About The Forge
The ‘Old Smithy’ in Washington Village, is a 400 year old grade II listed building. The building has had a colourful past, formerly; a blacksmith’s forge, stables and even a pottery, it is famed locally for its connection to the capture of the highwayman Robert Hazlit who was arrested and subsequently hanged after being spotted having his horse shod here by the local blacksmith. Things are slightly different these days…
Now ‘the Forge’, the building has undergone a full restoration and has been transformed into an eclectic, vibrant eatery, serving the highest quality wholesome fresh food this side of the river. Accompanied by an extensive wine selection, locally distilled gins, real ales and great cocktails, the Forge is an excellent destination for those seeking fantastic quality food and drink, prepared by experienced talented chefs in an historic yet cosy setting.

Great Sunday lunch, very accommodating service especially as I have a dairy allergy
As a regular food was beautiful again on Saturday....what made this visit different was when we arrived a bottle of wine was waiting on the table for us (Georgia even knowing what we liked)..this was by way of an apology for having to wait on a previous visit for food. This was a lovely touch and we were really grateful thank you...Having to wait did not stop us from returning and has not stopped us from recommending The Forge to friends and family as presumably this was a one off and won’t happen again...thanks again for the great service you provide and we’ll see you soon :-)
Excellent all round can’t recommend highly enough!
Staff were friendly, informative and told us about future events. They are a credit to the Forge.
Love it here and will come back over and over. Fantastic food and a lovely place to spend our anniversary. Sarah Nossiter
Lovely meal, there were 4 of us and we all enjoyed the food, really wonderful. Staff very helpful Will definitely go back again.
Food was lovely and the waitresses were really helpful, but it was a little slow. We waited 20 for a charcuterie starter, then another 30 minutes for our lunch. We weren’t in a rush, but it felt a little longer than it needed to be.
Have Sunday lunch most weeks and this is a very good Sunday lunch.
Love the new look after the restoration . Staff very friendly and worked hard to serve a full restaurant including our table of 13. The food was beautiful. Can recommend the black pudding scotch egg starter. We have asked for custard to come with the Bramley apple and Black berry crumble. Great place. Well done everyone
We had a very tasty and enjoyable Sunday lunch, with very generous portions.
We eat at the Forge regularly and have watched it grow stronger and stronger over the last 18 months. It was lovely to hear a range of specials on the menu and to sample a chateaubriand which was first class. Scallop and mushroom starter was elegant and delicious too. The atmosphere is warm and unpretentious; service standards were high last night.
First class in a great village everybody should come and try it
Been there a few times and were very pleased with everything but last time was really dissapointing. The service was very slow , waiting 20minutes for a glass of wine and at the end 20 minutes for the bill with the place not even being crowded. The inside was cold and the fireplace with no fire . Lastly , food not value for the money we paid. I'm afraid not going back.
Beautiful restaurant, nice vibes. The food is somewhat lacking however and the service is slow.
The young waiter and wine waitress were efficient and very pleasant and the meals were superb
Fantastic reasonably priced food and wine, great service, lovely building. Overall very good.
Simply WOW. Sunday lunch was just amazing and great value. Starter Main and dessert were delicious and all fresh ingredients. Definitely recommended
Lovely restaurant,food was amazing
The food is always amazing. My only small gripe would be service. Drinks order not taken before food order and had to ask to order drinks after waiting for a while. It’s not often you’re asked during service if you’d like more drinks, it’s only if we catch a server as they’re passing or when food arrives at the table.
Meal was perfect as it has been every time we have visited, staff are excellent and the service is top notch.
Very attentive staff
Exellent food at a very reasonable price. We’ll be back again soon.
Service at the forge seemed to be quite slow but the food was very nice, one small point was that the chips, that came with the steak, appeared not to be freshly fried.... perhaps a bowl of mash would have been a better accompaniment Other than that small point..... it was a very enjoyable evening
Love it here. I love how cozy it is and the food is amazing. Great staff
Excellent food and service to match
