About The Crown and Castle
The Crown and Castle is a restaurant with rooms and good quality, unpretentious food is at the heart of what we offer. With 2 AA rosettes, the 2018 Good Hotel Guide’s Editor’s Choice for Restaurant with Rooms and a Sawday’s award for Fabulous food, guests often cite the restaurant as a major reason for staying with us. Our wine list also wins many plaudits in the guides, not least for the reasonable prices.
Loved the food, the atmosphere and the Christmas decorations. The Festive menu had nice little extra touches - loved the mince pie with coffee at the end . Loved the extras on the Christmas pud too !
As we anticipated, based on previous experience, we enjoyed an excellent 3 course lunch.
As always a lovely Sunday lunch. Thank you.
Great evening with fantastic food. A few mistakes made on the Service .
Food was very good although I thought it was a bit pricey for a roast. The Resturant was soulless and in need of a refurb.
Wonderful food, lovely table and excellent service. Thank you for a perfect evening.
I would highly recommend a visit. Delicious food. Very welcoming staff who are attentive to their guests. Lots of great personal touches that make a visit very enjoyable.
This was the best meal that we have had for at least two years and prompted us to book a weekend break before Christmas.
Thoroughly enjoyable meal with friends. Excellent food - lots of local produce. Very good service.
We really enjoyed our meal. Everything was perfect. Thank you for helping us to have a lovely evening.
Superb waiter service in a relaxed atmosphere. Delicious main and aperitif and sorbet. Personally I found the starter a little disappointing, the Bon Bon was delicious but rabbit tough and squash very rubbery. Broth needed a little more depth in flavour. Fried food on a liquid always goes soggy.
Food choice was limited and when served was not tasty nor well cooked Skatewing overcooked Vegetarian option - too bulky Starters - oily deep fried fish Deserts were best thing No value for a lot of money Things need to change before I go back - the local pub grub is better
Dinner was ok - rather bland starters (rabbit & salmon) but pork main was good. Overall it was a pleasant enough experience but we can’t help but be rather sad that a favourite venue has been so obviously undermined by cost cutting and an inevitable slide to lower standards than was once so evident iunder the previous owners.
Coupled with the "Restaurant with Rooms" concept, our experience was amazing - superb food, interesting menus, wine list excellent with wine recommendation matching dishes on the main menu. The service was also attentive and efficient. Slight under-cooking of the baked skate was quickly rectified to our satisfaction. Full marks!
Having enjoyed excellent meals in the past Sunday's roast beef was an utter disappointment, cold hard Yorkshire's greasy potatoes that resisted cutting and cold veg. New meals were produced which were a little better but this gesture was spoiled as the meat was clearly the original offering warmed in hot gravy. The cost of the mains were deducted from the bill and we were told that the situation would be reported to the management and that I could expect an email so far nothing. Thus I can only surmise that the Crown is happy to slide into mediocrity.
We love the Crown and Castle and travelled over from Oxford for Saturday lunch (and a couple of local visits!). The food was lovely as ever and service excellent, though we didn’t like the ‘new’ menu format (might not be new but we haven’t been for a few months). Just listing ingredients didn’t really entice - a shame as the dishes were more appealing than they often seemed... The atmosphere on this occasion was quiet as it was a Saturday in October - but is usually much livelier. Looking forward to our next visit (hopefully to stay over again next time...).
Wonderful service, especially for my husband who is gluten free. Reminded me of meals in hotels with my parents when I was a child. I think I’d have been more than happy with a meal that wasn’t trying to be too ‘clever’. My seafood plate didn’t need the taramasalata. Spinach cannelloni was delicious. My husbands potato terrine starter was a bit peculiar, but his mackerel was lovely. We both loved the spirals of kale. Can I just add that the breakfasts were superb. Once again, such friendly staff, and was pleasant to have a gap between courses, while everything was freshly cooked.
Unfortunately, due to extreme weather conditions, the restaurant was very quiet for Sunday lunch, but despite the rain and the subsequent problems that it caused (leaks in the roof), the staff still provided a really lovely lunch. The food was excellent and service very friendly. We will definitely return.
another great restaurant in Orford.
The cuisine never fails to please Great atmosphere that strikes you when walking into the bar The waitresses and waiter are a delight Have booked to return 15th December 2019
Never delivered on expectations suggested by the pricing. Lobster ravioli was dry and overly firm which certainly shouldn’t be the case. Could do better!!
A disappointment all round.
My steak was tough and had to be replaced. Service was good. Enjoyed the fish.
Being local and having been for Sunday lunch several times and always had a great meal I was disappointed last night. The standard of cooking seems to have diteriorated. My starter of ham peas and apple was quite tasty but SO small also the plate was a bit wet so I don’t think the peas had been drained enough. The lamb rump main was tough and the fat not rendered, served pink as asked but not seasoned and a bit tasteless. The addition of 4 anchovy fillets was not a good addition as just placed on top of lamb. When I have had anchovies with lamb they have been chopped finely and used as a seasoning which works better. My husband had something very salty with his cold fish platter I think it was supposed to be samphire! Didn’t look or taste like samphire we have had in the past. Such a shame because Sunday lunch is usually excellent and good value for money. As it was a meal for our daughter returning to university I didn’t want to speak to the manager. I’m not sure I would be willing to return until I start hearing things improved. Sorry to be negative about a previously loved restaurant.
Well done to all your staff, particularly your chef.
