About The Bull & Ram
Situated in a Grade 1 listed butcher's shop, the Bull & Ram serves the best in local award-winning produce. Lovingly restored back to it's former glory with the orginial tiles and awning, meat-hanging rail and herringbone oak ceiling, the restaurant offers a unique dining experience. The modern annex at the back of the kitchen boasts an open kitchen where diners can watch the chefs at work. The Bull & Ram's imaginative, modern yet informal menu celebrates the best of local produce, from 40-day Hannan's beef, dry-aged in a Himalayan salt chamber to fresh fish landed in Dumdrum, diners can enjoy the best that County Down has to offer. Signature dishes include bone marrow on toast, sugar-pit cured bacon chops and scallops "Rockefeller".
We were transferred to your resturant at University Street/Avenue. Lovely service and the fillet steak was absolutely first class. Highly recommend.
I loved the food as I had done on my one previous experience at The Bull and Ram back in July 2017 but it didn't have the wow factor that I experienced then. I thought menu was more limited than before, no lamb in a restaurant which has "Ram" in the name isn't right. Also sorry to see that the pork scratchings were not on the menu. The bottle of wine that I ordered was not available but was offered another which was not on the menu: is there a separate wine menu? The wine I got was very nice but would like to see all the correct available options on ordering. Also there was previously, a couple of local craft beer choices rather than Guinness options, I'd prefer to support the smaller operations. The service was pleasant but slow and a bit confused and again not as good as my visit in 2017. Overall, good but not great, which is how I categorised my previous experience.
Great food and excellent service. The mackerel starter was absolutely delicious, highly recommended, as was the pate starter. The burger was quality beef, so tasty. The battered cod was also great. The desserts were amazing! I’d highly recommend the apple and berry crumble. Others at the table loved the lemon posset and the lemon panna cotta. The staff were a real credit, friendly and very attentive. We will definitely be going back again soon. Thank you
Was really disappointed on this visit. Ordered the smoked haddock curry and there was salmon in it, when asked re this we were told it was an extra. Burger too well cooked ,ordered cheese board which we never received. Ordered a second Irish coffee but told we couldn’t have one as there was no cream. Not up to its usual good food and service very disappointed and thought the menu was limited.
Very good tasty food and friendly staff. Atmosphere was only lacking as it was lunch on a Friday so relatively quiet. Im sure its a different story in the evening.
Genuinely tasty food. Relaxing atmosphere with a real feel of local quality and great service.
Great meal, friendly service at just the right speed. Chowder was especially good!
An outstanding meal and service. Easily our best meal in Northern Ireland. Thanks to Kelan McMichael and his team; it was a delight to meet Chef Chris.
Superb service particularly from a lady with short hair and glasses. Worst I can say is we'd hate to sit at that table on a cold night, as the cold draught was bad enough every time the door opened. We'll definitely be back!
Service wasn't brilliant yesterday.
Absolutely first class food as always. Great service and attentive staff. Can’t fault it at all.
Steak as always was out of this world. The flavour was immense and always beautifully cooked. My wife had the carbonara which was wonderfully fresh and full of flavour. Chicken wings to start were seriously morish and I could’ve ate a bowl twice the size!
Lovely food. Great restaurant. Hope to be back very soon.
We had a lovely evening on Friday. The early sitting is perfect for families with children. The menu suits all ages and everyone was delighted with their meal.
We had a get together on Thursday night, food was fantastic & the service was just brilliant. We will do it again soon.
Great food and friendly service.
Good grub and very reasonably priced. Service excellent.
The front windows would benefit greatly from the addition of blinds; diners seated facing them have to contend with the reflection of the sun from brightly-painted buildings across the roundabout outside, which can detract from the positive aspects of the restaurant. Vertical blinds would also enhance the effect of the high ceiling.
Really enjoy our night at tha Bull and Ram. Thank you, staff and food lovely 😊
Excellent birthday meal and service. Very impressed. Burger was the best one I had ever had! Everyone cleared their plates and it was very, very good. It was £70 for 3 courses the three of us including 2 large glasses of wine - excellent value.
Altogether delicious meal and had a great night out.
Food, atmosphere and service excellent. A very enjoyable night out. Fast becoming my favourite restaurant.
Main course came over an hour after we had finished starters. Staff very unattentive to empty glasses no table and never asked if we'd like more drinks.
We booked a table for Mother's Day lunch to treat our mum, though unfortunately it was a bit of a disaster from start to finish. When we arrived our table wasnt ready so we were told to just stand by bar which was a bit awkward as we were in the middle of sll other diners and were getting in the way of staff. We waited more than half an hour for our order to be taken (this was more than likely due to an incident beyond staffs control - see below - so this was very understandable why this happened). It was over an hour before our starters arrived. One of which was burnt. Our main courses were even worse unfortunately. Two of us ordered beef which we were told was served medium. It arrived cold and really tough. The lamb dish was much the same. When we pointed out the cold food, we were asked did we just want it 'reheated' instead of replacing these. The replacements were warmer but the meat still very tough and much of it was left on the plates. We witnessed a number of other tables returning food to the kitchen. We were later asked if we wanted dessert and at this stage after more than two hours into our visit we asked if there was a long wait time on desserts (we had been watching a few other tables around us who had been waiting really long times on food to arrive). The answer was "Yeh probably but ill check." When the waitress came back and handed us menus, we asked if she had managed to check on the likely wait time. She said she had checked with her manager and if we got our orders in straight away they would 'make sure they were put on.' We attempted to order dessert but were told they didnt have any of our chosen dessert left. In the end we gave up and just asked for the bill. The manager brought us our bill and said he had taken off our starters due to all the issues. Instead though the bill contained a number of drinks which we didnt even order. We travelled 50 minutes for our Mothers Day celebration in the Bull and Ram but unfortunately will not be back and will not be recommending this restaurant to others. While I cannot (and am not) guaranteeing the link between our meal at the Bull and Ram - we are all also feeling unwell today. We had nothing else to eat the rest of the day so find it hard to explain that there could be any other reason for this. Finally, on a point of health and safety, an elderly lady collapsed during our visit to the restaurant and an ambulance had to be called. (This was also likely the reason for the delay in getting our order taken at the start - which is totally understandable while staff tried to attend to the lady - we were very happy to wait and the ladies safety and well-being was of course far more important than any of us being served) but my point is that the layout of the restaurant made it difficult for the ambulance to enter and exit the restaurant. We moved a few tables around to accommodate the paramedics but it may be just something to consider - accessibility incase of emergencies and also for wheelchair users. Staff also seemed panicked and confused at times, so perhaps some training for the manager and some team members may help with managing any future emergencies or incidents (hopefully they never happen). This feedback is in no way meant to cause offence but instead I hope it will be used constructively to rectify issues with food and service as I would hate for anyone else to experience the quality of food and standards of service which we did.
As good as perfect. 👌
