About The Column Room Restaurant
The Column Room Restaurant at Hestercombe offers quintessentially British afternoon teas and lunches from the prettiest room in Hestercombe House. Originally the sitting room of the Portman family, you can enjoy stunning views over the Formal Gardens of the Victorian Terrace and Great Plat while you sip your loose leaf tea, just as they would in the late 19th century.
Only the freshest, most vibrant ingredients are chosen for the Column Room - find our regularly changing menu on our website.
I made a reservation to treat a friend to a birthday lunch. We were not disappointed, we were given a table with a perfect view of the gardens. The menu was impressive and, my friends request to have a starter changed to a main course was not a problem for the chef, who presented a very comprehensive main course of his scallop dish. We finished off with a wonderful chocolate brioche bread and butter pudding served with marmalade ice cream which, had just the right amount of tartness to compliment the rich chocolate brioche. The difficult issue then, was whether to work off our superb lunch with a stroll through the gardens or, return to the book shop to gently peruse the excellent shelves. The Column Room is a wonderful choice to celebrate a special occasion.
Went for an afternoon tea for a surprise for my friend, they allowed as to go earlier and set the table up with birthday bits, the lady serving was so lovely, food was just amazing!!!!
Lovely afternoon tea in a beautiful setting. Would recommend and will definitely come back again.
We had a lovely afternoon tea in the restaurant, the service was brilliant, the food was fantastic and we had a table next to the window with the views of the garden. We had a few ‘fussy’ requests in which the restaurant was very accommodating. Thank you! We’ll definitely be back.
We’ve been coming for a birthday treat every year for last few years this time we thought traditional cream tea was disappointing but the service as always was amazing and Jess the waitress was really lovely and very professional x
Visited for afternoon tea as a birthday surprise for a friend. It was perfect. We had a delicious feast - lots of it locally sourced - overlooking the stunning gardens, and were well looked after by staff. It all made for a great occasion and lovely memories. Can't recommend highly enough.
Perhaps another option on the main menu would be good, slightly limited. Other than that all was very good
Magical location, matched by excellent service and a varied and interesting menu is only slightly marred by the London pricing which was just under £40 a head for two courses plus wine. Add to that the garden ticket entry and it's an expensive experience.
Excellent afternoon tea and the service was fantastic. I would highly recommend
I booked a table to celebrate my friend’s birthday. The staff were so helpful and couldn’t be any more friendly! They were great with accommodating for children and babies! And they helped with surprising my friend with a cake... they were fantastic! Most definitely coming back for any special occasion.
Very happy with the service and the waitress was superb, very attentive but not to over the top. We visited on Friday afternoon for lunch.
Lovely afternoon. Asked for and was given a table by the window to celebrate a friend's birthday. Afternoon tea was delicious and Maddie, the waitress, a delightful young lady whose service was exemplary.
Excellent meal in very relaxing surroundings.
The food was excellent and the venue itself was lovely, we had an amazing view over the gardens while we were dining. Our server was very friendly and helpful, a credit to the establishment. We'll definitely be coming back soon!
We did have a lovely visit, but there was quite a long wait for our food to arrive, when it did, it was very nice.
We had afternoon tea & it was really lovely. The room is light & airy with a nice atmosphere & the food was delicious. Friendly service too.
Fantastic day out! Beautiful views! The food in the column restaurant was delicious (the lamb dish especially), the portion sizes were worth the money and also managed to buy a few lovely plants on the way out! Will be back!
We all enjoyed the unusual brunch menu. Each option was very tasty. Staff attentive. Excellent view of the gardens. Good value for money particularly as having brunch gave us half price entry to the house and gardens.
Really enjoyed our afternoon tea. Very attentive friendly staff. Great view of the gardens from the room
We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch on Sunday - the food and service were excellent and our lovely waitress was very friendly and helpful. The view from our window table was stunning even on a rainy day. The only think lacking was some sort of ambience - a little soft background music wouldn’t go amiss (especially as there, on display in the middle of the room, is a beautiful grand piano!)
Generally the paintwork on the windows is poor and spoils the look of the room. Scones good and light, tasted very fresh. Could have more plants as shown in the photos on the walls to add Edwardian atmosphere.
Great menu choice. Staff very attentive, lots of drinks options on offer.
Very pleasant. Perhaps some dainty cups and pretty teapot would enhance the experience.
Great service would have appreciated the option to have a window view when booking as we ended up in the far corner looking at the wall. Would come more often just for food if I didn’t have to pay entrance fee as well. Great experience overall would come again.
My first visit and I really enjoyed it!! It’s obviously a work in progress but the Column restaurant was a very pleasant find! Good luck with your future plans!
