About The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage
The Lookout by Gardener's cottage is an exciting partnership between Edinburgh restaurant The Gardener's Cottage and Collective, the organisation that has redeveloped the City Observatory site on Calton Hill into a new home for contemporary art.
Built on a cantilever so the restaurant is partially suspended over Calton Hill's northwest slope, The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage features floor to ceiling glass windows with panoramic views across Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
Our menus offer a modern take on dishes we have evolved over the last six years at The Gardener’s Cottage, complementing The Lookout’s modern architecture and spectacular views.
Our light breakfast menu includes delicious pastries from our bakery in Leith. Our lunch and dinner offerings are centred on a seasonal and inventive a la carte menu.
We were disappointed not to have a table with a view. The staff were not ready for us when we arrived and we had to ask for plates for our starters. Some of the staff seemed a bit confused about the menu and the non meat option. However the food was delicious, if rather expensive for what we ate.
Whilst I did enjoy our first trip to the lookout there were a few things that made me give it such average scores; 1. The night we attended the weather was miserable-wet and windy. The lighting was terrible at the top of the hill and the doorway to the “compound” was too subtly lit to make it obvious that this is where we needed to go. Plus a large tour group was huddled in the entrance so we assumed it was the entrance to the observatory only. 2. I was surprised how restricted the menu was. I like my food so can always find something but with only 3 choices I was really limited. As I am 8 months pregnant I knew the duck was not an option so had the fish. Besides, my partner is a vegetarian so as the duck was for 2 I couldn’t have had it anyway. 3. Portion sizes were very small. £26 for a small portion of fish (had to forego the few mussels - pregnancy) I felt was excessive. Now it was delicious of course but at £26 I’d have expected to not feel the need to order a side. I did however...a small dollop of tasty potato for £5. Again excessive for what it was. I was glad we asked for more bread, which was actually the star of the meal for me...I was hungry! 4. Service. We had a nice waitress who seemed to know what she was doing and a young man who clearly didn’t. He brought us new side plates to our small table with the second round of bread. Oddly however when I accepted the waitress’s offer of more bread she took away what was left of our tapenade. Why not just leave it to polish off with the next portion? 5. Would I come back? Not in a hurry. Would I recommend it? Maybe, but heavily caveated. Lovely venue, nice food but I think the above points need addressing. I feel edinburgh has better fine dining options at the moment. And I’d be more inclined to suggest the Gardener’s cottage, which I do like very much.
Beautiful surroundings. Unfortunately one of the courses was spoiled by finding a piece of plastic in the food which received the comment - at least it wasn't glass! They may have taken the starter off the price(rightly so) but gave no gesture of apology.Very disappointing.
Went for the buffet breakfast and it was great for only 12£ ! A magical place, but always book !
Welcoming staff, gorgeous views and delicious and fresh food. We loved that the kitchen was open and we could ask the chefs questions directly which were answered with enthusiasm. Only thing was that the madeleine dessert was easily shareable and this could have been explained since we were quite full! Coffee could have been hotter. We will def be back! Thanks!
Would prefer choice of coffees otherwise superb breakfast
Fabulous food, beautiful building and amazing view.
Amazing food and friendly service. Beautifull view and Nice atmosphere.
Food and service were excellent, the wiews from the restaurant were outstanding. A slight minus was the the toilets, still looked a bit left over form the the building stage. Food was really good !,,
Very enjoyable breakfast with obviously stunning views. Food and service great. We will return. Many thanks.
We had a fabulous time at The Lookout and the views are amazing. The food was perfect and the staff were friendly and attentive. Can’t wait to return!
This was a second meal at the Lookout for most of us and a third for one. So we think its a great and special location and the food was wonderful. The staff were attentive, helpful and efficient. One small comment was that when we arrived it the room was very smokey which in fairness cleared quite quickly. But all in all we had a great evening and we recommend it to all we meet.
The food was absolutely delicious but I would say only one veggie option (and no vegan option) on the menu is a bit strange in 2018. Lovely place, I'll come back for sure, but a bit less often given that.
Service was generally very friendly & iattentive, as it got busier the service slipped slightly (eg: not checking if wanted more wine). I am sure this is a teething problem which will be resolved as the restaurant settles down. Otherwise we loved our visit and will be back
Atmosphere was great, service was professional and views obviously amazing. I've already recommended to others and would take my guests there too. My only little comment is about the size of pastries, they were huge, would be good to have little pastries so one can taste different ones and also not to waste any.
Amazing food and views to die for. Thank you for a fabulous evening.
Amazing location, great service and wonderful food and wine. We will certainly be back. Thank you.
Perfect. Loved the space, the view, the hosts, and the food.
Superb food and wine and views, service excellent. Approach to restaurant a problem - taxi drivers simply don't know about it and there is no signage for them - as a result of which our first taxi left without us.
Loved the food, atmosphere, service and the wonderful view. Yes I will return even if I have to walk up the hill as opposed to taking a taxi!
Was prepared to be blown away by the food, but hadn't expected to food to be so fantastic. Really interesting menu that changes regularly. Sitting at the chef's table adds another wonderful element to the whole occasion.
What a wonderful experience for St Andrew's day - well trained staff and nothing was too much trouble - late booking so they were happy to give us the by then vacant corner table even though not set for us. Food was very very delicious - every forkful - would have liked more vegetables - very memorable!
I understand the restaurant has just opened and some teething problems will need to be worked out, but we were disappointed at the level of service. Staff were over eager to clear plates even in the middle of courses when all our party were not finished. The Charcuterie was served with no explanation to the variety chosen. The music was very loud, especially in a glass box, which made conversation difficult. Towards the end of the evening the volume was increased. The over-eager service at the start of the evening vanished towards the end of the evening, as staff talked to their boyfriends and planned the next day's service. The taxi booked for us never appeared. These are all minor issues, but added up to make the evening less than the sum of its parts.
The venue is lovely Not enough options on the menu but the food is good Sat at the table beside the stairwell and was aware of a draft which I thought came from the stair area
