About Scotch Malt Whisky Society - Queen Street
The Dining Room at 28 Queen Street welcomes new faces and old friends with traditional fine dining paired with culinary invention, expertly prepared by our chef Ryan Turner. Enjoy distinguished flavours with personable service in our relaxed, refined Georgian dining room.
A magical lunch experience, perched at a table in one of three towering (original) sash windows overlooking Queen Street Gardens. The food was consistently superb, from and amuse bouche followed by bread and airy harissa, to starters, lamb mains (fantastic layered confit potato) and elegant desert. Witty yet discreet service. The Dining Room is an exceptionally rare opportunity in Edinburgh, London or Dublin to eat on the piano nobile of a Georgian townhouse, and is without question the best conversion anywhere that is respectful of the house’s 18th-century character while expressing a fresh, contemporary aesthetic - all delivered with a deceptively light touch. The experience comes with the added boon of an exhilarating assent up the original cantilevered staircase. What a shame if the rumours of closure of this very special place next year come to pass. We need more of this quality, not more bar stools and dressed-up slate fodder. For now, top marks.
hi I brought 22 Paramedics from Dublin to the Edinburgh Military Tattoo we stopped off at the Whisky society on Friday 23rd August my colleagues were overwhelmed with the service and professionalism and the crack [fun] with your staff. A personal thank you to Hana / Alan and the other bar man for the great time we had on the day it made our trip very special and truly Scottish [ As a Scotsman it made me very proud ] keep up the excellent work guys
Great food as ever
great food and service
The service was fantastic and the whisky tasting experience was wonderful. The standard of the food didn't quite match this. We ordered the Charcuterie board to share and the 'artisan bread', as specified on the menu, tasted a bit damp and stale unfortunately. The cuts of cheese were very small too! Overall, however, we very much enjoyed ourselves.
Food was excellent. Choices were diverse and interesting. The waiter was knowledgable with a wonderful sense of humor. We were entertained while eating quite a delicious meal.
A disappointing visit- we came last year during the Festival (we live in Sheffield), and had a great experience, so this year we brought a friend for his 60th birthday treat. When we arrived we were told that the main dining room was in use for a private function, so we would be in the side room. If I had been told this when (or after) I had booked, I would have changed the booking, as a great deal of the experience is being in your lovely main dining room. The side room is characterless, and we felt very much sidelined. First of all we got different menus, with some different dishes on each. When we sorted that out, we ordered a bottle of red wine for over £40 (available in the shops for £16, so a steep mark-up) and a glass of white wine. They should have arrived before the first course, but they did not, and when the red arrived I had to ask again for the white wine. Then I was told the one I asked for was unavailable, so had to choose again and wait again. We had side plates, so were expecting to be offered bread - but no. We had to ask near the end of the main course. Either offer bread, or don't put out side plates! We were served by two people, and there was some confusion over who was serving us. The food was good, but the service not as good as last time - the servers were pleasant (especially the chap), but all in all it was not the experience we expected for a bill of £220 (including a £20 tip we left in cash).
We arrived early but this wasn't a problem and was handled with professionalism and charm
Fantastic service and great food
A delightful experience.
This is the best value for money fine dining in Edinburgh . I just cant believe that the restaurant (not the bar or SMWS) is to close in January 2020. It will be a very sad loss to the Edinburgh dinning scene.
Our guests were from Sussex and the experience SMWS offers is quite unique for atmosphere, quality food and excellent service. A wee tipple over a coffee in the members lounge rounds off the evening very nicely. Thank you.
Our server was a sweet French girl who was very knowledgeable. I didn’t catch her name.
Fantastic meal and service, my guests and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Flavours were outstanding throughout the meal as was the service. We will return again, and again.
It was a great evening.
One of the best meals we've ever had. Truly fantastic. While my husband and brother-in-law ordered the whiskey pairings up front, my sister-in-law and I were hesitant as we're not as adventurous with different whisky varieties as they are. After the first course though, we requested the whiskey pairings with each course. How the food altered what you were tasting in the whisky was fascinating (and delicious), and we were total converts. Amazing! Thank you!
Great place, great food and of course great whisky from SMWS.
Food, Drink and Staff were too notch
Lovely meal, relaxing atmosphere and attentive and knowledgeable staff. Top notch.
Really enjoyed our meal.Very special.
I visited the dining room for my birthday. The kaleidoscope bar, the members room and the restaurant were all fantastic. The staff were helpful and exceptionally knowledgeable and really enhanced the experience. I've already recommended it to friends and will be back the next time I am in Edinburgh.
A really lovely evening with fantastic food, very generous paired drinks, and knowledgeable, friendly staff. We both felt like we were really treated, and would love to return again.
Wonderful food and excellent service in beautiful surroundings!
Excellent food and very attentive service.
First time at The Dining Room and it was brilliant. Food was exquisite and service impeccable. Atmosphere was exactly right - not stuffy at all! Will heartily recommend.
Thank you for your feedback, we are happy to know that you have a pleasant time in our restaurant. We hope to see you again very soon. Best regards
