About The Lawns Restaurant
Recently being awarded the title of Best Tasting Afternoon Tea in the UK 2018, the award-winning Lawns Restaurant is set within Thornton Hall Hotel, with stunning grounds and terrace it’s the perfect setting for your fine dining experience. Best described by the Head Chef, “we bring you classic food cooked to perfection, showcasing the best local produce with passion and exceptional service”
The team go to great lengths to design and create mouth-watering dishes, thoughtfully creating an experience for your taste buds through flavour combinations and textures. Always using the best of what the season has to offer and the highest quality ingredient, sourced locally. With our own market garden in its early stages of growing, we couldn’t get more local!
Our sommelier John is on hand to suggest the perfect wine accompaniment from our extensive and varied list, he may even share some from his Little Black book, just ask him!
We have an enviable Gin selection to tempt you to try something new, even producing our own specially blended Torintone Gin made with water (amongst other things!) from our own well.
Whether it’s dinner out or an extra special occasion, a visit to Lawns Restaurant will not disappoint, we aim to exceed your expectations and we can’t wait to welcome you.
Food was very good but service slow. When i originally booked i was assured that your team could cope with seving 15 people. The reality is you couldn't. The explanation provided by manager was that the main restaurant was busy. I had specifically asked Gemma if we should send menu preference in advance but assured not neccessary. This is not an acceptable explanation. There were gaps of between 20 and 30 mins between courses and a single server when food ready, so to serve whole table took some time in itself. I suspect issue was with kitchen, service staff and manager. Food scored low as so delayed. Experience average at best and poor on food/service.
A drinks order was overlooked but it was very busy and we didn’t let it become a problem. The staff were excellent.
Afternoon tea was lovely as always ... very tasty and plenty to eat. We had fish n chips in the bar last night it was okay but the batter was a bit soggy. The table wasn’t cleared for ages and then not everything was removed. It was very quiet so it’s not like they didn’t have time
A lovely venue to bring my sister in law for afternoon tea. We ordered a sweet and a savoury afternoon tea between us, both of which were beautiful and very filling. I'll be returning.
All the staff were genuinely kind and friendly, and the service was excellent. The afternoon tea was the best we have ever tasted, we particularly liked that you could individually choose the savoury or sweet option. A really special birthday treat for my husband, and we will definitely return!
An excellent experience from being greeted by name when we arrived to leaving after a first class lunch. All four of us enjoyed every one of the dishes we ordered. Service was attentive without being obtrusive.
I would not rush back to have afternoon tea here as I didn’t feel my experience was as successful as I would have liked it to be. The service was poor lack of etiquette and fine detail. Dirty crockery and cutlery.. I thought you had won awards that’s why I came with my mother for her birthday treat.
Highly recommended for the decor and wines.
Helpful, professional & friendly staff. Surprised by a choice of sweet or savoury afternoon tea catering for all tastes. Excellent quality food beautifully presented - we hope to make this a regular event
We seemed to wait ages for someone to take our order which was only for afternoon tea and ages for it to arrive that would be my only gripe there was only 2 of us did feel we had been forgotten
It was the first time I had been to Thornton hall and it was a lovely experience. The champagne afternoon tea was a gift and it was really nice.
Not offering extra vegetables with main course- poor Food well cooked and presented Lawns needs a decor update
The afternoon tea was lovely - the bread was nice and soft and the jams were really lovely. Only one criticism and it is that my daughters scone was rock hard and dry, but she enjoyed eating it anyway. The staff were brilliant. I would definitely go back and would recommend to others
Absolutely exquisite afternoon tea. It's easy to see why this was voted best in UK. Delicious!
Afternoon Tea for 4 was a very pleasant experience. Excellent food and exemplary service. Definitely recommended.
Loved the canapes, amuse bouche & breads offered!! Amazing friendly service
A wonderful and memorable dining experience. Adventurous and imaginative flavours that give your taste buds many wow moments! Service just right, friendly but not intrusive. Altogether a meal to remember
Sadly our visit was not as wonderful as our previous visits which was a shame as it was a special occasion, our 25th wedding anniversary and we had decided to have afternoon tea in our favourite place. The service was not up to the usual brilliant standard as there were various functions be held. We were kept informed that they were running late due to staff dealing with matters and offered a glass of Prosecco or coffee. We did get our afternoon tea eventually, cakes were amazing, my salmon and cream cheese sandwiches were dry, the cream cheese was ‘cracked’ , not sure if they had been made for some time, my husband’s sandwiches were ok but the unusual variety normally put in vegetarian sandwiches at Thornton Hall appeared to be missing. Staff were nowhere to be seen, they didn’t check if your required further drinks. I had to go seeking staff for a pot of tea, the milk was not brought with it so my husband had to chase again. The staff were very pleasant but l think they were so busy. We were given a plate with iced writing on it wishing us a happy anniversary which was lovely. Overall, too much going on elsewhere and we felt our special day was a bit of a let down due to lack of attention. I noticed another couple going out of the room also chasing for drinks. I would still recommend visiting here as we normally leave after our visit very happy, but not this time. I am sure on this occasion people were so busy, further staff did arrive as we were leaving. Hopefully, next time we will leave as happy as usual. Still a lovely place to visit.
Staff were very friendly but could do with knowing more about the menu. Food was very good and would definitely recommend.
We were very disappointed with the speed of service We asked for another pot of tea and after 20 minutes were told that there was a problem with the machine We then chose to have Irish coffee which arrived luke warm £128 was spent for 4 afternoon teas & 4 Irish coffees poor value for the money we won’t be back
We ordered the sharing beef dish which was expensive at £95 and was too much food for 2 people, certainly too much meat. Perhaps consider reducing the size of the portion and reducing the price and you might find people will order a dessert too!
We had afternoon tea and everything was gorgeous thank you 😊 sweet option wasn't too sweet which is great. Service is excellent as ever. Cheers x
The Sunday 3 course lunch was really nice, the mackerel Starter I had was lovely as was my wife’s choice chicken liver parfait The roast beet on the main was excellent and the braised onion was so tasty gravy nice and homey glazed carrot tasty as well, just a bit of work on the roast potatoes that seemed to have some sort of coating on them that made them tough, but overall a lovely roast dinner, for dessert we had the coffee gateaux which was filling but lacked a real coffee taste the lemon ice cream with it was excellent. Will definitely be back.
As opposed to the slow service we received for our afternoon tea this was much better. Staff friendly and knowledgable, food looked and tasted great. A very enjoyable dinner.
Very slow service in the restaurant waiter said one of the kitchens was closed for staff training! On a day with a big wedding party! We got the teas and then waited about 30minutes for food by which time the tea had virtually gone! All this was with only 3 tables occupied at the time.
