About The Cat's Pyjamas - Eastgate
The best Indian street food this side of Delhi
Leeds based Scottish entrepreneur Alison White set up the second Cat's Pyjamas in Leeds. She worked closely with Alfred Prasad, the youngest Indian chef to ever receive a Michelin star, who crafted our menu with tantalising aromas and fragrant flavours to create food that will wake the taste buds. We celebrate Indian street food culture - the carts and street side vendors that dot the length and breadth of India’s regions, preserving age-old recipes whilst creating urban legends. Inspired by the hawker’s local dishes, Goa’s seafood shacks and the toddy shops of Kerala, every one of our dishes is infused with the passion of India’s cooks. We’re bringing the best Indian street food this side of Delhi to the heart of Headingley & Leeds.
Myself and five of my friends visited this restaurant yesterday evening for the first time. I was excited and had been looking forward to it as the menu seemed excellent on paper. The evening started off well, with us being sat promptly at our table and a waitress taking our initial order for some poppadoms with dips and drinks. It's worth noting at this point that there was only one small pickle tray for 6 of us, not enough - though the dips were tasty! We promptly polished off the pickle tray and poppadoms and ordered our main courses and sides all together. This is unfortunately where the evening took a bit of a nose dive, as there were several mistakes with what was brought out (several missing items and incorrect items) forcing me to have a word with the manager - as the waitress seemed to ignore our pleas to bring the correct food out. We did get the items that were incorrect for free, though it spoilt things somewhat, and lead us not to order any desserts as we felt that would just challenge them further. The food brought out was generally tasty, though myself and my wife thought the Tofu was awful it's no doubt down to preference. The curry we ordered and the sides were nice. We had issues again when we came to want to pay. We sat there for a good 20 minutes waiting for a waitress to come up and ask us if we were ready to pay, and since no one did we stopped a waitress and asked for the bill. Another 15 minutes or so went by with nothing, we noted she seemed to have forgotten all about it so we asked yet another waitress who brought the bill promptly after a couple of minutes. We noted the waitress who actually brought the bill in the end (and the same one who had gotten our order wrong) was quite rude and just dumped the tray on the table, thus removing the desire to tip her. We noted generally the staff seemed really disorganised - it was a Friday night but not THAT busy so I don't understand why. All in all, I would not go back. One last thing of note is 4 of us had a dodgy stomach the next day!
Just a few little touches could make this restaurant 5 out 5 for everything. Plates that were brought to us too early and were cold before our mains arrived, they were replaced immediately, one of the mains was piping hot and the other was just warm. Some staff seemed to do nothing where others were really busy. No children menus were offered even though we'd seen them on line.
Food was nice I found the choices on the menu limited as I only really eat chicken but enjoyed what we had..Service was very good and the staff all pleasant and welcoming. Would recommend it if you want something different to the usual Indian restaurants
Excellent food and great value
Amazing food. Sadly our starters and main came at the same time but that was the only fault
We visited as part of Leeds Restaurant Week and booked well in advance. Whilst we understand that it was a busy week, we felt the service was a little slow for our liking. Two diners chose the masala fries as our side. The order went through and after our starter had been and gone, we were informed that masala fries were no longer available, which was a real shame as we had ordered a while ago. The food was delicious and the place is lovely and I would definitely visit again, it was just a few minor details that affected our visit.
Great food, service could've been a tad better but understand the changes of people we had they did a great job.
Amazing food as always! Great deal through Eat Leeds but (understandably) slowed the service. Lovely friendly staff.
Great buzz to the place, funky decor, the food was completely lush! Everything we ordered was so tasty, will definitely be going again
Good service, nice environment, excellent food full of flavour and reasonably priced.
Incredible food! Such a great venue
This restaurant was recommended to me by a work colleague and it didn't disappoint, Adam our waiter good teach waiter's how it should be done. Having travelled to India a number of times the food was reminiscent of my travels and brought back many happy memories. Cat's Pyjamas is somewhere I will definitely recommend and visit again next time I am in Leeds. Great Fun, Great Food and Great Service what more can you say.
Superb! Thank you!
Absolutely epic as always! So thrilled you are opening in Harrogate!
First time at the Eastgate restaurant for us. Equally good as Headingley. Food fantastic. Service brilliant.
The food was incredible
First time visit- but definitely won’t be the last.
Excellent from arriving. Food lovely. Kebab, tandoori prawns and goan chicken. Will return
Both the lamb shank and fish curry were delious; thank you
First visit to Cat’s Pyjamas, but certainly won’t be our last! Delicious food and plenty of it! Buzzing, but relaxed atmosphere and great service from a happy team. Couldn’t fault it! Thank you!
Excellent food, great service and drinks. Bill was less than expected as well. Didn't try them myself but heard great things about Bhajis.
We were charged for a more expensive beer than we had ordered. This was rectified. We had to practically beg for the bill. Not enough fish on the menu. Dislike cutlery in bucket on table - unhygienic. Most dishes well over priced.
Had a great evening. Great Atmosphere and lovely food.. will be going back.
Fabulous service!! Lovely staff who were really friendly and attentive to our needs. It was a birthday and they brought the birthday cake out after our main meal without even been prompted and made the day really special. Only downside was I had a pram with a newborn in, no access to main restaurant had to carry the pushchair down and the changing facilities are upstairs. However would definitely visit again!
The best most authentic Indian food we have had since our honeymoon to Goa! The butter chicken was delicious and I never order it in the UK. I think two of us are enough food for 4 people!
