About The Blazing Donkey
Quite simply creating a place where you come and enjoy great food and drink in relaxing and comfortable surroundings is and always has been our aim. Scrub-top tables, flagstone and wooden floors provide a relaxed and convivial environment for dining in the casual bar and barn dining room areas while our gardens and terrace are perfect Summer alfresco dining.
We don’t count how many calories are in a dish but we will spend a lot of time trying to get the best out of the ingredients. For head chef and Maitre ‘d (both are local lads), it’s all about creating dishes that put a smile on your face served by a team with a smile on theirs!
Unfussy, clean & simple dishes all prepared entirely from fresh local produce is what you may expect. Indeed, our restaurant provides truly fantastic food, cooked exceptionally well and priced affordably to ensure everyone can enjoy delicious dishes cooked with enthusiasm. In addition to baking all our own breads, making our own marmalades and jams and ice creams, our kitchen’s ingredients our kitchen team source virtually all their ingredients locally.
Whether you’re joining us for breakfast, a coffee and slice of cake in the morning, or it’s lunch or dinner from our main menu, you can be sure to be served the freshest of food, in a very relaxed and comfortable environment . The little ones will love it too as head chef will look after them with his junior menu.
Super meal in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Their artisan cheese selection was very impressive. Staff were charming and service fantastic.
This was a meal for our 10th wedding anniversary - we got married at The Blazing Donkey on 27th July 2009, Hence why I booked the meal. I did put in the online booking that it was our anniversary. Our table booked for 6pm but when we were sat down at 6:15pm we were advised that ‘due to the kitchen being busy for the wedding party’ we would have to wait until about 7pm for food. I made a booking online AND phoned up confirm booking was ok so why should a wedding affect my meal in the restaurant? It made me feel like we were in the way. If you have a wedding on, don’t take restaurant bookings. Every other person that came in to the restaurant after us were given the same message about the wait for food. I spent around £140 last night on food and drinks and felt like I was in the way. It really was very uncomfortable. There was a long wait between courses and to have our plates cleared after each course. Also, there was no music being played in the restaurant, just BBC Radio 2 - which is not really appropriate for a Saturday night meal at such a nice restaurant. There was an £8.00 service charge added to my bill - I don’t think this should be taken as a matter of course, I am paying for the service in my bill price. If I have received good service and food THEN I would leave a tip for the staff. The menu was very limited and little choice for children.
We went back to the Blazing Donkey for dinner following our wedding there in February 19 and again it didn’t disappoint. The setting, food, drink and staff was outstanding as usual and we are looking forward to going back soon.
Lovely food, very nice. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. Very quiet on a Tues evening. Menu a little bit pricey.
Service was off to a rock start due to a large family group decamping from the hotel as we arrived for our Mothers Day lunch. Once the numerous lovely people , their cakes and kiddies departed we were sat down by the window. The menu was small and varied but we only had eyes for the roast beef. The food was delicious and cooked to perfection for us. We were joined by my brother who arrived late so ordered the tomato soup starter which looked lovely and tasty with a chunk of toasted bread. The desserts were strummy, brother and i had the vanilla cheesecake with toffee sauce whilst mum's cheese board with 4/5 different cheeses, assorted crackers, butter, grapes, celery and pot of what looked like cranberry jam. Mum had loved the roast but said the cheese needed to be out of the fridge for longer than it was. As it was Mother's Day i refrained from suggesting she left it a while to get to room temperature! However, i too would have been tempted to get started as it looked a picture. There was an open fire going in the bar waiting area which looked so pretty and cosy. A constant stream of people arrived throughout the time we ate. We were delighted to have found a really decent Sunday Roast, as we'd nearly given up hope of finding one! Would highly recommend the food, location and attentive staff. Thank you!
Exceeded our expectations-will be back
Lovely restaurant surroundings and settings, was there for a first date, nice and quite midweek, nice open log fire, helpful staff and accommodated our dietary needs, Vegan and low fat catered for.
The food was amazing and staff are very friendly. Also nothing better than sitting in front of the open fire with a nice drink.
