About The Castle Inn, Spofforth
The Castle Inn is a lovely pub restaurant that offers excellent food, a fine selection of drinks and a very warm welcome. You can enjoy meals in a relaxed bar, lovely dining room and covered courtyard.
Expect dishes influenced by the seasons, with high quality ingredients sourced from local suppliers. Our main menu is available from 12noon Monday to Saturday. Sunday is a delicious Roast day with additional fish, vegetarian and 'Special' dishes to choose from.
We are always delighted to hold our lunchtime meeting at the Castle. Welcome is always excellent and food plentiful and the Smarties with the coffee an added bonus!
I had Thai beef salad which was not as good as I have had previously
Thank you for accommodating all 8 of us at short notice for a superb Sunday lunch
Small but sweet room
My husband ordered a beef salad but it was covered in nuts which was not stipulated ion the menu, thankfully he isn’t allergic but just doesn’t like them and the meal was remade to order.
Wonderful evening with fine food and very helpful staff thoroughly enjoyed by all.
Food and service excellent.
I booked a table for 4. On arrival shown a huge table for 6-8 which had not been dressed and we were only 5 minutes early for pre-dinner drinks. Table so large that you sit too far away from friends (you did this twice before to us, so we know). Requested another table. Shown to a table for 2 made up to 4 places. Ridiculous. We finished our drinks and left. Your staff found it amusing! As said previously, this has happened on two occasions previously. Very disappointed. Drove back onto Wetherby and waited 20 minutes and ate at the Bengal restaurant. We were all pretty miffed again! Won't be dining with you again.
We had a superb family meal for 15 people. The food was superb and the service excellent. The were seated in the conservatory at the back of the restaurant which is light and spacious with a lovely atmosphere. The staff even coped effortlessly with a late increase in our numbers and a 2 day old baby coming along with her new parents. Excellent. Thank you!
We didn’t taste your food. We had left before it arrived. First impressions were the restaurant was quirky, a bit different. We soon realised it was actually just badly put together. The space lacked atmosphere and lacked any hint of style. The furniture was poor, our table nearly fell over several times with any kind of pressure. The rattan chairs were poor and uncomfortable. The space was dirty with used discarded napkins under our table and someone else’s chips on the floor. Cobwebs and dust abound. We didn’t risk the toilets, so can’t comment there - expectation would be grimy. It took a while to be offered a drink, no Southern Comfort available but everything else we wanted was provided - at this stage perhaps we thought Southern Comfort was an unusual choice in a pub so not surprising it was not available, maybe it was us? Next was the food order, Menus we’re stained and tatty. Choices were predictable and limited, seemed a bit pricy, but ok in general. Despite the staff having no insight into the food available, no advice or knowledge of what the dishes were, we ordered - ribs, and two salads. Some time later - we were told no ribs. Ok, prawns, Serrano Ham and melon, chicken burger instead? Some time later again - whilst we were told nothing to worry about as ham and melon was available, it would be ‘normal’ ham, not Serrano. No bread, no olives, nothing bought to our table. Glasses dry, no attempt to offer a refill. No food and much of what we chose not available. We booked on line, we were asked with our booking to mention anything in particular. We informed you it was our sons 9th birthday. We came to you because of an advertised family quiz - this did not seem to be happening. Nobody mentioned his birthday - not even a ‘you must be the birthday boy’ or ‘happy birthday!’ After an hour - with one drink, no food, a dirty table & restaurant and sitting in a space with zero atmosphere - we left. We offered to pay for our drinks, but were told they were on the house. We left and went somewhere else. We are lucky, we are able to eat out a lot. So despite it being our sons birthday the hopeless restaurant did not ruin our day, we just went somewhere better. But for many this would have been a disaster. Your restaurant needs cleaning. Your staff need training. Your chef needs sacking (any chef that is prepared to substitute Serrano Ham for ‘ham’ does not know food.) Your menu needs updating. If I knew Gordon Ramsey I would be phoning him to tell him of a great venue to film his next kitchen nightmares series. Will we come back - absolutely not, it was certainly the worst restaurant experience we have had this year. Has it potential to be good? Yes. But the effort and work needed will be enormous. If the reviews improve we will try again. But right now 0/10.
Dear Anna - Your feedback and comments are extremely worrying and I will pass them immediately to our senior management team so appropriate action can be taken. Thank you for your detailed feedback and I sincerely apologise for the fact that your visit was poor. This is highly unusual and I hope steps will be taken to make sure it is not repeated. Regards, Samantha Roffe, Owner, The Castle Inn.
Went to the Castle Inn to celebrate my 50th birthday with large group. Food excellent and I would definitely eat there again. Everyone very happy with their meals and the Inn provided a lovely atmosphere. We enjoyed sitting in the beer garden with the red kites flying over
Overall ok Service patchy - had to chase drinks both times 1) lost Chitty 2) changing barrel - happens but could have informed us 3) bill arrived without asking so felt hurried out at 10 pm Food was fine
Wonderful place. Stayed in “Leeds” which was a lovely room and ate in the restaurant. Evening meal was amazing. Breakfast was great. Excellent value for money!
I don’t normally write reviews, but myself & my wife had an absolutely fantastic time at The Castle Inn last night. There is a lovely atmosphere, the staff are really friendly & attentive and the food was absolutely delicious & cooked to perfection. I would have no hesitation in recommending The Castle Inn & will definitely be returning in the future. Thank you for such a lovely experience.
Dear Andy - Every review and comment is shared amongst our team - and they will all be thrilled to know how much you enjoyed your stay. We hope to see you and your wife again in the future. Best wishes from us all.
Really helpful staff. Gorgeous pub.
Whilst we enjoyed our stay in the pub the dining experience was a disaster. On the first evening of our stay we booked a table for 7.30pm and the restaurant was quite full. My first meal choice was unavailable....as was the second and third ! In the end I felt like saying 'well what do you have ?'. I settled on the lamb rump but asked for chunky fries instead of new potatoes. It arrived with sweet potato fries. By then I'd lost the will to live so didn't complain. My wife's experience was worse. She ordered a spinach and ricotto ravioli and, having started to eat it discovered it was a salmon ravioli. Good job she doesn't have a fish allergy. We queried this with the waitress and eventually the manager arrived to explain that there was a mix up in the kitchen and the chef had mistakenly served the wrong dish. We were offered free desserts in compensation but that wasn't really the issue. When are chefs going to learn that serving the wrong food can have serious implications when some folk have food allergies. Needless to say we didn't eat there on the second night of our stay. Overall not a good dining experience which was a shame because the staff and the overall ambiance were really nice.
Lovely food, great service
I’ve eaten here a few times for lunch and always enjoyed it so we thought we would give the evening menu a try. We ordered our drinks and the larger was warm, they replaced it but the larger was still on the warm side. We felt the menu was quite limited and also a few of the starter options (that we would have liked) were unavailable. However, the food we did order was nice and the portions were a generous size. The staff were friendly and attentive and did inform us that there was a bit of a wait on food due to a party in the bar area. The food was a little on the high side £7/8 a starter and £16/17 for a main. The eating area is quite large and even though it was a Saturday evening and there were a few tables in we felt it lacked a bit of atmosphere.
Fab!! Thank you. I know it was a busy few days surrounding the Great Yorkshire Show. But the service was amazing and the Fish & Chips were even more amazing!!
Many thanks for your feedback Ian. Best wishes from us all.
The staff all seemed a bit miserable. Could do with engaging with the guests a little more. Food was great.
There was a wedding party on.the evening in question. The music was loud in the bar area and caused some fittings to vibrate. I would suggest a door to segregate the bar area from the function room. Also some of the staff appeared a bit frazzled and in some cases a little rude.
Friendly, attentive staff with a genuine, warm welcome.
We chose the Castle Inn for a wake after a family funeral, although it was a sad occasion, the venue was perfect. We were in the conservatory, it was a hot day, but the windows were open and it felt very cool. There was wine waiting for our guests on arrival and the buffet food was amazing and beautifully presented. I would definitely recommend the Castle Inn to anyone for an event or just for a meal or drink.
Can’t fault the Castle Inn. Our room was luxurious If ever in the area again we will be calling in!
We have recently had our Wedding reception at The Castle Inn with 80 guests. We had a four course sit down meal which was amazing. Adam, Scarlett, Fran and Rhys and the rest of the team were superb and nothing was too much trouble. They made our day and we would recommend this venue very highly.
