This was our 4th visit in the last 3yrs and have always enjoyed our stay. However - our experience this time left us disappointed. We came for a 2 night stay to celebrate my birthday and to use the gift vouchers we were lucky to receive as a wedding present. The overall stay was £510 - which is inline with our normal stays however we would normally of also had a treatments included as well as unlimited access into the Spa. However this was not the case due to the restrictions laid out by the hotel - and we were informed of the extra £25 pp to enter the spa on each separate occasion. We find this excessive and unacceptable when we are aware of similar hotel/spas not enforcing this charge yet still carrying out the same procedures We did however pay separately for a day spa (£80 pp including 2hrs in spa, treatment and lunch). It was disappointing that only the jacuzzi, pool and infinity pool were accessible. The showers were closed off, the pool was cold and therefore swimming in it was not an enjoyable experience, the infinity pool was ok (however noticeable wear and tear was seen with tiles missing). We are disappointed as we found that the normal very high standards and great value for money was missing on our visit and now find ourselves unlikely to return.
great food and views
A beautifully presented and very delicious tea served in a lovely peaceful setting. Attentive staff and clear Covid safety measures in place.
Food superb. A better selection of draught beers would have been nice.
We had a lovely stay. Everything was perfect. Staff very attentive in all areas.
Thankyou for a lovely afternoon!
Our spa experience was a little disappointing but appreciate the measures in place with regards to Covid. And the changes made to only access it within your check in/ out is also disappointing, this is prior to Covid. Cocktails are a little expensive, more expensive than a city centre bar. Our room was amazing, the best we have stayed in.
I will send you an email .. I am not sure you will want to publish my review
Fabulous hotel perfect location with excellent staff, very clean and tidy.and the food is amazing. Would highly recommend
We would just like to thank everyone once again for making our stay so enjoyable. The food was amazing & the service excellent as always. We will definitely be returning again soon.
Same cover music on loop is not great. Strangly quiet when dining & eating breakfast ? Due to less tables & social distancing.
Usual times with COVID but a pleasant experience. The restaurant would suit a sommelier as the wine on all 3 nights wasn’t served at the right temperature and even in the wrong glasses on the 1st night! Food was very good and my other half would certainly recommend the sticky toffee pudding!!! Look forward to coming back in the future for the stunning views over Bassenthwaite Lake.
A absolutely stunning hotel with dreamy views we could look at all day!! The staff is very professional and made us both feel very welcome. It’s was our wedding anniversary and the restaurant made us a special dessert as a gift which was a lovely touch. We can’t wait to return for another stay. The beds including the pillows are extremely comfortable which is hard to find in hotels. Highly recommend this hotel to anyone that wants to be made to feel like royalty.
We were returning customers having stayed here three years ago - it was a special memory for us so chose to spend our honeymoon with you and we were so disappointed. Even though I told you at booking that it was our honey moon we received no congratulations at check in, no card or acknowledgment at all. The food was not great, bland at best, not the quality we were expecting for a two rosette restaurant. We we returned the over priced cheese board back with its tiny slithers of cold cheese, not the showcase of the local specialities - there was more chutney and crackers then cheese. The ambiance in the dining room was not great - there is a lot of noise and faffing by the waiters sideboard, removing coshes, waiters discussing how they are going to share the remaining salad of Luke warm rare beef between four plates, surely this is better off done in the kitchen. Breakfast was better. My wife enjoyed her massage and we made good use of the spa facilities the first day. My treatment the next day at the spa was rather tarnished as I was told I would have to wear my robe to the spa, leave my clothes in the car in the car park, collect them after treatment and get changed in the toilet. I asked if I could keep our room for just 10 minutes more so I could return and get dressed. That is when I was given the above advice. Check in is 3pm, checkout is 11am. I really don’t know why the few people Having treatments at this time and who had to check out could not be accommodated. The man at reception was rude, unaccommodating completely ruined my experience. We were so disappointed that we chose to spend our special weekend with you, unfortunately we will not be returning again.
Would have given 5 but unfortunately I found a hair in one of my cakes
We are regular visitors to the hotel, which says it all! They offer excellent service and value for money.
Wonderful base for a walking holiday with the family.
Stayed at this hotel a few times and loved it but probably wouldn’t stay again. Paying extra for spa facilities now is unreasonably in my opinion as is having to pay an extra supplement on evening meal.
the hotel was lovely, but we had a room at the front of the house near main entrance. There was people outside the door smoking and chatting and the smell of smoke was coming in the window so we had to shut it.
Room and bathroom rather on small size for the price we paid. TV had no signal and we didn't like to insist it was repaired due to covid restrictions on employees entering occupied rooms. For this restriction the hotel needs to make doubly sure that every thing is in good working order prior to occupation
This is our third visit to Armathwaite hall and we love it. This time the service was a bit slower than usual but understandable given the COVID-19 situation. However this did not spoil our experience at all. We were not there to be in a rush but to relax and take our time. Well done to all staff. The Cocktail barman was exceptional as usual. Well Done Team Armathwaite!!
Breakfast on both the 26th and 27th August were wonderful. Having been at the hotel back in February and having sampled the Eggs Benedict back then, there was only 1 dish we were going to have on our return and neither morning disappointed. The quality of the food was as high as it was 6 months ago, coupled with gorgeous fresh coffee and lightly browned toast plus the local tasty butter, everything was perfect and if we could have fitted another Eggs Benedict in each, we would have been sorely tempted to try! Capping it all off was the ( as usual) attentive, friendly service and on this particular morning your waitress with the dark shoulder length hair and glasses whose name I didn't regrettably find out, who worked quickly to provide us with a table in the conservatory to take in the fabulous Bassenthwaite lake and scenery on our last morning. She, her colleages and your fantastic chefs made it a wonderful final morning, thank you.
Positives: - Food was excellent - Breakfast was great - Grounds very beautiful - Duty manager dealt with poor service issues well Room for improvement: - No facility for us to leave our bags anywhere pending check in - Spa access times has not linked in with check in staff. Meaning we had no room to change in pending our spa session - Hotel is very tired. It needs redecorating, was crumbly and peely. There was black mould in our bathroom. The whole place felt a little like a retirement home - Worst service of any hotel I have ever stayed in. One of the waiters confronted me and accused me of calling him a liar when I asked reception a question I had already asked him - In general all service staff appeared inexperienced and did not show simple courtesy such as showing guests to their table - Spa was grossly overpriced, should be included in a rate of £180 per night. To pay £25 a head for three pools and a jacuzzi for a fixed 2 hour session is outrageous - Bathroom very small in our room I would not recommend this hotel to anybody to stay in. Food was good, service was abysmal and thoroughly ruined our stay.
Lovely food. Coffee was a bit bitter. Please invest in new teapots we had two and with both it was impossible to pour without spilling some. Service was perfect, attentive but not at all rushed.
Wonderful food, wonderful service and attentiveness from the staff. Started with Both started with poached egg with potato salad and hollandaise sauce, which was full of flavour and progressed onto ribeye steak cooked to your liking and with a peppercorn sauce and truffle and parmesan chips, again full of flavour and the chips large but fluffy . Battered cod, also served , had a crispy but light batter and fish that was so fresh it flaked on contact, with fluffy and large triple cooked chips. Was too full for dessert but had had sticky toffee pudding the previous night which was gorgeous and served with a scoop of ice cream on the side. Delicious!
