Thomas Street pub has new owners, a new menu and a new look
19/20
AS the slew of new bars, restaurants, coffee shops and diners continues to pull the focus of Northern Quarter east towards Piccadilly, away from the old High Street and the braying Printworks weekend overspill, two historic institutions have re-emerged in the west, revamped and rebooted. The team behind the Mackie Mayor have turned the area’s old meat market into Manchester’s most Instagrammable foodie haven, while tired Thomas Street boozer The Bay Horse has changed hands, been resaddled and is ready to ride again. The pub’s new jockeys are Ross Mackenzie, Jobe Ferguson and Lyndon Higginson – the trio behind multiple Manchester venues including Crazy Pedro’s, Cane & Grain and Black Dog Ballroom. Having opened The Northern Quarter restaurant (TNQ) around the corner some thirteen years ago, Ferguson has been a long-time and loyal Horse patron, as has Mackenzie, who has lived and worked in the area for a quarter of a century. So when they got wind that the landlords were ready to offload the old Georgian boozer, they were on it faster than Frankel. “We’ve always wanted a pub,” Mackenzie tells us over very fine plates of rotisserie suckling pig, duck hearts and ox cheek (£5-£12). “Our friends here had lost the love for it so we thought why not – what a great opportunity to bring a proper food-focused pub back to Manchester city centre.” “We’re going for the Rovers Return meets Soho House,” says Higginson, who took lead on design. “It was all pretty grim, very few redeeming features, so we ripped it apart and started from the ground up. It’s our modern take on the local.” You can see what he’s getting at, with traditional pub traits like the darts board, wood panelling and Toby jugs a nod to pubs of yore. But where would a new NQ opening be without it’s craft beer chalk board, small plates menu and…. is that a chef’s table? “Yes, yes it is,” whispers Ferguson, “but don’t tell the chefs that – I don’t think they’ve cottoned on yet.” Ferguson is the group’s ‘food guy’, and in between jollies with his Michelin star-collecting dining posse, has had the lousy job of eating his way through some of the world’s best pub grub. “I’ve been all over researching this place” he says, clutching a spiced faggot, “from The Spotted Pig in New York to the Pig & Whistle in Beverley.” Here’s a man that clearly knows his pork. The Bay Horse Tavern, 35-37 Thomas Street, opens daily from 11am to 1am Sunday to Wednesday and 2am Thursday to Saturday. Small plates £3-£6, sandwiches and salads £6-£10, pies £9 and rotisserie £10-£12.

It was a little noisy as we were seated on the ground floor near the bar. The waiter was really good and the food was definitely above average. It was a Monday so we got 50% off food and we also had a deal on the wine so it was excellent value for money.

We’ve been going here every week for almost two years and have always rated the place highly in relation all aspects of the experience. However, on this occasion, the service just wasn’t up to the usual standard. For example, the barman was more interested in juggling than serving us.

Absolutely fabulous food - unpretentious but original menu especially the starters. Food is packed full of flavour and fine ingredients. Really good service by everyone and really reasonable prices. Great choice of beer, wine etc - we do and will return and we would recommend.

We had a great time. We stayed longer because we could bring the dogs which meant we weren’t worried about getting home

Friendly welcoming staff. Beer (Brightside) on good form. Slight issue with the fish, but this was replaced without any hesitation and further checks that everything was OK - which it was. Pleasant atmosphere - will return!

Excellent pub - eaten here before and always a great atmosphere, very good pub grub and not too expensive. Lovely reasonably priced bottle of Malbec to go with the meal. Great re-union with some old pals - we'll be back!! Tony

We came for the pub quiz - we enjoyed ourselves due to our company and the pub itself seemed nice, friendly staff. The quiz however, was pretty boring and too serious. There needed to be a better mix of questions, but the host took such a long break between every question and didn't really give it much personality. If you want a fun quiz that doesn't take 2-3 hours for four rounds (plus picture round) - it's not the place for you! It was too slow and unnecessarily dragged out.

Although we could not fault the actual service (our waiter was fantastic), they had no record of our reservation the we arrived and we were put in the noisiest part of the pub (even though we were eating) Then we asked to be moved and were moved upstairs which was much better. The food was lovely and the staff were very attentive.

We reserved a table online but on arrival there was no table reserved for us. One was found, we only had a short wait. The waitresses were lovely. The roast potatoes were hard and tasted more like boiled potatoes than roasties, which was disappointing.

Service was ok, a lot of big bookings at the same time so service was slow. Was told if we had to wait for a drink our time would be extended but it wasnt.
