About The Blue River Cafe
The Blue River Café is situated on the banks of the river Thames and is the ideal place for customers to enjoy a long leisurely lunch or dinner looking out at the activity along the river.
We offer a warm welcome and great service along with excellent food at a reasonable price. We welcome families and our Sunday Carvery is a firm favourite with our regular guests.
Had prawn in batter for starters.Last time I was here they were twice the size- very tasty but would like more! Sunday roast was very good value and we will return again & again.
We left as soon as we walked through the door. While this has once been a lovely place with a lovely atmosphere, the recent changes to the decor and set-up have turned the place into a lacklustre, unwelcoming, sad place. We had to go to Boulters Lock instead. Such a shame about the view, lovely building and amazing atmosphere and food you once had. We were really sadden to see the state of this once, lovely place which used to buzz with life and good atmosphere.
Absolutely Fabulous food and great fast service. With a great view over the beautiful river Thames.
Great place, very friendly staff, great food, Room was lovely, Hotel could do with a lick of paint in places, looks like it's a work in progress but overall great place to stay
Had a lovely lunch there this week. The food was delicious, especially the creamy mash!!!
Unfortunately our experience at The Blue River Cafe was not great at all. We ended up sitting inside, the only people sitting in side, as outside was far too hot. The atmosphere was very depressing inside, the interior was not well looked after at all. We ordered our food and it felt like it was the waiters first day. He had no idea what was on the menu and got confused very quickly. One of us order a salad with goats cheese, and he came back out to check if it was with chicken or fish. The food itself wasn't the best quality. My main course I felt I could get better quality food as a microwave meal from Tesco's. However others at our table did enjoy their food. Perhaps my choice wasn't the best. Then we ordered desserts, 3 of us ordered ice creams, 1 sorbet and 1 a brownie. The three of us that ordered the ice creams, one of our choices they didn't have so we asked for a different flavour. One ice cream turned up correct, two of them did not. The sorbet didn't turn up at all and we had to go a prompt the staff for this. When it turned up 1 scoop was sorbet, 1 was ice cream. Not what was ordered. We then went to pay and got charged for an additional ice cream! Over all, not the best experience at all. We didn't feel the restaurant was busy enough for the staff to make these sort of errors. Not a place we will be returning to unless it is completely renovated inside with brand new staff.
Nachos were supposed to have cheese and jalepenos but didn’t! The service was slow and slack. Cleanliness was awful!! The live music took over and was far to loud that you couldn’t hear yourself think-let alone have a conversation across the table. The smell of damp toilets as you enter the building was majorly off putting!! Sorry-we won’t be back.
Upon arrival, there was no-one to greet us or speak to regarding our booking. It took 5 minutes before someone came...no-one at the bar made an attempt to help either. Finally, we were shown to our table, the dining area looked very empty and the environment needed some tlc. The service was very slow, drinks, food and dessert ordering seemed to take forever and we couldn’t understand as we were one of 4 tables occupied in the restaurant ☹️ The one saving grace was that the food was pretty good and loved the Sunday roast, however the coffees arrived cold and my cappuccino was a filtered white coffee with chocolate sprinkles...very disappointing. Not sure we’ll be coming back.
The worst experience, the food was below average very sandy sald leaves please at least wash those leaves, fish was very smelly and not fresh, I was surprised how its allowed to serve such a low standard food to customers. Very disappointed please please please don't visit this place
Food was ok apart from a very fatty chop that spoilt my wifes meal, and the kids fahijas were so spicy...bill took a while to come but the duty manager apoligised for the poor food and reduced the bill accordinly which was fair enough..ideal location but needs more attention to detail..
Very poor, no service at all! Ended up leaving after waiting 20mins for someone to come over and ask for drinks! Very embarrassed in front of own clients.
The food was ok - the service was appalling- please give your staff training - we waited so long for a drink food etc and you were not busy/ hate to think what you were like if you were. On that basis thought that you were well over priced - visit July 2019
I came with my husband the first Sunday in June then brought my daughter and son in law this Sunday. The food and service was far better on our second visit. The beef was so much more tender and tastier. The staff seemed happier, friendlier and more experienced. Wiill definately come again
Drinks and food were a long time coming even though the restaurant wasn’t busy. Also had to ask 3 times for toddlers desserts to arrive. On the positive side the food was reasonably priced for what we had.
Have been to the restaurant twice for Sunday lunch, the food was excellent.
Sorry to give a poor review. On the positive side waiting and bar staff were friendly. What an amazing location. Order at the bar was taken incorrectly which meant we were missing two main meals. We were told that we should expect to wait 35 - 45 mins for food but food turned up after 15 mins later. Realised eventually that the other mains weren't arriving and went to talk to manager who prompt sorted replacement free of charge. Thank you for this. Kids had finished at this point and non of the puddings had arrived, for a considerable amount of time. Girl serving was stood by door to kitchen watching us eat. Didn't remove finished plates when ready and we had to ask for puddings. Puddings eventually delivered with no spoons. Asked for spoons at the bar they didn't arrive. Approached girl waitress she ran off before we could get to her. Eventually my husband went to look and found spoons by the entrance to the kitchen probably around 15mins after it had been served. Then had to ask for one adults pudding to be delivered to the table as this also hadn't arrived. Service was very poor and it wasn't like the waitress was busy. Kids eventually had their puddings by around 10pm and were too tired to eat them. Food in general was really good. Deep fried food was over done though with most of the meals.
We have been about six times and unfortunately the service doesn’t improve at all. Last night was very disappointing ,witch is a shame as the food is very good .
Extremely chaotic on Sunday lunchtime. Only one till in use at the bar so very long queues for orders to be taken. One of the lunches was missed from our order altogether so the remaining party had finished before it arrived. No parsnips on the plate and no explanation at all. Food was adequate but clearly needs to be an overhaul of staffing levels and method of taking orders at the bar. Drinks very expensive especially for soft drinks.
Excellent all round
Lovely food in a lovely setting.
Friday 21 June at 8 - restaurant was understaffed but they did what they could. The drinks were fine but the food was poor. Had it not been a birthday celebration I would have complained there and then but it wasn’t appropriate as it would have put even more of a dampener on the evening. Such a lovely location but the food was dreadful - could not recommend in any way
Meal service perfect best Sunday lunch
Very nice food and service
Booked for party of 9 for tribute evening. One starter arrived and then 15 minutes later the others arrived. 2 main courses weren't served until everyone else had finished (after many requests to the waitresses who were very apologetic). Four guests had chilli con carne which was too hot to eat. The manager was told about this his comment was 'it wasn't hot enough for him'! He did takes 2 of the meals off the bill. Everyone was rushing about there didn't appear to be any organisation. The entertainment was very good, without him the evening could has been a disaster.
Great atmosphere but singer was late and didn’t seem to play for that long but thoroughly enjoyed the evening
