About The George
Set in the picturesque village of Burpham in the South Downs National Park. Just over 2 miles from Arundel, The George at Burpham is a traditional 17th Century country pub which has been providing warm hospitality and refreshments to villagers and visitors alike for over 300 years
Excellent meal as always and very good service. Thanks very much.
Another excellent experience. Great food and service. The mixed seafood starter was especially memorable.
Been a couple of times. good food . good service. The only criticism i can give is this time somebody overdone the salt on the crackling. Still overall excellent meal though.
could not fault it. lovely Sunday Birthday roast, excellent food, friendly staff and lovely pub :-)
Delicious Beef & Onion pie with mash or chips. Friendly service & a fun atmosphere!
Great experience. Would definitely book again.
Very busy on the day and the bar staff weren't coping well. Our table was available on time and the waitress was excellent and deserves 6 stars. Food very mixed across 5 diners. Two excellent Smokies but roasts poor veg and pots.
Excellent meal and very good service, the pub and restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and we thoroughly enjoyed our lunch and family reunion.
Gosh, we had a disappointing evening. We ordered for starters: - sardines 'en croute', which should have been 'in a pastry crust' and instead we received sardines 'bruschetta', ie served on toasted bread with oil. We wouldn't have ordered this had we known. - vegetable tian, which was supposed to come with a beetroot sauce/coulis but was actually served with a pepper sauce/coulis. This dish had been ordered on the mention of beetroot. We asked the waitress when she cleared the plates and she responded that yes, the dish sometimes comes like that. For mains we ordered: - the George pie, which was 'Chicken and Leek', but there was no evidence of leek. Occasionally eating pie and mash, we didn't expect a light pastry, but the pastry was very stodgy, heftier than we have had before - the sea bass, which was exactly as hoped and delicious. The wine list (red) was short and unimaginitive. The staff were polite and efficient, but had no warmth and didn't make any effort to engage with us, nor with anyone else as far as we could see. The result was a 'cold' pub with no atmosphere and it really wasn't a pleasure to be there. Since our visit we have looked you up and realise the pub is under new management. It is clear The George is no longer the pub that was recommended to us - you have a long way to go.
Great food, good portions.
Another excellent evening. Great food and service
Been a couple of times and quality of food and service has been consistent
Fantastic food and atmosphere, as always ! The George is consistently superb and we love taking family & friends for what we know will be a great experience.
We were disappointed this time. We felt that the portion size had been reduced and the token single sprig of broccoli was meagre. It was unfortunate as we have in the past enjoyed the experience. We did not feel that it was value for money.
We really enjoyed our visit and will return. We had a sharing platter as a starter for 2 which was delicious but couldn't do justice to the main. Very friendly and helpful girls.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience which we look forward to repeating.
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch at The George- what's not to like!
A friendly welcome, excellent service and good food- congratulations to all concerned
Always a pleasure to eat & drink here
Lovely cosy pub and excellent food
We usually love going to The George at Burpham however yesterday’s experience has made us question whether to return. We were handed menus to order from and when the waitress took our order “2 x roast beef” we were told there was no beef left. This really infuriates me! Why weren’t we told this when we were handed the menus only moments before. My husband then decided upon the lamb dish only to be told that too wasn’t available. He opted for fish and chips which was very disappointing he said. The roast potatoes had no real flavour to them and tasted as if they’d been sat around. We were then handed menus again for dessert and both my husband and I had different menus. My husband chose a dessert that wasn’t even on that day’s menu; why he was given that menu in the first place is beyond me and just adds insult to injury and is hugely disappointing. We ended up paying £70 for a Sunday roast / fish and chips which was really disappointing and we felt such a lot of money for what we got. I’d appreciate your feedback. Many thanks Nicola
Lovely Sunday Lunch, staff were very friendly and helpful. Will certainly come back with our dog next time.
We will definitely recommend the George to our friends in fact we have done already and we will be returning soon.
Lovely pub. We really enjoyed our Sunday roast - the pork was beautifully cooked and the veg were really flavoursome. I also had a delicious berry crumble for dessert. Helpful, efficient staff and welcoming atmosphere
We were happy with the service food etc and would visit again..but.. When we examined the bill just after we had paid on two cards we noticed that the receipt included 10% service charge. When we did a little mental maths we could see the charge listed as 10% was actually 20% of the bill. We mentioned it at the time, and the extra 10% was refunded. I think this should be looked into as would like to think this was not intentional, and isn't happening repeatedly. Listing the charge as 10% and actually adding 20% is not really acceptable, don't you think?
