About The Begging Bowl
The Begging Bowl opened its doors in 2012, offering heady, authentic Thai flavours sourced directly from grocers in Bangkok coupled with fresh fish and meat from local suppliers. Sitting on a prime corner plot with a beautiful open terrace, The Begging Bowl has become part of the community in Peckham and we’re proud to have created a friendly, vibrant space where locals come regularly to enjoy great food and homely service.
The inspiration for our food comes from every province of Thailand. We explore all the wonderful regionality of Thai food, from the creamy curries of the Muslim south to the fiery grilled meats from Issan in the North East.
We use specialist ingredients such as hog plum, rambutan, rose apple, banana blossoms and apple aubergines and source them fresh to retain their flavor, rather than waiting for them to go into storage like many ingredients imported from Asia.
We’re extremely happy to source many of our Thai ingredients from fellow Nahm graduates, Bo.lan in Bangkok who are dedicated to finding the best produce in Thailand.
When you come to the restaurant you’ll experience the vibrant and complex tastes that balance the classic Thai flavour palate of hot, sour, sweet and salty. Every detail is thought of and every component is made from scratch in our kitchens. (The Begging Bowl inherited from Nahm what we think is still the only coconut press in the UK – we call it “Kuno” – and we use it to press all our fresh coconut cream.)
All our dishes come as small sharing plates, with unlimited glutinous and jasmine rice, so people can enjoy their food together just as friends and family do all over Thailand.
Our drinks also reflect our passion for combining the East and West. Head bartender, Michele Di Firmo and our small team of talented bar team painstakingly create each of our cocktails from homemade ingredients such as lemongrass infused whisky, Thai basil bitters and barrel aged negroni – which can take up three months to produce.
Excellent all round. Delicious authentic Thai cuisine
We really enjoyed our evening at Begging Bowl. We felt safe and looked after throughout the evening. The tables were well spaced and all staff wearing lovely face masks was greatly appreciated. The food as always was delicious and it was great to see some new additions to the menu. We will book again very soon and have already recommended to friends who have been nervous about starting to eat out in restaurants. xxx
The food, service and ambience were all great!
Amazing food, especially the celeriac curry. V friendly and attentive staff!
Easy to book a table online. Friendly staff with great, fast service. Food was wonderful, would definitely return and recommend to othery
Really lovely food as always and staff are very attentive! Good measures in place for Covid social distancing too for anyone concerned!
It was great to be able to taste your food again after all this time. Have to say that the separation between the tables made for an even more plesant lunch experience than before. Only thing that left me a bit sad was seeing you had removed the Verminetino from your white wine list selection. We will definitely go back!
A simply wonderful dinner, as always!
With the current situation, they were well prepared with making not only the customer's feel safe but also ensuring their staff are protected (checking temperatures at the door, wearing masks, hand sanitisers readily avaliable, 1-2 meter distance between tables). The food was amazing and well presented. The staff were welcoming, giving their recommendations and suggestions for those who are not sure what they want. I would definitely recommend this place to my friends and family.
Bit of a mixed review here - some positives but a couple of things to improve on. We came for dinner in March 2020. 1) Our cocktails were creative and delicious. 2) Our food, especially and unusually, the veggie options, (broccoli and artichokes) were fabulous. Sadly, the tamarind fish curry was too salty, almost as though it had been salted twice. The dessert was innovative and pretty yummy too. 3) The service was the main issue. We had not one, but four of the wait staff "reminding" us every 20 mins that we had to give up our table at 9pm. This meant our conversations (with friends we were seeing after several months) kept being interrupted. We understand there are two sittings but this was essentially overkill and marred an otherwise lovely evening. I'd add a star to my review if this issue was fixed.
Wonderful. My current favourite restaurant. Sorry one of our group was rude. Impressed by how well staff managed it.
Very good but quite pricey.
Amazing food and impeccable service. Probably our favourite resturant!
Food was very nice!! Loved the sharing culture in there. The whole restaurant has a very friendly feel with service to match. Will 100% be revisiting.
Excellent as always. However, on this occasion we did have to cancel one dish as we had finished everything else and it had not yet been prepared.
Awesome from start to finish, had an amazing night, the food was delicious, the staff we very friendly. Will be booking again soon
Excellent in every way
As always the meal was incredible. Will be back soon
As usual, fantastic food and drinks served by lovely staff. Interesting flavours and a high quality variety of food. I am not usually a cocktail drinker and loved the Exploding Case of Mangoes to start the meal, and the desert wine was a lovely way to finish the meal.
Excellent service. Very friendly and attentive staff. The food was tasty though I wasn’t completely blown away. The portions were very small for the price/location of the restaurant. Overall 7/10. Almost but not quite up there with the best Thai restaurants in London.
Pretty good. Great lunch menu - very authentic with not a green curry in sight. Execution was a bit more varied - papaya fritters and the chicken soup where stand out; other things felt a bit rushed out of the kitchen. Worthy of a trip to Peckham!
Was a absolutely fantastic meal
Good food, dishes interestingly presented and really lovely loos!
Delicious food, friendly service. Thank you!
