About The George & Dragon
The George & Dragon in Speldhurst is a traditional 13th Century Inn with roaring log fires and dramatic oak beams. In May 2017 Chris Cozens took over the pub with the aim to provide a pub that not only sold local bitters and good wines, but local, seasonal food simply cooked and using the bounty of produce that surrounded them in the heart of Kent. It was after a long lunch in a small village near Urbino, Italy where what was on the plate in front of them came from the surrounding fields, that the idea of producing a restaurant that sourced everything (within reason!) in a 30 mile radius was born.
Food was delicious but service was very slow. To have run out of roasts at 2pm was very disappointing and we also had to change a drinks order half an hour after ordering as the original ale ordered had also run out
Had lovely Sunday lunch and stafff and food fabulous .... quite amazed at how many other customers were reading papers And not talking ... hence we felt very loud which was bit of a shame .... bit fabulous food and service
Excellent food and setting. Top marks for staff being ever so welcoming and attentive.
Great food and lovely pub, used to visit a lot years ago! Not so happy that service is added automatically especially because we ordered drinks at the bar and paid at the bar ie not complete table service as you would have in a restaurant. I would have paid a tip but in cash and an amount of my choice
Great food and generous amount. Service was a little slow although staff were lovely
Although we enjoyed ourselves I object to hiding the gratuity in small type while showing the final amount in larger bold type. Don't you have faith in yourselves? We would have left more!!
as always great service and delicious food, we love eating here.
Only reason for the 4 stars was that it was a quiet evening with few customers so slightly lacking atmosphere.
Food was absolutely delicious. Have already recommended for family to visit, service was impeccable. Children's roast a little pricey. It other than that, brilliant.
Beautiful location and venue and the food was superb. We’ll definitely be back and won’t hesitate to recommend.
We enjoyed the food and the atmosphere.
A very enjoyable evening.
We had a very good meal in a pleasant and interesting room. All our dishes were well presented and clearly thought had gone into their design and preparation. The service was good and thoughtful.
Too many staff serving who seemed to be unclear of what they were doing or which tables to look after, even though it wasnt that busy! Waited for cutlery for 10 minutes even though the food was out and we had asked twice! Also waited too long for drinks, mustard, mayo, serviettes which are really basic requests. There was a hair in one of the meals which was replaced, but we feel the manager should have offered a free drink or some compensation. No one asked how our meal was, basically we were left to our own devices but we enjoyed sitting outside and the food was ok if not particularly memorable🙄
Excellent Sunday roast.
The food at the G&D, already rather good, has really stepped up a notch. The Sunday roast is excellent, real care and attention put into getting the finer details right: the Roast potatoes golden and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy in the middle (love them!) the veg, buttery and rich, flavoursome and cooked nicely, the meat retaining moisture (often a big miss in some kitchens when cooking for the 'many') and the portion sizes large enough to placate the 'big plate' guys but not overbearing enough to be an ordeal. Really well done team, keep up your standards!!
Nice environment, great service, lovely food!
Food was excellent. However, having booked over a week in advance i was disappointed to find we had been cramped on a table for four (there were 5 of us), in the side bar area, when there were other tables available. We had assumed there were also reserved but they were never occupied throughout the night. After our mains, we were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu. A resounding yes, but the menus never materialised. When i eventually asked at the bar if we could see them, we were told the chefs had gone home and dessert was unavailable (it was 10pm!). To top it all off, we then had to wait for them to notice us before we could ask for the bill, and then wait another 10 minutes for someone to come over so that we could pay. By this time, the area in which we were sitting was empty, other than our table. It's a shame. The food really was very good, but the night and meal was ruined by inattentive staff, and overall we left having felt neglected for most of the night. Despite knowing that we were disappointed not to be able to order dessert, and offering several apologies, they never even tried to compensate with a discount, or the offer even of free coffees to round the night off. Very poor service.
Food was great, but the service was chaotic and unprofessional (although the waiting staff were all friendly). We were told at the end of our meal that we were too late for coffee (10.30pm), which we were extrmely surprised by. The restaurant was extremely quiet so atmosphere was lacking. Overall disappointing.
First visit. Very nice food and good service. Would prefer slightly bigger portions though. Deserts are very overpriced! Mains were good value.
Overall the experience was good, not having been to the pub for a number of years and the staff were attentive. The menu was good, but some of the portions for the amount charged were a little disappointing. For example the cheese carried a £2 supplement to the cost of it, yet it was the smallest portion I have ever seen on a cheese board to the point it was embarrassing and I had to ask them for more, I almost missed it on the plate.
excellent as usual
Wonderful Easter Sunday lunch, delicious roast with my husband and parents- we had a lovely afternoon, thank you.
