About Thornton Hall Hotel & Spa
Being awarded the title of Best Tasting Afternoon Tea in the UK 2018, The Restaurant is set within Thornton Hall Hotel, with stunning grounds and terrace it’s the perfect setting for your relaxed dining experience.
Really feel it would have been better not to bother until the 17th of May it was a half-hearted attempt with gazebo and windbreak. Also limited selection of food and wasn't particularly nice felt I wasted £50. It was such a shame because we have had good meals there in the past and it was our 30th wedding anniversary.
Very Impressed with the covid arrangements. Service was good as was the food.
Waited over an hour to be served a salmon dish which was cold. Dish sent back but by the time we listened to the excuses coming from the kitchen it would have taken far too long to reorder so had a beef sandwich instead. All other diners were served before us. Our waitress was very apologetic and efficient but we were very disappointed and surprised at the poor service. We had a free pot of tea as an apology.
Thank you for your email requesting feedback from my recent visit to Thornton Hall Hotel and Spa. I do feel a little uncomfortable providing this feedback as I much prefer to be able to say nice things but sadly my experience was not a good one. I had booked this lunchtime treat as a special Mother’s Day present for my mum as I know how much she loves Thornton Hall. We arrived in plenty of time for our 12.30 booking and were met by a friendly member of your team and shown to our table. Our first choice for lunch, the lamb, was not available as the delivery had not been received, so we opted for the chicken on a bed of vegetables and as this did not come with an accompaniment, I ordered two sides of chips. Unfortunately, and in all honesty, the chicken was truly over priced at £17.00 for what arrived. Two small chicken breasts in a bowl with a small amount of watery sauce and what appeared to be a smattering of frozen vegetables underneath, in fact my mum’s vegetables were cold, as though they had been cooked from frozen but not thoroughly, a fact I was unaware of until we had left the venue as she didn’t want to hurt my feelings and spoil the treat. The chips didn’t arrive with our meal, and after a few attempts we managed to attract the attention of one of the team, who brought them to us but by then we were half way through our meal. I understood that it was particularly busy that afternoon, but the service, although friendly, wasn’t very good. When I came to pay, I found that a ‘service charge’ of £6.80 had been added to my bill. I was told that this could be removed if I wished but as this was in front of my mum and it was her treat day, I was too embarrassed to ask for it to be deducted. I have always believed that a service charge should be at the discretion of the customer, not forced upon you with an option to challenge it. It puts people in a very awkward and uncomfortable position. I did not highlight our experience at the time as mum seemed to be really enjoying herself and I didn’t want to spoil the occasion, but when we were driving home, I hinted that I was a little disappointed and asked her directly what she thought of her meal. She was diplomatic, but it was clear that she was very disappointed too, she loved the venue as always, but did not enjoy her meal. For what it was, it was a very expensive lunch. I don’t think anyone would have an issue with paying for quality dining, but sadly this was not one of those occasions.
All three staff that we interacted with (2 x f, 1 x m) were incredibly friendly, polite and helpful. The weather was awful and we did feel bad for them having to walk across to us in the rain, but you wouldn't have known it was a problem for them. They still arrived with smiles and polite chat despite the cold they must have been feeling.
We visited here on Saturday at 6. The staff were lovely but the menu very limited and a bit pricey for what is was. The drinks were also very pricey. I ordered fish and chips and my wife had the lamb which she said was lovely. My fish, however, was tasteless and overcooked to the point that every time I Cut into it bits fired off the table. Sorry but I was very disappointed and a little embarrassed as expected more.
Unfortunately we won’t be visiting again. Despite there being more than enough staff, the service was poor. We waited 25 minutes for a pot of tea and the basics, like a teaspoon and the soya milk I requested, were forgotten about. It was another 30 minutes before our afternoon tea came, and it was underwhelming. I pre-booked specifying my lactose intolerance, from what I was presented with it was clear they hadn’t made any advanced effort to accommodate me. There was no vegan butter/cream for the scones and only two cakes, both of which were bland. The chocolate brownie was cut in half to make it look like I had three cakes on my plate, and I was also given a shot glass with some strawberries and meringue (again, no spoon)! I expected far better, this was incredibly overpriced and below standard.
We enjoyed our visit, food, wine and service from our waitresses. Before our visit I received an e-mail informing me we would be in the Lawns Restaurant and notifying me of the dress-code. This was an error and I phoned the hotel to find out this dress-code did not apply to the garden. No menu for al-fresco dining is on the website, but reception staff emailed this at my request.
Lovely afternoon spent in the gardens. Food was delicious and service was excellent. Staff as always super efficient, friendly and polite. Thank you.
Extremely helpful and friendly staff. THANKYOU
Lovely atmosphere and good service but slightly over priced
We had a wonderful time it was our anniversary and we were made to feel so special. My only gripe was my main meal. I ordered the sirloin medium rare and it came very charred. It was very clearly not what I ordered so i was surprised it made it out the pass. Any way I returned and the service was impeccable. The new steak was ok yes medium rare but still alot of sinew making it chewy which was a shame. My husband's fish finger sarnie was amazing though! Overall experience was very good and can't wait to return for an overnight stay.
Excellent choice of food and drink.COVID arrangements enabled patrons to feel safe. The tables out on the Terrace were comfortable, well spaced out and each benefited from a heater close by. Food was great quality, however service was a bit slow.
Excellent service, quality food and wonderful atmosphere. Will definitely return.
Outstanding set up and excellent service and communication skills.. Team was very hands on.. Food and wine was lovely.. Music.. Set up was Very classy..
I booked the champagne afternoon tea for my parents wedding anniversary. They had a wonderful time. They said the food was delicious, staff so kind & attentive. Lots of effort went into making them feel special. They said it was the best afternoon tea they’d had x thank you Thornton Hall!
Lovely food, great service and enjoyable atmosphere. We’ll be visiting again, thank you Thornton Hall 🙂.
Delicous meal, lovely cocktails all served by friendly professional staff
Celebrated our wedding anniversary with an al fresco meal on the lawn. The staff really looked after us well, making sure we were warm enough and allowing us to swap seats to be near a heater when the sun went down. The food was great and the waitress was very friendly, and the ambience was spot on. Can't recommend it highly enough.
Staff were excellent. Food took a little long to arrive but that was to be expected due to the circumstances.
Nice food and a nice waitress who sorted our mess of a booking out for us. Apart from that absolutely awful. Terrible service, waited 45 minutes for our first drink to even arrive to the table, false promises off other staff to find out about our order. Awful. Will not be returning, only 1 waitress saved us from just leaving the table.
Great service thank you
As it was our first lunch in a restaurant for nine months we decided to book into somewhere that had always provided great food and excellent service. Unfortunately our experience fell very far short of our expectations. Our order was for one starter, two mains and one dessert, simple. After waiting some considerable time a waiter appeared with two main courses, when I mentioned that I had ordered a starter he shrugged his shoulders and went away. We ate our main course, my husband managed to attract the attention of another waitress and we ordered two coffees and one dessert. After some considerable time the coffees arrived but no dessert. We decided to have our coffee and get the bill. We where asked if everything had been ok, when we told the waitress of our experience she was very apologetic and did take the cost of the coffees off our bill. It was a very disappointing experience as we specifically chose Thornton Hall based on many past enjoyable experiences. It did spoil what should have been a special event
Just a lovely day catching up with great friends to have great food a great atmosphere and great staff was a bonus..thankyou x
