About The Idle Rocks
The Idle Rocks is located on the Roseland Peninsula in the heart of St Mawes, an idyllic spot voted as the best seaside town in the UK.
Anchoring St Mawes’ reputation as a desirable Cornish location, this small hotel is considered one of the region’s top luxury British retreats.
The hotel restaurant, led by ex Le Manoir chef Dorian Janmaat, focuses on locally sourced produce with flavour, texture and presentation being integral to all dishes.
Dorian and his team have designed a menu around stories brought to fruition through carefully developed relationships with local suppliers, fishermen and farmers.
It's a true celebration of Cornwall and offers an unforgettable culinary journey, with strong emphasis on seasonal flavours, keeping true to our sustainability ethos.
The Restaurant is open 7 days a week for lunch & dinner, with dining on the terrace during the Spring & Summer months.
We offer a welcoming and lively atmosphere, with music playing, guests chattering, cocktails being created and a fantastic wine list to mull over and enjoy.
Wonderful location, fabulous service and stunning food. A superb birthday treat on 23rd Dec without a mention of Christmas - fantastic!
Really lovely food. Great service - all very calm, quietly attentive and friendly. Sad to see that you will close now until Feb!! All the best. We'll be back. We are 40 minutes away so this will be a regular. Thank you.
We came for a family dinner on Christmas Eve. The welcome we received was wonderful. Just a couple of points for you all to reflect on..... I love beetroot - but not in three of the courses! We had ordered a bottle of good white wine and a pretty decent bottle of red, just slightly surprised to find the waiter decanting it when we had drunk half of it - hopefully not normal practice. He had served it to us so knew we had had drunk half of it. The whole service was rather hurried, plates cleared before one of us had finished eating....I know we are living in unsettled times but there was no reason to rush us through the evening. Little things like us having to ask for water shouldn't happen at Relais and Chateaux standard hotels.
We had a beautiful holiday at the Idle Rocks! The hotel is perfectly located to enjoy the view and the sound of the sea even if outside it’s raining and windy :)! Professional and friendly, the staff was always there when we needed something but still discrete! We had amazing dinners at the restaurant, the menu is exceptional! Everything was perfect and we can’t wait to come back!
Has an amazing dinner for my birthday on December 20th. The extra small courses were wonderful, i had the truffle egg and then venison which was sublime. Highly recommend it
The meal was exceptional and the service impeccable
Absolutely fantastic meal with my wife on Saturday night. Honestly one of the best meals of my life, the food was superb and our waitor was exceptional; I trusted him with pairing wines to each course and he absolutely nailed it! Everyone was very friendly and professional. As a chef I find it hard not to criticise when going out for a meal, but I really could not find fault with anything. Dorian and his team are smashing it, keep up the good work!
We had a wonderful evening. Ivan in particular made sure we had fun and recommended some fantastic wines.
Excellent December lunch. Could not be faulted. Have been before and will visit again. A real treat.
What a beautiful dinner! Everything was just perfect! Delicious food, professional service and beautiful atmosphere!
Memorable evening with delicious food and Cornish wine.
Stiff and outdated approach to service ruined our experience. While the food was good and presented immaculately in any major town this restaurant would not get away with its pricing. London/Bristol restaurants, and even many in Falmouth, beat this on flavour at half the price (one in Falmouth with compatible situation overlooking the rocks too). Service was from the 90s, with waiters checking our table at least every 3 minutes and topping up glasses after every single sip, we felt suffocated. It actually seemed like the waiters were a little scared - I’d suggest they’re doing as instructed by management. Pastry dishes were standout, excellent and probably justified the price but not the other courses. Oddly the cheaper sister restaurant at Mawes Hotel had none of the above problems (though an incomparable menu).
A thoroughly pleasant experience
Loveliest afternoon, amazing food and drinks with an incredible view!! Would very happily recommend to anyone looking for a relaxed restaurant atmosphere. Compliments to the chef with the festive lunch menu, everything was to die for.
Lovely setting and beautiful restaurant. Excellent food and wine and a lovely team at the restaurant and hotel who looked after us wonderfully. Thank you
My mum and dad visited and said the food was “stunning”. They were blown away but the food, location and staff. Staff were very helpful and accommodating as I was paying the bill for them over the phone for them.
Perfect in every way. And the view also helps
Beautiful surroundings and awesome staff, food and service.
We had an excellent meal with courteous and attentive service.
Beautiful meal, excellent service, a perfect evening!
Having booked the Idle Rocks for lunch on my husband's birthday I was initially concerned to find I had committed us and friends to a rather expensive 3 course meal. However, the food was amazing and as we were beautifully warm in a lovely dining room with attentive staff it was a perfect way to spend an afternoon watching the sea change colour as the sun came and went. The best part for me were the innovative courses with unusual ingredients I hadn't come across before. I was slightly disappointed that the team didn't manage to put a candle in anything for my husband but otherwise we all agreed we had had an excellent time and it had been well worth the money.
Glorious day when we were there. In dining room with windows letting in the sunshine. Staff v attentive. Food delicious. Lovely ambiance
Stunning. A perfect dining experience from start to finish. The service was fantastic with every staff member that we came into contact with being a credit to the establishment. The meal itself was lovely and I can highly recommend the pork belly in particular. A must visit for anyone either staying in or taking a day trip to St Mawes.
