About The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage
The Lookout by Gardener's cottage is an exciting partnership between Edinburgh restaurant The Gardener's Cottage and Collective, the organisation that has redeveloped the City Observatory site on Calton Hill into a new home for contemporary art.
Built on a cantilever so the restaurant is partially suspended over Calton Hill's northwest slope, The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage features floor to ceiling glass windows with panoramic views across Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
Our menus offer a modern take on dishes we have evolved over the last six years at The Gardener’s Cottage, complementing The Lookout’s modern architecture and spectacular views.
Our light breakfast menu includes delicious pastries from our bakery in Leith. Our lunch and dinner offerings are centred on a seasonal and inventive a la carte menu.
We’re situated within the Collective site at the top of Calton Hill. Steps lead up the hill from Waterloo Place (5 minutes) and Royal Terrace (8 minutes). Enter through the East Entrance of the City Observatory walls and follow the signs.
The nearest pay & display car parking is on Regent Road or at the Q-Park Omni.
Taxi drop-off and pick-up (no parking) is permitted via the access road on Regent Terrace close to the Royal High School.
Didn’t feel welcomed by staff, were sat in the middle of the restaurant sardined in by other diners whiles there were plenty open tables round the edge of the restaurant. Waitress was good but the manageress seemed annoyed we were there at all. While we were there at least ten people came in thinking it was a cafe, which can’t be helped but due to the weather being particularly windy that day it meant there was a particularly strong wind whipping around the restaurant every time the door was held open for people to be told they couldn’t just come in for a coffee - maybe put a menu outside for people to see and realise that it isn’t a cafe and invest in a curtain to break the winds from the door? My starter of Mackeral was good, my partners charcuterie was dropped down on the table with no explanation of what she was about to eat. It seemed all the staff were highly trained to avoid eye contact, meaning I sat with an empty glass in front of me for some time before being able to order a glass of wine with my main. My main of mallard was ok, well presented and with many components. My partner had the cabbage, the chef clearly couldn’t have tried less. What read as BBQ hispi cabbage turned out to be pan fried til burnt finished with some butter, served with some more cabbage, a cured egg yolk and a half a burnt onion. Poorly seasoned and burnt food doesn’t make a BBQ and certainly doesn’t warrant the £18 price tag. In comparison to the mallard with its many elements it definately left a sour taste on my partners mouth. So much so we nashed off to a local pub after lunch to grab her some food! The dessert made the meal for me, a rhubarb and ginger number, really well put together and absolutely delishious, no offer of a desert wine or liquor to go with it though... My partner didn’t do dessert - she was saving room for lunch! While we were eating a table sat beside us, we were sat so close together that I couldn’t help but hear one of them tell the waiter that he didn’t understand a lot of the menu - perfect opportunity for the waiter to walk him through the dishes and show off his knowledge.... instead the waiter replied with “ok” and walked away! Over all, the experience was so poor that I certainly have no interest in returning and wouldn’t recommend to anyone.
Fabulous venue, with enviable views whilst eating delicious food.
Staff very welcoming and helpful. Great food and service. Stunning room and views to be remembered for a lifetime.
A very poor choice of food for brunch. At a charge of £18 I would expect a choice of hot food and a wide range of pastries, fresh fruit etc, not one chopped up orange! Staff were pleasant and attentive but I would not return to your restaurant.
All was wonderful. Spectacular site. Felt very looked after by the staff. Food imaginative, fresh, and delicious. My only disappointment was that I assumed it was the same tasting menu as at Gardners cottage, but it was a menu. I had to choose!
Sadly we never got the requested table( even though the restaurant wasn’t that busy..) to celebrate my sister’s 50th birthday... instead we got a table with a view for her facing the castle over lots of peoples heads.. and I got an East Lothian view - very much spoil by the piles of rubbish I could see down on.. all rather disappointing. The service was slow, the female waitress getting orders wrong a number of times.. but the male wine waiter was super and corrected her mistakes. It’s was my second visit, but to sit and see bags of rubbish and cardboard etc (even though I had made a table request) means I can’t see me bothering to choose the lookout again.
Lovely food, excellent location and friendly staff - a most enjoyable lunch
Table was too close to kitchen workspace, so there was a lot of radiant heat. Nice to see the kitchen, but perhaps a glazed screen would be worth considering.
Lovely food and during the day I think the views would be spectacular
What a wonderful use of space/location. The food was delicious. Great service - attentive although not over bearing Looking forward to visiting again.
Beautiful views, lovely coffee, would definitely come back for breakfast again
Very relaxed and enjoyable experience. The fantastic location made it even more enjoyable.
Very friendly, attentive staff and stunning panoramic views. Choice of cheese was very limited, otherwise it was a lovely breakfast.
Another great vegan breakfast at this wonderful location. I took my daughters who loved the vegan food and booked for the Valentines evening meal. The porridge was Devine as was the coffee with plant milk and the Kale main course. The whole culinary experienced was topped with the view of the resident Kestrels aerobatics. The chef Dylan showed us his enthusiasm for food and getting things spot on for customers. Thank you again for a complete experience with fabulous food. We shall be back. Gill, Ellie and Annie
Lovely food, great view, but the room is hot and stuffy. I can't imagine what it's going to be like in summer!
Service was not good enough. Staff polished cutlery as I was left to go without water and poor the wine myself. Stared directly at them to try to get attention but not interested. Booked 7 weeks in advance to secure window table and staff seated us in the middle of the room. Dining room far to hot and tables so close together that it was not intimate but could hardly hear my partner over the neighbouring tables. Staff f0cused on taster menu tables and alacarte were neglected. Issues with payment machine taken care of by matetradee well but not taking American express is inconvenient
Stunning situation on the hill, very friendly service and really interesting menus
Unique location and different take on breakfast. Enjoyed very much.
Great place, food and service perfect
The food is fantastic and lunch menu relatively affordable. The views are charming but only a handful of tables get to really enjoy it. Tables close to the kitchen area get really warm and a bit loud. Service did forget a piece of our order.
Excellent food in fantastic location.
Great food, a bit squaushed seating. The major drawback however was lack of ventilation of food smells and odours - our clothes smell now as were they dipped in frying oil!

We very much enjoyed our first visit to The Lookout. A beautiful building at the top of Calton Hill. We booked for 5pm knowing we would get the best of the views - before it got dark and we could see over to Fife, at dusk when the lights were just going on then later when it became dark with the city's twinkling lights all around - stunning! Everything was as we expected of The Lookout - attentive staff, service, food, quality, presentation. Thought it was 'Very Edinburgh' and think you should go and enjoy the dining experience for yourselves...oh and take binoculars!
Delicious food. Very attentive and knowledgeable staff. Really enjoyed the afternoon. It's rather pricey but we'll come back again. Maybe on next year's anniversary. That will give us time to save up again.
