About The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage
The Lookout by Gardener's cottage is an exciting partnership between Edinburgh restaurant The Gardener's Cottage and Collective, the organisation that has redeveloped the City Observatory site on Calton Hill into a new home for contemporary art.
Built on a cantilever so the restaurant is partially suspended over Calton Hill's northwest slope, The Lookout by Gardener's Cottage features floor to ceiling glass windows with panoramic views across Edinburgh and the Firth of Forth.
Our menus offer a modern take on dishes we have evolved over the last six years at The Gardener’s Cottage, complementing The Lookout’s modern architecture and spectacular views.
Our light breakfast menu includes delicious pastries from our bakery in Leith. Our lunch and dinner offerings are centred on a seasonal and inventive a la carte menu.
We’re situated within the Collective site at the top of Calton Hill. Steps lead up the hill from Waterloo Place (5 minutes) and Royal Terrace (8 minutes). Enter through the East Entrance of the City Observatory walls and follow the signs.
The nearest pay & display car parking is on Regent Road or at the Q-Park Omni.
Taxi drop-off and pick-up (no parking) is permitted via the access road on Regent Terrace close to the Royal High School.
An amazing place to have lunch. Stunning 360 views, wonderful service and delicious food. A place to dine for a special occasion as it is not cheap, but really lovely and highly recommended. We will return.
Excellent night out if you like great food , fantastic wine and service
Extremely friendly staff. The fixed menu and drink were first class and what a view once you get there!!
Food quality good small portions even in a Michelin star fine dining restaurant would be bigger. So over priced — especially the 3 small pieces of cheese and a few crackers for 14 pounds!!!!
Very friendly and unpretentious staff across the team. Also first time I've been downsold on wine by a couple of levels in a decent restaurant to get the palate just right for the food. Each course was delicious and they adjusted their service around how much time we wanted to take over what was a 10th Wedding Anniversary lunch - so we wanted to saviour every moment. The view wasn't bad either!
In spite of booking a couple of months in advance we seemed to end up with the worst table in the place, which spoiled the occasion
Amazing food in an amazing setting - what a treat.
Excellent location and great value for money
Superb food, beautifully cooked, charming staff. Will definitely go again.
lovely, good value, friendly staff, great views, gorgeous food, unusual venue! - treat!!
This was a special occasion and you made us so welcome, we can't thank you enough. We were so looking forward to it and it exceeded expectations. We will definitely be back. Thank you again.
THE AMBIENCE IS REMARKABLE AND THE ASCENT WORTH WHAT WAITS YOU IN CUISINE AT THE TOP OF CALTON HILL!
Excellent food and great atmosphere.
Fabulous views, friendly staff and delicious food, but let down by the freezing temperature in the dining room😟 . I almost asked for my coat back from the cloakroom! Staff were apologetic but said it was as warm as they could make it and they were getting the boiler looked at... I’d love to come back but not till the summer !
Very, very cold night both outside AND inside. Bored yet arrogant staff. Very poor quality for a £50 tasting menu. All of our clothes smelled of cooking until they were washed/dry cleaned. NEVER again.
Attended for breakfast. Disappointed by selection of food on offer and lack of hot foods. Great venue and amazing view. Staff lovely. Would not come again for breakfast and wouldn’t recommend for this.
Had planned this meal as part of my plan to propose to my now fiancee. Spoke to staff in the run up to the meal and they couldn't have been more helpful. They fulfilled my request for a window seat and when we came back inside to tell them we were engaged we were given a complimentary glass of champagne each. Very happy with our experience and have already recommended to a number of friends and colleagues. Keep up the great work!
From the moment we walked in to the moment we left we felt comfortable and relaxed and everyone was brilliant from organising us a window seat to the recommendation on the wine. We had the festive menu and it was amazing. Thank you a fantastic treat for my husbands birthday.
Deserves a Michelin star. Amazing
We had an absolutely marvellous dinner for our joint 60th birthday celebrations. Food was fantastic and the staff couldn’t have been more attentive. Thoroughly recommend this unique restaurant perched above Edinburgh.
Once again - great service great food and amazing view. Now a regular favourite!
Magnificent views and lovely service. We just had the buffet breakfast so not sure I can really rate the food. Going again for lunch in a few weeks so will send another review then.
We had a spectacular lunch; the location, atmosphere and service were perfect, and the lunch was exceptional. Thank you for a very memorable experience.
We both had the 5 course with matching wine so I was concerned when the bill arrived to see that an additional £31 for deer tartare (which was one of the five courses) was on the bill! It was removed as soon as I pointed it out but we might not have noticed. Not good.
Absolutely perfect...beautiful view..delicious breakfast and warm charming service.
