About The Culpeper
So this is exactly what you think of when you think of The Culpeper. It’s light and bright until night and then it’s bright and light until later.
It’s about relaxing; hanging with a bunch of friends or the good crew from the office. It’s ‘grab some lunch’ but with a hazy plan about what’s on this afternoon; it’s a cocktail or two after five and a totally easy dinner kind of thing.
We’re right on the water’s edge so you know it’s going to be ‘at ease’. Our owner thinks we’re here to celebrate food, fun and friends; we think we’re here for a good time (and a long time)…
Remember every good time is made up of moments. At The Culpeper, making the most of the moment is up to you.
We enjoyed the evening.
I'd been a couple of times before, including my birthday earlier this year, and thought it would be a great place to take an eclectic mix of 16 work colleagues for dinner. They all really enjoyed it, thanked me for taking them there and all want to come back again with their friends and family!
Friendly staff, great food and great view! Fantastic!
chicken salad and shellfish bowel are very nice.
Delicious food !!
The Service was fantastic, and the sharing platter was great!
Always an amazing dining experience at the Culpeper. Excellent service and delicious food. Great social atmosphere.
Great food & service! Was there in the Valentine's day, so the restaurant was very busy. But the food & service were excellent.
Great place, amazing food, got a great seat outdoors. Some items ordered were slightly slow to arrive, understandable as it was a busy Monday, but the items were soon followed up by the friendly, attentive and quick response staff. - No real issues there, hence the 5 star rating on service. Look forward to dining here again.
Awesome job, great service. Thanks!
The service was fabulous and so was the food. The Brisket and Pulled pork were just amazing!!! The ribs were tough and chewy but the sauce on them was ok. The doughnut we won't be ordering again, the chocolate sauce was too bitter and the balance of flavors between the doughnut, the cinnamon power and the sauce was just all off. Too much bitterness and no sweetness at all. We will definitely be back again through for some more brisket, pulled pork and cornbread!
Great food, good service, nice location by the water.
The food was good, but the amount of food was poor compare to value for money. Also, poor service☹️
Overall an average dining experience mainly because of the following: menu was dirty inside- not a good first impression. My culpepper smash cocktail was mostly full of ice, certainly not worth $18!! Also our waitress was attentive to begin with but then never saw her & we weren’t even offered dessert.
amazing place to catch up with friends over great food
Great food and definitely worth the money.
Great option for a group dinner
I brought guests last night from out of town to the restaurant for dinner. The greeting was nice and we were sat down and drinks order taken, followed shortly after by the food order. Table was pleasant, presentation was nice and the environment is very pleasant. However, after singing the restaurants praises to my guests the food arrived. I have no issue with the food quality at all, it is very good. The issue is that relative to the cost the value for money is really poor. One guest ordered the pork belly and two of us the Culpeper platter. The pork belly was really good, but it's served on a plate in such a way that it appears that the kitchen forgot to finish it. There was no advice given to my guest at the time of ordering that it came with no sides at all and would he like to order one? That's just good waiting skill. You're taking the order of a solid 6'4" man for a main course and you know that the portion size is really quite small and just suggesting a side order would really have helped, because he was too embarrassed to say he was still ravenous after the dish. The platter food was very good. The issue I have is that you have to just add a bit more guys. I don't think a reasonable person would expect 12 ribs and half a kilo of brisket, but to charge $40 and be given two small ribs with almost no meat on them, and one piece of brisket is farcical. When I asked the Maitre D if there had perhaps been an error he attempted to justify it by say that "you did also get fries and some pulled pork!" This is of course correct and he was not rude at all, but a small bowl of fried potatoes for two and a small bowl of average pulled pork just does not add up to $40. People come for the reputation of the meat, not the fries. Even if there were 3 or 4 ribs each considering the size, and a couple of pieces of brisket I think that would be fair and reasonable. As it is I couldn't seriously recommend Culpeper other than perhaps for your happy hour. Lastly I'm afraid I have to be critical overall of the service. I've owned hotels and worked in some of the best in the world. It doesn't take much to turn an average experience into a great one just with the service, and even that could've changed the my feelings about the restaurant after leaving. After the greeting and ordering, no one approached the table again inside an hour and three quarters! Not to ask if the meal was satisfactory, never to offer another drink or more food. If nothing else, as a business you're losing money just on that, before you even consider if that was good service? The waiting staff spent regular amounts of time just standing by the door or the service hatches talking, and we never saw the maître d walk the tables once talking to anyone outside, something fundamental to the role as the host. Although this is a negative review, there are opportunities to greatly improve here, perhaps ignored during the tourist season because repeat custom may not appear to be an important consideration with so much transient custom. However, long term even if it didn't affect the financial performance significantly, it is performance well below what it could be for a restaurant in such a prime location. You can do better. cheers Jock
Absolutely 5* experience all-round. Staff were polite engaging and professional. Food was 1st class, best ribs and chicken wings ever!! 😊😊
Happy hour is great value for money! Food is also really good and great service :)
Food ans service were great. Our waitress was amazing. Only comment would be regarding the ribs. They tastes delicious but after a while the salt kicked in and we couldn't finish them.
Great service great food and amazing cocktails....the only issue was my vegetarian friend felt like she was eating a full cauliflower every time.....
Very good service. Pleasant position on wharf. Just don't order the ribs: grossly overcooked and very dry.
Fun evening with a group of friends. We all thoroughly enjoyed the food and atmosphere of The Culpeper. Service was fantastic - overall it made for a fun, relaxed evening. Would definitely go back.
Excellent and very economical meal at Culpeper. This is a first time for us as it was a quick meal for The Breakers game. Even though it was a bit noisy, the food was very good and the service by the girls were exceptional. Highly recommend.
