About The Fat Lamb
“Good Food starts with great produce” says Chef Martin James. “We cook with the best our farmers and growers provide and believe that this is the only true way to cook.”
The Fat Lamb showcases New Zealand produce in a wholesome, tasty and generous way – ‘the kiwi way’. The menu combines quality kiwi ingredients with an international influence of flavours to give you a great New Zealand food experience.
At the The Fat Lamb we offer a domestic only wine and craft beer list which allows us to concentrate on sourcing special and unique products from smaller producers to showcase the diversity and regionality of our country.
Join us at The Fat Lamb where we believe that the more you know the history and story of food – the better it tastes.
We each had a different lamb dish and both were delicious. Best lamb we ever had.
Meal and service was perfect throughout the whole night, although the drinks weren’t cold and had flat fizzy too.
Found this gem tuck half way up Ballarat Street on an evening stroll, checked out the menu and without a doubt I know the food would be amazing. Their assistant manager Connor walked us through the menu and recommended a few of the dishes. Most of the dishes are lamb but there’s the option of fish, beef and vegetarian. We came back for dinner the following night, loved everything that was served. We order lamb ribs (2 pieces each, could have done with a few more and some more of the apples), lamb rack and lamb ragu pappardelle. The pasta was freshly made! Which was a bonus to be honest because some restaurants just do store bought! We also ordered dessert...we were so full couldn’t fit in anything more than two, ended sharing them. I asked Connor the day before if they could put a candle on the dessert as it was my birthday, so when we arrived, Champange on the house and there was a card from to the team to wish me a happy birthday. I really appreciate that as you don’t get this type of thoughtful service else where. We throughly enjoyed our evening, I would recommend this place to anyone who’s visiting Queenstown and love a home cooked meal. Do ask for a seat on the balcony (is not open air) but you get a good view of the mountains and can see the colors changes as the sun goes down. Thank you again team x I hope to see you again soon.
Awesome service, great food. Positive vibe from the staff.
Best restaurant in town, and the best lamb ever!
Fresh, well cooked and delicious food. Best chips I have eaten in a decade and great service from Mitch. Love the dessert cocktails too.
Service was amazing and the food is delicious.
Unfortunately the lamb was not warm enough using a sous vide machine you need to insure when it goes on the grill it increases the temperature and the meet is hot . For us it was not hot and was disappointed. Spending that type of money of cool food is not good enough. The service from the staff was great and wine was very good quality.
Lamb shoulder slow cooked with carrots fennel potatoes and garlics had been overcooked severely to the point where parts were inedible
We arrived yesterday in Queenstown and looked for a nice place with good meals. It was amazing!! Fantastic atmosphere, delicious meals and a very good service. Thank you very much for a nice evening at your site.
Our group dined at The Fat Lamb and loved it. The food was spot on, quick service especially for a large group. Looking forward to returning!
Absolutely fantastic, the best lamb I have ever had, will be back.
Really impressed. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was great. All dishes we ordered were delicious - with the lamb options being particularly good. The prices ranged depending on what was ordered but on the whole, prices were in line with prices for Queenstown. We had a fantastic evening at The Fat Lamb and would definitely return here
Staff were fantastic, food was amazing.
It was a cold, rainy Sunday evening when we entered The Fat Lamb and were warmly welcomed by Heaven (that's her real name). As it was only 6:30 we were shown the whole restaurant and given our choice of literally any table we wanted. Having selected a cosy booth downstairs near the open fire with a view of the passing parade along the mall outside, we were given water, food and drinks menus. There are so many delicious choices on the menu, but finally we decided to share the 900gm, 6 hour slow cooked, herb encrusted shoulder of lamb which comes with white onions, carrots, fennel bulbs, roast potatoes and jus. Absolutely mouth-wateringly delicious. The lamb just fell off the bone and the flavour was sublime. We enjoyed it first with a glass each of local Pinot Noir and then with a glass each of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, franc, malbec. Wine by the glass prices were very reasonable ($12 and $13.50) compared with the $20+ per glass of some other restaurants. The whole evening was thoroughly delightful and I sincerely recommend it to anyone looking for a memorable meal. You will not be disappointed.
First time there and we will come back. Attentive staff and food selection is excellent. Meals were very good.
Very kind and professional staff, delicious food and drinks. We live in Queenstown and have family visiting us. They wanted to try the world famous NZ lamb and weren’t disappointed. We ordered lamb Shoulder and fish and chips. Both were great. Thanks, guys
You will not be disappointed visiting the fat lamb. The food is truly outstanding and the staff are firendly. We can't wait to go back.
We dinned on first table, enjoyed jalapeño poppers to start, lamb shoulder as a main, the food was excellent, staff very attentive. We sat downstairs in a very comfortable booth, highly recommend The Fat Lamb.
Dinner was lovely. Service prompt and friendly. Kids meals arrived first which rates highly with me. Would definitely go again.
My family really enjoyed the fantastic food experience, and the staff were really lovely and especially accommodating of our young children. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Would definitely return. The food was amazing, the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed and the service was fantastic. (We shared the lamb shoulder and started with jalapeno peppers and the best garlic bread I've ever had!)
Had a great evening! Had the lamb ragu pappardelle and it was amazing, would recommend putting this on the main menu! The gold rush cocktail was a hit and the mushroom soup amazing as well!
