About The George & Dragon
The George & Dragon in Speldhurst is a traditional 13th Century Inn with roaring log fires and dramatic oak beams. In May 2017 Chris Cozens took over the pub with the aim to provide a pub that not only sold local bitters and good wines, but local, seasonal food simply cooked and using the bounty of produce that surrounded them in the heart of Kent. It was after a long lunch in a small village near Urbino, Italy where what was on the plate in front of them came from the surrounding fields, that the idea of producing a restaurant that sourced everything (within reason!) in a 30 mile radius was born.
Excellent Sunday roast.
The food at the G&D, already rather good, has really stepped up a notch. The Sunday roast is excellent, real care and attention put into getting the finer details right: the Roast potatoes golden and crispy on the outside and light and fluffy in the middle (love them!) the veg, buttery and rich, flavoursome and cooked nicely, the meat retaining moisture (often a big miss in some kitchens when cooking for the 'many') and the portion sizes large enough to placate the 'big plate' guys but not overbearing enough to be an ordeal. Really well done team, keep up your standards!!
Nice environment, great service, lovely food!
Food was excellent. However, having booked over a week in advance i was disappointed to find we had been cramped on a table for four (there were 5 of us), in the side bar area, when there were other tables available. We had assumed there were also reserved but they were never occupied throughout the night. After our mains, we were asked if we wanted to see the dessert menu. A resounding yes, but the menus never materialised. When i eventually asked at the bar if we could see them, we were told the chefs had gone home and dessert was unavailable (it was 10pm!). To top it all off, we then had to wait for them to notice us before we could ask for the bill, and then wait another 10 minutes for someone to come over so that we could pay. By this time, the area in which we were sitting was empty, other than our table. It's a shame. The food really was very good, but the night and meal was ruined by inattentive staff, and overall we left having felt neglected for most of the night. Despite knowing that we were disappointed not to be able to order dessert, and offering several apologies, they never even tried to compensate with a discount, or the offer even of free coffees to round the night off. Very poor service.
Food was great, but the service was chaotic and unprofessional (although the waiting staff were all friendly). We were told at the end of our meal that we were too late for coffee (10.30pm), which we were extrmely surprised by. The restaurant was extremely quiet so atmosphere was lacking. Overall disappointing.
First visit. Very nice food and good service. Would prefer slightly bigger portions though. Deserts are very overpriced! Mains were good value.
Overall the experience was good, not having been to the pub for a number of years and the staff were attentive. The menu was good, but some of the portions for the amount charged were a little disappointing. For example the cheese carried a £2 supplement to the cost of it, yet it was the smallest portion I have ever seen on a cheese board to the point it was embarrassing and I had to ask them for more, I almost missed it on the plate.
excellent as usual
Wonderful Easter Sunday lunch, delicious roast with my husband and parents- we had a lovely afternoon, thank you.
Thanks for being accommodating (with our little ones) and consistent with excellent service and quality food!
Thoroughly enjoyed our Sunday lunch at the George and Dragon, as did our Australian visitors who were amazed by the history. My only disappointment was that I was so stuffed after the main course that I couldn’t sample your pudding menu!
As always, a fantastic meal with great service. My family and I love dining here
Second visit for Sunday lunch- absolutely excellent. Great selection of vegetables with the tasty beef. Bearing in mind it was Mothering Sunday the service was great and friendly. Have already recommended you to friends/ family.
Excellent Mother’s Day meal. Thank you.
Food is lovely but awfully rude management!
The George and Dragon is a ‘text book’ traditional olde country pub and for me it ticks all my boxes. I visited on a saturday lunch in early March accompanied by another adult and two kids. Every meal was delicious. The sausage and mash was yum and the gravy outstanding. My fillet was cooked perfectly to my liking and was beautifully aged. I had without sauce so I could enjoy the flavour. Being the most expensive dish, I didn’t want to smother it in sauce. The kids dishes (from the kids menu) were portioned just right and my 8 and 12 year olds literally wolfed their meals down. They are very fussy eaters. The deserts continued to delight, they too were delicious and every morsel was finished. It was clear that the quality of food was reflected in the price, but not for everyone’s budget. They are very proud of their locally sourced ingredients and I think adds to the eating pleasure. I also love the idea of food being produced and dropped off by local farms! The service was good and we were looked after well. The G&D must look stunning during the summer months and definitely should be on the shortlist’s for that special dining experience. I’m definately returning to try the other dishes on the menu.
Food was lovely but the service was very slow and inattentive. We asked for things that never arrived, we’re charged for a child’s meal that was stated would be free, could have complained when we got the bill but it took more than 40 mins to actually get it by that time we just wanted to leave.
Good food, nice setting!
Ordered but the full order did not arrive.Crumble was not crumbly
Very convivial and nice pub grub
The food was delicious, we all really enjoyed our meal. (although we always do at The George and Dragon) The service was equally excellent. I just wish it was closer, but definitely worth the trip to sit near the roaring fire and eat such wonderful food.
Excellent on all area... as always !
Really lovely food and professional service. Our favourite dining pub in this area by a long way.
