I booked The Crooked Well for my mum's birthday because we have been many times and know it is very good but when we arrived on a Friday lunchtime (normally packed) it was dead, we were the only table, there was no music. On the menu there were no olives (?basic) only one seabass because the delivery had not arrived (??) kids meals came out with adult mains not starters (kids should always be the served first) the pork chops we ordered were not cooked well...the fat was white and chewy (basically the whole thing not been cooked enough) the dover sole with samphire was beyond salty. We didn't bother ordering dessert. The only saving grace was the waitress who, although serving on her own, was very sweet and did her best throughout the meal. Very disappointing and not the lunch I had expected. Unlikely to return. Such a shame.
Really lovely, warm atmosphere.. Lively being a thursday. The staff were really welcoming and responsive/on it - they knew the menu well and were super helpful. They allowed us to enjoy a drink in the bar on arrival - we weren't rushed to our table but they remembered we were there and judged it well seeing us finish our aperitif and then taking us to our table. We felt really looked after and were offered a great deal on an after dinner espresso martini - I was keen for it but my friend wasn't! - I liked the touch. I'd recommend it and definitely go again.
Good food, reasonable prices, lovely wine list and competent service. The biggest issue we had was noise. The acoustics in the restaurant allow voices to carry and become amplified. It becomes difficult to have an intimate conversation with your dinner companions. Add a table of raucous young men seated nearby and it was hopeless...
Service initially a little slow but food and atmosphere more than make up for it.
Get there early they ran out of Yorkshire puds!
We had a table reservation for 3pm but unfortunately had to wait 15 minutes for our table. The food was good but not as good as I thought it'd be considering all the awards. The fish pie was mostly potato and not alot of fish. Service was slow. Admittedly it was a busy sunday but they should be used to this.
Delicious food and perfect for a nice boozy Sunday lunch with friends.
Nice pub with lovely decor. Attended for Sunday lunch with my mother in law. Service was erratic at the bar and when we sat for dinner. We were looked after by 4 different people throughout the meal. Has to wait for wine glasses which were then warm. We asked for them to be chilled and had to do this ourselves with ice. Service at the bar was slow although it wasn’t particularly busy. The dinner was nice but cold with only two vegetable accompaniments between the two of us and 1&1/2 small potatoes. No accoutrements, we had to request salt and pepper, mustard, etc. Other than that it’s a pleasant place to eat and drink. I might swerve a Sunday roast but will certainly try mid-week or on a Saturday evening.
As always, delicious food and friendly, helpful service. If you’re looking for a top quality meal in a pub setting around the Camberwell area you won’t go far wrong here. The restaurant is off to the side so it feels like you’re separated from the actual bar.
Chicken and trimmings outstanding, “Jealous Sisters” Pinot excellent, service decent enough but needed extra hands - just a bit frantic. Marked down because the roast silverside was as tough as leather: it’s not a roasting cut, so why try - just buy topside or, better, sirloin, and charge a bit more. However, generally v. happy, will return.
Overall very nice visit, we had a good time. Food was great and the place was very comfortable. Positives: Lovely décor and surroundings Friendly and open service Very tasty food, esp the raspberry and white chocolate tart, calamari and pork and tuna starters Very accommodating for a large group Negatives: Started clearing food too quickly which was a little uncomfortable Two people had to wait longer for their starter as it was incorrect Barrata starter said it comes with flatbread but came with poppadum crisp like bread instead. Asked for sparkling water for the table but were given still and only realised when too late so had to get another round of sparkling water ordered. One person got the wrong drink, not what they ordered.
One of the best roasts we have had in a long time, great food and service, we will be back!
A lovely lunch in a vibrant pub dining room with very good service. Great for family and friend groups. Delicious Sunday roasts.
Lovely staff and delicious food. We were on trying out First Table for the first time so excellent value. Will definitely be back as it is very local to us.
I felt the pasta starter at £9+ was somewhat over priced. Two pieces of tortellini- but everything was of a high quality. Staff were excellent and I’ll always recommend !
Great food, and staff - just slightly slow service.
We had a really great night, felt very welcomed by the staff and enjoyed the food
Went for the roast lamb to share. I thought it was on the small side for the price. It was a big bone :( That said, it was really tasty.
We have been coming to the Crooked Well for years & it is consistently excellent. We have had some private parties here too & can never fault the food, attentive service and atmosphere. Our favourite restaurant in South London.
good as always ! my only thing is that yesterday they run out of nut roast at 2 pm... which meant that the only veg option in the roast menus was unavailable for all the people of the second half of the lunch turn.. :(
The Crooked Well is consistently great. The music is always at a volume that allows you to have a conversation - a rare thing! The menu is delicious and the wine list has some great and varied choices.
I've been coming here for years as a local member of staff from the hospital. I was disappointed to see that you have removed the lunch time menu (which used to provide excellent value and good quality food, with a quick turn-around). I was forced to order larger main course items that I didn't really want, which were sadly of poor quality compared to the normal standard and somewhat overpriced.
Great dinner- helpful staff, good food, nice place. Prices reasonable too. Recommended.
