About The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage
The Lookout by Gardener's cottage is an exciting partnership between Edinburgh restaurant The Gardener's Cottage and Collective, the organisation that has redeveloped the City Observatory site on Calton Hill into a new home for contemporary art.
Built on a cantilever so the restaurant is partially suspended over Calton Hill's northwest slope, The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage features floor to ceiling glass windows with panoramic views across Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
Our menus offer a modern take on dishes we have evolved over the last six years at The Gardener’s Cottage, complementing The Lookout’s modern architecture and spectacular views.
Our light breakfast menu includes delicious pastries from our bakery in Leith. Our lunch and dinner offerings are centred on a seasonal and inventive a la carte menu.
We’re situated within the Collective site at the top of Calton Hill. Steps lead up the hill from Waterloo Place (5 minutes) and Royal Terrace (8 minutes). Enter through the East Entrance of the City Observatory walls and follow the signs.
The nearest pay & display car parking is on Regent Road or at the Q-Park Omni.
Taxi drop-off and pick-up (no parking) is permitted via the access road on Regent Terrace close to the Royal High School.
Delicious food, lovely service, breathtaking views. Dealt with special dietary requirements discretely and With quality alternatives.
Recommended by a friend and the Lookout does not disappoint. Service was perfect from welcome to goodbye but never invasive and the team were willing to talk about food. Our sommelier, Mora, was a font of knowledge and knew her wines. A constant smile and excitement about her part she played in the evening. The Enira Bulgarian red was the highlight of the wine flight. The tasting menu took you on a journey of tastes and textures from Oysters to Yorkshire pudding and Lamb loin to cheese. All beautifully cooked and presented from a small open kitchen. Credit to all the kitchen staff and front of house team for giving us a memorable evening.
Poor signage once you have climbed the steps, could do with adding a small sign to direct people up towards the observatory building. Otherwise, a fantastic experience and would definitely return.
GREAT STUFF. wonderful idea having table laden with food as no waiting time just dig in. Service was SUPERB staff very friendly and helpful we shall be BACK
Astounding location backed up by fantastic, interesting and well executed tasting menu. Impeccable friendly and knowledgeable service. You will have to play musical chairs with your fellow diners to get all the views on offer.
Top class food, chilled atmosphere and the most fantastic views of Edinburgh - a great experience
Very impressive viewpoint fully complemented by first class innovative cooking and wines. The service was prompt and cheerful
Could not recommend this place enough. The food and wine were excellent. The views are incredible. Jackie served us, she truly gave us an enjoyable experience. We will definitely be returning.
With guests from Italy and Germany and very disappointed not to get the table in the window which I requested and was promised when I booked in person back in March. Preferred the a la carte menu which we had on our previous visit last December. Disappointed that you had changed to a set menu which we didn’t feel was value for money. We waited a long time for dessert and had to remind about it. We were however given a complementary liqueur to compensate. Overall not the special experience we had been hoping for with our guests
Fabulous breakfast. Such a lovely morning and really terrific value... we were made to feel so welcome and will definitely be back. An absolute gem! x
Food was okay, service was bad. Individual staff were lovely but clearly couldn’t cope with the amount of bookings they had in. We asked to move to a window seat, were told we would be able to once one became free and when one did, were then told someone else had asked first - even though they arrived after us! We were there for a special occasion and I was disappointed with the level of service we received given the expense of the meal. Savoury courses were only okay, cheese and deserts were lovely. Sadly can’t recommend this place to friends but it is a beautiful setting.
Great experience, thank you!
Lovely food, great service and a stunning view!
Many thanks for a delicious and delightful lunch.
Delicious lunch, excellent service, wonderful view, we really enjoyed our visit.
Delicious and what views!
What stunning experience we had at the Lookout. We were there to celebrate our daughter's graduation, and the evening was a dramatic ending to a special day. The staff were lovely and the food delicious and creative. The vegan options were very good, and it was fun to watch the chefs at work.
We found this restaurant by accident whilst wandering around Calton Hill. It's location, overlooking most of the city all the way down to Leith, made it irresistible. The staff were very welcoming, the food was lovely and the atmosphere was very relaxed. We were so impressed we booked for lunch the following day. i would firmly recommend this restaurant.
Everything was excellent. Apart from the price of the bread which I expected would be for the table not per person. Waitress was outstanding - knowledgeable about all the dishes and recommended a good bottle of wine.
Great food but poor service and the menu it showed online as there set lunch menu was no longer being offered at the same price or at all. Great food and a nice spot to enjoy it!
The service was warm and friendly and the staff were all very attentive. It was a lovely relaxed atmosphere and the food was exceptional as always! We’ll definitely be back!
Enjoyed everything about this place, the food, service and let’s not forget the view. Definitely will return
So often, as a vegetarian, I feel short changed and disappointed with Tasting Menus, but not at The Lookout. The food not only tasted fantastic but looked fabulous too. At first I was dubious about the 'cauliflower steak' on offer as this seems to have become the 'go to' main course to offer vegetarians in many Edinburgh restaurants, however it was absolutely amazing. Any vegetarians out there looking for a wonderful meal in a very special location I'd recommend you try The Lookout.
Quite hard to find - more signs would be helpful. The breakfast was poor value for money, particularly the "cooked" choice - boiled egg or nothing - and the lack of choice re bread, croissants etc.
