About The Cowpers Oak
We’re a village pub. Not a bar, not a restaurant, not even a gastropub, whatever that is. Just a great village pub – a cosy place where you’ll find roaring log fires, creeping purple wisteria around the lattice windows, muddy boots at the door, and local pub food cooked from scratch by the very brilliant Daniel.
We use the freshest fruit, vegetables (apart from our British frozen peas) and herbs we can get our hands on. Our head chef, Daniel Gibbons, swears by fresh, local produce and makes a mean Scotch egg with eggs produced from our own hens.
As always, warm and friendly service.
Very enjoyable lunch
Excellent food and wonderful service - we all had a lovely evening thank you
Atmosphere - the fire was not lit, even though it was Valentine's Day and it would have been very romantic if it had been lit. Service - when the starter was delivered, the waitress dropped one of my girlfriend's halloumi chips on the table, so the waitress took the plate back to get a new chip, but it meant my starter was on the table and my girlfriend's was not. So my food was getting cold and she could not eat anything as there was nothing for her on the table. Food & Drink - my girlfriend ordered Lemon and Lime and it would have been nicer if there was a fresh slice of lemon or lime in her pint glass (as there was nothing fresh now).
It was a lovely place to spend time with family and enjoy good food and wine.
The ginger pudding with caramel sauce and honeycomb ice cream is the best dessert I've had in years and coming from a chocoholic who doesn't like particularly ginger that is a huge compliment!
Lovely country pub serving delicious meals, with a great atmosphere and very friendly staff-would highly recommend!
Great Sunday lunch in a lovely cosy village setting and all the staff were very friendly
Enjoyable family meal in a bar with great atmosphere.
Good food and helpful staff. Will go there again
Whitebait soggy. Pie filled with thick tasteless sauce and barely any meat, basically inedible. Compensation of 1 starter free of charge was almost an insult! The bottle of Rioja was very nice though
We’ve booked a table again as lovely place food and atmosphere.
Excellent service. Perfect amount of interaction. Nothing was too much trouble. Great menu with lots of choice for both adults and children. The food was very nice.
A fantastic New Years evening celebration, thank you!
Lovely village pub.
Lovely pub, nice atmosphere and friendly helpful staff. The food and drinks are pretty good too! We always enjoy our visits and will continue to do so.
friendly staff , good food and nice Christmas decorations appropriate to the age of the pub. We shall return.
Unfortunately on the evening we came so did a very loud party which seemed to take over one side of the pub, I’m all for people having a good time but banging hammers on tables and shouting at each other all night is not really enjoyable unless you are in the party with them. The service was very slow and we in fact had to remind the staff we were still there waiting on courses, not once were we offered more drinks and in the end after our meal we left to go to another out to continue our evening. Real shame as I have been before and the service was much better
Live music in the front bar so understand being in the rear restaurant, which wasn’t very atmospheric. Still a lovely pub, good food and nice people serving you. 👍
A lovely meal, friendly staff and great atmosphere on a cold December day!
The Cowpers Oak is the heart of an amazing village and never disappoints. I drag my team down from Derby once a year for a meeting at my place followed by lunch at the Cowpers. A perfect atmosphere for team bonding, and I’ve never had a complaint! Food, service, atmosphere are all superb. Two roaring fires in the winter are the cherry on the cake. Highly recommended :)
Great atmosphere and family friendly.
Good choice of freshly cooked food, very tasty and decent value for money. Warm, friendly "proper" pub atmosphere, which is so rarely found these days. And that's why we keep returning! Very nice staff, too.
Always have a good meal and good service here
Lunch time visit, made very welcome, nice warm fire, venue ideal to meet up with friends for a chat & lunch. Being a Tuesday lunch the pub was quiet so a little difficult to comment regarding atmosphere. This suited us as we hadn't had a meet up for over 6months so were able to chat before and after our excellent lunch. Three of us had white bait starters all commented on the large helpings and nicely presented. Then the same three all had the fish, chips, and mushy peas. Again an excellent choice, good size cod and cooked to perfection. The fourth my wife had a main course white bait, which I was informed was excellent also, but a very large plateful which she struggled to finish. Both the males had two real ales which was tasty and well kept. The ladies had wine for one and water for the other one. Staff were very pleasant and not in anyway pushy. Our bill for both food, and drinks was £89.48 which is about normal & reasonable value for money. This is our 3rd visit to The Cowpers Oak, and there will certainly be a fourth.
