About The Honours

Having launched the Michelin-starred Restaurant Martin Wishart in 1999, Martin Wishart at Loch Lomond in Cameron House Hotel in 2008 and his exclusive Cook School in 2007, Martin opened The Honours Brasserie to great acclaim in 2011.

Martin aims to further strengthen Scotland's reputation for good food and to inspire others with his unequivocal enthusiasm for the very best traditional and modern French cuisine. The Honours Brasserie represents the exciting next step of his journey.

The restaurant's name makes reference to the moment in Scottish history when Sir Walter Scott — who lived nearby — uncovered the Scottish Crown Jewels, also known as The Honours of Scotland.

In addition, the name owes a debt to a rare 18th century book, "the Honours of the Table". In this celebrated volume, the author, Rev. Dr. John Trusler, advised the youth of the day on table etiquette, exclaiming that: "To do the honours of a table gracefully, is one of the outlines of a well-bred man..."

The Honours is the casual sister of Martin Wishart’s flagship Leith restaurant and opened in 2011. There is a bar as you enter, and the dining room is on the left. It is smartly decorated, so although a brasserie in style it feels a touch more formal than, say, a pub. Paul Tamburrini is the head chef, and has been here since the restaurant opened.. He had been executive chef at One Devonshire Gardens for almost five years, and before that had been head chef at the Cameron House hotel in Loch Lomond, which ironically now houses another Martin Wishart restaurant. The menu has lots of appealing dishes, and a wide selection of aged Scottish beef. The wine list had detailed tasting notes, and labels such as Leyda Reserve Merlot 2015 at £28.50 for a bottle that you can pick up in the high street for £10, Little Beauty Pinot Noir 2014 at £50.50 compared to its retail price of £27, and Henri Darnat Mersault 2013 at £90 for a wine whose current market price is £43. I was intrigued to try the smoked salmon, which is smoked for the restaurant by a butcher called Campbell’s Fine Meat in Linlithgow. We had a taste as sort of amuse-bouche, served with a quail egg and chopped onion and chives. It is hard to score something like smoked salmon, but this was definitely a superior form of the breed, having excellent flavour and silky texture. This is up there with some of the very best smoked salmon that I have tried. A signature dish of the restaurant is truffled tagliatelle with scallops. This featured hand-dived Orkney scallops excellent pasta and Italian black truffles. This was a lovely dish, the scallops top class and the hint of truffle coming through nicely (16/20). Crab with Marie rose sauce was enjoyable if not quite in the same league, the crab fresh and shell-free, served with chopped tomato, white radish, espelette pepper, the sauce, wheat cracker and a garnish of nasturtium leaf and pea shoots. For me the sauce could have been a bit more boldly seasoned, but this was certainly a good dish (15/20). Halibut came with fennel and tapenade of black olive and pepper. The fish was accurately cooked and the tapenade worked nicely to lift the mild flavour of the halibut (15/20). Partridge was even more impressive, avoiding the rubbery tendency that this meat can have in less skilled hands than these. The bird was served with crisp and nice salted game chips and bread sauce, with a green salad on the side (16/20). Both thin chips and green beans were capably made. Cheese was in good condition, a selection including St Maure de Touraine. For dessert we had apple tart tatin, the puff pastry here made from scratch in the kitchen and having excellent texture, the apples cooked until golden but not beyond, their sharpness nicely balancing the sugar used. This was a very fine tart tatin indeed (17/20). Service was excellent, led by a manager who had served m six years previously when I had been to Wishart in Leith. Drinks topping up was slick, the dishes came at a steady pace and the waiters we encountered were friendly and professional. The bill came to £106 a head, but that was with copious amounts of good wine and a cheese course. If you had three courses and shared a modest bottle then a typical cost per person would be about £70. Given the high quality of the produce used here and the skill in the kitchen that seems pretty fair to me.

The food, service and ambiance was excellent. I eat out regulatory with my job all over the country and my clients and I agreed it was the best meal we had, had this year. Waiter was fabulous, I am unable to recall his name, something like Alexio and the barman came to chat and created bespoke cocktails for my guests. Highly recommend!

We enjoyed a very nice lunch here in October. A beautiful setting, although rather quiet when we visited. Food was fabulous. Delicious and lovely to look at. An alternative dessert offered when one of us didn't fancy any of the options on the menu. Exemplary, friendly service throughout. Set price lunch menu is great value for this standard.

Always very good. Food excellent and service as expected with one disappointment. On booking I was asked if it was a special occasion and I said yes my mothers 85th birthday. I kind of thought they would do something (since they had asked) like a little icing message with the coffee type thing. But nothing so not sure why they asked.

The whole team and wonderful food made it a very special afternoon for us. My husband is a wheelchair user and the staff were so attentive including helping us out to the taxi at the end. Special mention for Alessio who looked after us very well throughout. Everything we had was delicious and well matched with the wine. Thank you - we will definitely be back!

Server rushed and cleared plates before we were both finished. Seemed pretty miserable and we felt his approach to us put a bit of a downer on the experience. Food was beautiful and had such care taken but the same care must be taken at the table. Should say, all other staff members were very friendly but naturally you spend more time with your server and this has an impact.

We chose the Honors Table menu and it was delicious. Our waiter even arranged for my friend to have a tasting of the risotto too and switched the partridge for chateaubriand which we preferred without any fuss. Andrea the sous chef came out to explain ingredients that we were all arguing about and was lovely too. All the staff were faultless as was the food. Definitely returning.

Great restaurant. Can be a little expensive but for the quality on offer this isn’t really true. Bring back the apple tarte tatin though!

My husband and i took my cousin and her husband who were staying with us for dinner on Friday 4 October. The restaurant was very busy. As a result the staff were working flat out. The lady who served us (blonde hair with a swishy ponytail) could not have been nicer. Three of the party enjoyed their starters.I was the exception. Perhaps I made a bad choice. I had the mackerel and found it uninspiring and not particularly tasty. Our main courses were all very good. There was a long wait from starters to mains. I ordered a side of seasonal green vegetables but it was missed out of the side orders for our table and had to be re-ordered. I specifically asked for a very hot strong latte. When it arrived it was warm. I asked for it to be re-heated and very hot. However I appeared to have been given a new coffee which was not so strong and still warm. I decided not to make a further fuss and just drank it.

Hello Enjoyed the evening. My wife and I both had oysters and Chateubriand. She was violently sick on return home, although I was fine. A rogue oyster? However, good experience generally and staff lovely.

Out standing but only surpassed by even better service. Nothing was too much trouble and the food was beautifully presented and prepared. Our annual trip to Edinburgh is always rewarded with a visit to The Honours
