more than 30 mins. No member of staff came to us at all while we sat in the bar. We had to ask bar staff where our table was and advised them that we were ready to order having expected that someone would come to take our order as we had seen a member of staff do so for another group waiting to be seated at their table. The member of staff that we spoke to did not show us to our table but pointed to where it was and did not take our order - we had to wait for someone else to come to the table to place our order - we had booked for 1pm and were there at 1pm but I see you have our visit time listed at 1:45 so I guess this was when the order was finally taken. Then 3 starters arrived but the 4th (scallops) didn’t arrive for several minutes afterwards when the rest of us had pretty much finished ours having waited but started eating so that they didn’t go cold. When the 4th starter arrived there was no explanation of why it was delayed or apology. It’s a shame because the food was fine.
Well, we popped in for lunch yesterday to celebrate my birthday and once again we had a great time at my very favourite place to eat and drink. I started with faggot, peas and bacon - and it was delicious. 10/10 for that starter. Then, I moved on to my old favourite, battered cod with fat chips and minted peas. It was perfect - served hot and very fresh and just how I like it. NB: Best to order cod and pay a little extra when choosing the battered fish option. Last but not least, I succumbed to my weakness - home made ice creams and sorbets for dessert and as usual they were perfect. My wife and son were equally happy with their meals and fair play to The Malt Shovel for making a special meal for my wife whose dietary needs are quite challenging at times. We signal her attendance in advance so that The Malt Shovel Chef and his Team can prepare the appropriate courses for her. On this occasion, they excelled and got it spot on! The service throughout was excellent and very, very attentive. The staff go out of their way to make every dining experience a memorable one. Great team. Great food. And a great ambience. So, I was happy to leave a tip in excess of 15% of the total cost just for the pleasure of being so very well looked after. The staff worked hard and deserved it. Restaurant Manager that day was on top form. She genuinely makes you feel welcome and wanting to return soon.
Excellent place - can’t wait to return!
We were seated on a table next to the toilet entrance and would question if this should be used due to the constant stream of traffic. When making the booking before Christmas I was not advised that this was the only table for 2 people that was left.
