About The Lawns Restaurant
Recently being awarded the title of Best Tasting Afternoon Tea in the UK 2018, the award-winning Lawns Restaurant is set within Thornton Hall Hotel, with stunning grounds and terrace it’s the perfect setting for your fine dining experience. Best described by the Head Chef, “we bring you classic food cooked to perfection, showcasing the best local produce with passion and exceptional service”
The team go to great lengths to design and create mouth-watering dishes, thoughtfully creating an experience for your taste buds through flavour combinations and textures. Always using the best of what the season has to offer and the highest quality ingredient, sourced locally. With our own market garden in its early stages of growing, we couldn’t get more local!
Our sommelier John is on hand to suggest the perfect wine accompaniment from our extensive and varied list, he may even share some from his Little Black book, just ask him!
We have an enviable Gin selection to tempt you to try something new, even producing our own specially blended Torintone Gin made with water (amongst other things!) from our own well.
Whether it’s dinner out or an extra special occasion, a visit to Lawns Restaurant will not disappoint, we aim to exceed your expectations and we can’t wait to welcome you.
Lovely venue and very attentive staff. Would have liked a bit more savoury and less cake. Scones were lovely but perhaps a few less nut inspired sweets. Things don't always have to be ultra fancy ...less is more but none the less a lovely experience
Lovely food and excellent service
My second visit for afternoon tea was just fabulous, weather was lovely so we asked for a table outside to enjoy the sun. Waitress sorted table outside for six guests in no time. We all had a very enjoyable afternoon. Thank you Carolyn 🌞🍰☕️X
The service was absolutely brilliant
The food presented itself as a culinary adventure. We were delighted with our selections. The service was somewhat naïve. It is totally unnecessary to say "No problem" time after time, for example in response to my thanking the waitress for laying out a knife and fork. Worse still is the command(?) "Enjoy". If we are not enjoying our food we are mature enough to let you know - which thankfully we did not have too!
The service was amazing. My sister is a vegan with many food intolerances and the menu selection was explained very clearly, nothing was too much trouble. We all had a wonderful time. My niece was celebrating her 21st birthday and the little unexpected touch of a drink and happy birthday chocolate on a plate made it extra special. A huge thank you.
With excitement I booked the Lawns to enjoy the taster menu as a treat for my Girlfriend. When we came to the front of the hotel I was very impressed. As we were a little lost we asked a member of staff where the restaurant was. She was far too occupied to assist as she was dealing with a van at the front. Eventually we found the restaurant. The poor service was to continue. The greeting was that of inconvenience rather than warmth. We were left on the table with a lunch menu. For a period of time no members of staff came over and resulted in me having to go the bar and ask for further wine and food menus. The food was lovely, very well cooked and seasoned. We both enjoyed our taster menu. Unfortunately the majority of the service was not very good. This left me very annoyed with paying a lot of money for the experience. I have paid less for taster menus at other restaurants and been so well looked after. Even knowledge of the food and drink was lacking from the staff. It’s such a shame that the front of house let you down so much. I would recommend the food to friends but probably not the restaurant for fear of embarrassment with very sub standard service.
Great dining experience
Enjoyable afternoon tea with good service. Sandwich selection pretty uninspiring though- I’d like to see more variety. Also the beef was rather thickly cut and a bit tough for a sandwich. Everything else was fine.
Very good afternoon tea, especially the savoury tea.
We were the only diners that evening so difficult to judge atmosphere but the room is lovely.
We had a lovely time on Saturday. All staff were polite, friendly and welcoming from the moment we got there. Our afternoon tea was FABULOUS! Would certainly recommend it to our friends and family On behalf of Faye, Alison, Paula, Mandy, Fiona and myself, thank you for a fabulous afternoon. Many thanks, Julie Hayes (Miss)
Service staff were excellent!
my only comment was that there were only 3 tables being used on the day we attended it would have been more considerate if we had not been put on adjacent tables where conversations were clearly over heard , there was plenty of room spare and not necessary for us all to be grouped together the way we were.
Very disappointed in the afternoon tea experience , had to wait 30 mins for it despite booking !! then we were left in an empty room , which needs cheering up with some colour , drab! never got chance to ask for more sandwiches as we no one came for me to ask ,however the food itself was good but the whole experince was not , I certainly wont recommend it to anyone, I would recommend they go to Panoramic in Liverpool , much better.
I was celebrating my 50th birthday with a friend and we thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon tea, the scones and other cakes were exceptional . The complimentary glass of pink prosecco and birthday message with strawberries and extra brownies really were appreciated ! The staff were friendly and our waitress was lovely and very attentive.
Restaurant wasn’t busy so allowed service to be very personal. Food was excellent both for taste and textures Fantastic foodie experience Thank you
Very good Sunday lunch in an elegant surrounding. Well cooked food and attentive service made this family meal memorable.
Food was superb but service was erratic, an elderly waiter forgot to give dessert menus and spent a lot of time talking to I assume regular customers which extended a lovely 3 course lunch into nearly3 hours No serving spoons given with order of potatoes and vegetables- a lot of dashing and water splashing about with no more than 12/13 diners in restaurant. however because of the food we would return. In my younger day I was sous chef at the Dorchester Hotel Park Lane London.
What an amazing experience we had! From start to finish, it was a wonderful evening! All the staff were lovely, from when we first arrived in the bar, but special mention to Meg and John, whose vast knowledge made the experience an exceptional one. Thank you for making our anniversary so special!
Excellent service food was amazing
Nicky was very friendly and welcoming when we first arrived and then took time to explain the afternoon tea menu to us which we found a little confusing. All in all the staff were very friendly and helpful and the whole experience was a pleasure. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Hotel and it’s services to all my friends and family. Thank you for a lovely afternoon.
Asked for a medium rare steak prices £95 which came out very well done, not even slightly pink in the middle. It was so salty this is all that we could taste, along with it’s accompaniments. We has to wait 45 minutes for this after our starter. Starter was fine but overpriced, wine was nice. Restaurants only had 3 couples dining.
Very friendly yet professional staff 👍
