About The Jews House Restaurant
Here at The Jews House Restaurant our aim is quite simple: To give you an experience you remember for it's great cooking and attentive service. Award winning Chef Gavin Aitkenhead and Samantha Tomkins have had the restaurant over twelve years. Housed in one of the oldest building in the beautiful and historic city of Lincoln. We are located at the bottom of Steep Hill. A stones throw from the Cathedral and Castle and convenience of the city center.
Gavin's philosophy on food is simple. "My aim as a chef is first and foremost about flavour, then we can get to work on the right balance of textures and cooking techniques. I am passionate about using the best suppliers whether a simple salad or a beautiful saddle of lamb."
The restaurant is over two floors, which is perfect for a romantic dinner for two or a private party with family and friends.
Very good value, and all-round good experience
We booked for lunch via your website and were offered a choice of menus which included the A La Carte. However, on arrival we were told that only the four course taster menu and the limited lunchtime menu were available - leaving us struggling to choose from only three options for each course. We were then told that the only meat based main course had been substituted for a lesser alternative. Unfortunately when this arrived the sirloin steak was rather tasteless and somewhat tough. It was also very evident that the bread served was far from fresh and heated to give some much needed moisture. The redeeming feature was the pork starter, which was genuinely enjoyable. The service from our waitress was cold and lacking in personality and when we advised her that the substituted sirloin dish had not been enjoyed we were bluntly advised ‘we couldn't get anything else’. Our comments were possibly not passed to the front of house manager as it was not mentioned afterwards. We also expressed our disappointment the A La Carte menu was not available as booked and were told that Gavin was prepping for the evening - if this were the case the website should clearly state it is not available during the day. The house wines we chose were enjoyable. However overall it was a disappointing experience for a restaurant recommended by work colleagues, as we are new to the area. This was our first visit to The Jews House Restaurant and sadly will probably be our last.
We feel we had to respond to your review, as we felt it was very unfair and misguided. Firstly, it states on our website that if you would like the A La Carte menu at lunch then you would need to pre-order. We received no pre-order for your booking. The reason for this is because we are preparing throughout the day for the evening and at lunchtime, not all the dishes would be ready. Regarding the lesser substitute meat, this was a dry aged sirloin of beef, certainly not inferior in quality, just a totally different cut and cooking method. The bread is homemade and baked fresh, which our customers always comment on how good it is. That aside, very happy you enjoyed the Pork dish! Regards
Excellent, attentive staff made the whole evening feel exceptional. Food was sublime, the only reason I didn't score full marks was the lack of 'duck confit' with the turbot. This is a treat not to be missed, would highly recommend.
Excellent service, nice ambience and delicious food.
A quiet meal for date night. Both had the taster menu over 4 courses. Quality and taste of all courses totally exceeded our expectations to the extent that we'd say that this was the best meal we'd ever had. Service was outstanding and overall a marvelous evening - Many thanks to all the staff at The Jews House for making our visit so special
A great find - the food was very high quality although the main course, whilst being a wonderful flavour, was only luke-warm. A very atmospheric restaurant in a historic part of the city. Service was, however, very, very slow - but the service staff very pleasant indeed. To be fair they are hampered by very little space and a tiny kitchen. The food really is very good ...
Fantastic food and wine, perfect way to celebrate!
An excellent discovery. We’ll be back.
Delicious Mother's day meal - from start to finish we were very looked after, the food was amazing and the service impeccable. Will definitely be recommending this restaurant.
Delightful, friendly, competent, unobtrusive service Stunning food, which was delicious and beautifully presented without being pretentious excellent atmosphere We would definitely eat here again if ever we come back to Lincoln, and have already recommended you to everyone who asked how our trip went! Thank you so much for a wonderful evening.
Excellent food and service
Great meal as always. Thoroughly enjoyed the six course tasting menu. Will be back again over the summer 👍
The Food was fantastic and it felt so cosy, it is a wonderful restaurant and would recommend just to sample the excellent food they have to offer. For me and my husband the service itself was a little disappointing as the staff didn't seem to notice when customers had finished and were ready for another course and left you sitting for awhile before tending to you. Would go back again
Outstanding. Fantastic food with amazing attention to detail. One of the nicest glasses of prosecco too!
What an absolute pleasure - 1st visit to this little gem of a place! Restaurant exudes passion from the minute you walk into the crisp but homely setting. Simply outstanding, flavoursome food; beautifully presented and ingredients thoughtfully brought together. Service complimented the evening perfectly - efficient, personal but unobtrusive. Can't fault anything and can't wait to be in the area again - well done to Gavin, Samantha and the entire team.
This was our third visit to The Jews House and again it didn’t disappoint. From the moment we walked in to the time we left the staff made us feel special. The food was excellant(tasted better than it was described on the menu) and the wine was fabulous to boot. Thanks to all at Jews House we will be back....perhaps with Blu🐶
Amazing food and charming, knowledgeable and impeccable service. The best restaurant and the most divine food.
Lovely food & service, will return.
One of the best meals I’ve ever had, a revelation. The food was excellent, full of flavour and an imaginative mix of ingredients. The service was perfect, professional and friendly but not intrusive. It’s just a shame we don’t live in Lincoln and can’t visit the restaurant more frequently
Me and my partner really enjoyed everything about the restaurant and food. I would highly recommend this place to friends and family. Very good food and very good hosts
We had an excellent meal at The Jew’s House restaurant. The staff were very efficient, helpful, polite and friendly. The food was delicious. An evening at the restaurant is highly recommended.
Best restaurant, I have been to, in Lincolnshire. Book early its sometimes difficult to get a reservation.
It is expensive but the food and service is top quality, well worth visiting for a special occasion.
highly recommended restaurant.
Excellent food and service at a great venue, conveniently located near the City Centre. I would highly recommend the restaurant and look forward to visiting again.
