Lovely place and food. Very quiet
The food was fantastic! I will definitely be recommending people to come here. I don't think we would be able to afford this place without First Table so that was a plus.
The entree was not bad at all. The main dish was really good especially the chicken, but the steal from my partner was hard. The dessert was only one option or cheese (i don’t know if cheese belongs in there). The apple crumble doesn’t make you feel wow. Its just dice green apple with crumble and small vanilla ice cream on top and its too simple and easy. The worst thing was the main dish arrived 1hr after the entree. Theres only 1front of house who everything and feels like 1chef for back of the house.

An awesome evening was had by all our staff and invited special guests. Everybody enjoyed themselves tremedously. The atmosphere was great and the food was exceptional. Highly recommended
This is my third visit to the General as the food is excellent. However there needs to be more communication from the waiter and also a much bigger wine list with some French and Italian. I would also keep some favourites on the menu like the sensational venison carpaccio and the langoustine pasta!
Unsatisfactory welcome - menus were provided without any explanation. I did not understand whether we were dining on a la carte or set menus and I had to prompt for clarification. The clarification given was then extremely unclear, and this was proven at the end of the night, when the one member of staff tried to force unexpected charges on us and became extremely argumentative. Food with incorrect techniques - I ordered a beef ragu however the sauce that came with the dish was not a ragu. The sauce contained shredded beef rather than minced beef. Expectations were unmet as a result and this resulted in disappointment. Atmosphere didn't exist - we came on a Friday evening and were very surprised to be the only table. There was one member of staff to take care of the entire restaurant so this was obviously no anomaly for the restaurant. The lack of clientele did not bode well for the restaurant and ultimately our uneasy feelings were proven correct.
Very nice, pleasant, gentle ambiance. Food really great: steak, fish, bread, sprouts really excellent. Normally we find restaurant food only OK plus, but the taste and finishing was superb. Only negative was really the limited choice on the menu, especially for the dessert (we all had ice cream, and it was superb: flavourful and interesting) I thought the bread, sirloin, sauce and sprouts were outstanding. As was ice cream.
when we purchased the first table tickets they displayed a scrumptious dining menu however upon arrival we got a dumbed down cheap version, with little to no meat options, we left without dining due to the principal that if you are going to be a first table restaurant then it should be your normal menu or at least what was advertised,

The staff themselves were very attentive, but the food was terribly slow. It was 2 hours from when we arrived to when we received our mains. We were almost the only people in the restaurant as well, so there didn't seem to be any reason for the extraordinary delay.
Probably if you add an al le carte menu as well it would open it up to more people frequenting your restaurant.
My first trip since the name change to the General. Overall was a good experience. Service was very good. Food was well presented and for the most part of good quality. I thought the Hapuka portion was rather small for a main but otherwise all was as expected. The wines by the glass were a bit pricey. Think they would have been about right at $3 less per glass. Missed the older decor and colouring that distinguished this venue from others. But am sure others may find the refresh a welcomed change Perhaps most important for someone returning to what was the "old" Wine Chambers is that there is no longer an ala carte menu. Rather there is a 3 course menu and a five course menu and these two menus are separate. So you are basically looking at either $85 per person or $120 per person before drinks. Menus are available at the website so you can get a realistic preview. Overall my sense of price to value is I would be happy to return but am not in a rush.
Fabulous high quality food and presentation. Lovely elements of surprise. We thoroughly enjoyed our experience. Wine list needs to have a bit more variety. There are chardonnays and there are chardonnays, having only one is a bit disappointing.
Over the past few months, I have been to many of Auckland's top restaurants with a dear friend visiting from Japan who also enjoys fine dining. To quote a phrase, 'Life is not about how many breathes you take, but the moments that take your breathe away".
