About The Cock Pub & Kitchen
Bringing together the true pub values of great beer and entertainment alongside a modern dining experience
— ABOUT US —
It is the oldest alehouse in the town and is said to have been an Ongar landmark since 1580. The earliest written evidence is from 1766 when it was purchased from Richard Bennett. The deed of sale lists several buildings and outhouses, including a brew house as alehouses often did their own brewing at that time. In 1863, the Post Office Directory shows ownership had passed to Francis Starkey. C S Gray & Sons took over the lease in 1872, enlarged and improved the building, and agreed to purchase the property for £600 on Francis Starkey's death in 1884. The appearance of the building suggests that it dates from the 19th Century but this could of course conceal an earlier building.
Jack trained as a chef in Cornwall and, after moving to Ongar to work at Smiths Restaurant, fell in love with the town. After managing Alec’s Restaurant for over eight years, he is delighted to be back in Ongar to run The Cock.
Jack and his dynamic team aim to bring together the true pub values of great beer and entertainment alongside a modern dining experience. You will find West End style food and British pub classics next to each other on our seasonal menu.
We are delighted to be working alongside Gray & Sons. Established in 1828, this family run business owns 50 public houses across the County of Essex.
We hope you enjoy your visit.
Service was terrible, completely understaffed. It’s a real shame as the food is lovely.
Amazing food, can’t wait to come back. Only marked the service down as had a very long wait for desert, was hard to find a waiter to ask as was very busy, and due to convos didn’t want to wander around the restaurant, ended up asking the manager who said she would check, but we never heard from her again. Finally got hold of our original waitress who chased the order up.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere and fab staff. Will keep returning! Fish cooked to perfection and the Asian spin on some of the dishes are a delight. Great wine selection, friendly atmosphere, comfortable surroundings.
Food, wine, service. All excellent.
We will definitely be back
What a great evening following lockdown. How do you do it. All of you at the Cock made everything seem back to normal. Thank you all.. this is not an after though but the food was superb.
Excellent lunch exceeded expectations our expectations
Our first time. Friendly & attentive staff, but not overly attentive. Great food & bar area. We will be back in December, huge thanks
Had our last meal out before second lockdown. So glad we did ,our meals where superb as usual. I had the best ribeye my husband had Halibut that was perfectly cooked. We will certainly be back as soon as this month is over. Keep safe and well all of you at the Cock xx
Fabulous atmosphere on your last night .
Great place . Definitely going back
food was fantastic, cant wait to eat there again.
Best roast potatoes ever
Amazing food and loved the interior of the pub, will definitely be going back!
The meal as per usual was fantastic. The service and the staff were great made you feel wanted. Please try it for yourselves you won't be disappointed.
Please don't change anything in your restaurant it fabulous.
The food is really very good and the restaurant is understandably expensive because of it. I would personally like to see the addition of one or two less expensive options to the menu. Service couldn’t be faulted and we will definitely return. However not as often as we would if it were a little less expensive. We have recommended to several friends on the basis of the service, the decor and the quality of the food. Thanks.
Amazing Sunday roast
Would highly recommend this pub for food or drink. Very relaxed atmosphere with great quality food at a decent price.
My first time there and found it very enjoyable and will definitely go back again.
This is my favourite place to go. The roasts are amazingly best I’ve ever had in a restaurant. Been for lunch and the chicken bacon and avocado salad is the best. I love the ambience and the decor is Lovely and quirky lots of personal touches. Jack and his team have worked so hard getting this pub right and I cannot fault it. They have an upstairs restaurant and bar and a private dining room too which is perfect for a special celebration. Please give it a try once lockdowns over these small businesses really need our support they have ploughed so much money into them to make them COVID friendly and they need our custom. Well done the Cock Inn I’ll be back.
Really great evening will defiantately return Terry
I love your restaurant , been a few times and will return. I wound like to see staff remind customers to wear masks when moving around as I didn’t see any customer put their mask on when going to the toilets or getting up to leave thank you Linda
Jackie our waitress was lovely
We felt a little bit squashed sat at our table. It felt like they maybe squeezed another table in , maybe not realising how restrictive it was when sat down. My fries didn’t come with my meal so I had to wait for 10 minutes for them. This is the second time in a row this has happened. Having said that, that wouldn’t stop us coming again. The food and atmosphere is amazing.
